Another day of slow but steady progress. The battle of Manilla is not over, in fact, I took a beating today thanks to the weather. Bad weather over Vigan grounded my fighters, but my bombers from French Indochine launched their attack anyway, and met a handful of the remaining USAAF fighters over Manilla...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 17, 41
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 43 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44 Tojo x 9

Allied aircraft
P-26A x 2
P-35A x 1
P-40E Warhawk x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44 Tojo: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-26A: 1 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Ki-44 Tojo sweeping at 15000 feet

Today we lost the first Tojo. In the combat replay, we shot down 3-4 fighters, but in the combat report we only got two...thats odd. Anyway, the Tojo is proving its worth in the Manilla skies, they are much more efficient than my Zeros.
I will change my production later to add more research to get the Tojos in production as soon as possible.

Overall, I am lacking aircraft for my army fighter units. I have several hundred fighters not doing anything due to the fact that they can only use the old Nates. I will not risk my pilots flying in old and outdated planes. But that means Im only using 1/3 of my fighters at the moment. I will take a closer look at the Japanese industry tomorrow and see if I can make some changes to our fighter production.

Japanese aircraft

As you can see, the USAAF was effectively grounded by the Tojo sweep. Due to very bad weather over the target, our bombers fail to make any significant damage to the airfield.

Morning Air attack on Tarakan Coastal Gun Battalion, at 67,91 (Tarakan)

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid spotted at 48 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.

KB strikes Tarakan to soften up the defenders before the invasion. Lots of Vals damaged, not nearly enough damage caused to justify such losses. Those two guns destroyed might have saved some lives though.

Port Attack: 4 x 100 kg GP Bomb
16 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 6000 feet
Port Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb

Yesterday I noticed that there were ships still in Manilla harbor. The Sallys and Lilys are based at Vigan and instead of another airfield attack I decided to put them on port attack to see if I could catch some allied ships. I was very surprised at the results. 2 AS, 1 AO, a large xAP....Not to mention 4 subs... A very careless move by the allies proved to cost them dearly. I especially like the fact that I managed to catch another 4 subs...every sub sunk is a major victory for my cargo ships.

I will have to rotate these Oscars out of the front line for a while. They have too low morale and too high fatigue to be effective. They have been operating out of Singora since the first day of the war, providing aircover for my landings at Kota Bharu and the cargo ships unloading at Singora.

This is what happens when the fighters refuse to take off, while the bombers do. 9 bombers lost for no apparent gain. I can ill afford losses like these, and now two more bomber wings must be grounded, filled with replacements, and carefully nurtured back into operational condition again. It could have been much worse though, afterall, over 100 bombers went in unescorted against the USAAF CAP today.

Operation Spring Rain

To commence on January 20th 1942.

Main landing at Semarang. Initial wave will consist of a division with support units. Diversionary landings will take place near Soerebaja and Batavia. Partly to confuse the enemy, partly to tie down enemy land units and secure airstrips on Java. Landings will also take place at Oosthaven and Balikpapan, but these landings will be more of a mopping-up-character.

The entire KB will provide aircover to the Semarang landing with 4 CVs taking up position just offshore and 2 CVs escorting the transport ships. 4-6 BBs will provide surface cover in separate surface combat TFs, while the transports themselves will be escorted by CAs. This is the operation that will decide the fate of India. If all goes well here and our losses are light, we can start planning for the Indian Ocean. If we get bogged down here, there is no telling where our offensive will end.

I figure that if I can clear Java by late January/early February, I can land at Ceylon in early March. I will need the amphib bonus to try the Indian gamble, and that only last for three months.

First order of business: Get recon reports from the intended landing sites. I have filled Kuching and Singkawang with recon aircraft and will start flying recon missions tomorrow. Also, all CVs must return to Cam Rahn Bay to replenish their airwings and refuel. As soon as Tarakan falls I will move the KB north. Akagi and Kaga will depart immideately. There will be a noticable dip in Japanese activity in the NEI soon...the calm before the storm.

Today 10 xAKs came back from the shipyards after being converted to troop carriers.
These xAK-t's will meet up with a dozen xAPs at Hong Kong and pick up the 38th Division and some supporting units. The convoy will sail to Kuching to meet up with the rest of the invasion force, and from there proceed to commence Operation Spring Rain.

The CVs of the KB are forming up with the BBs of the surface combat fleet at Cam Rahn Bay to refuel and replenish ammo and aircraft. Tomorrow they will be ready for combat again.

I believe hard to hit being small and fast. Sound good.

About your production, do you have changed something?

Yeah, nothing too dramatic though. I figure I have a couple of months to learn the Jap production since the home islands have enough resources for at least a couple of months at the start of the war.

Basically what I have done is to
- expand Oscar Ic and Zero production
- shut down irrelevant research and change it to something interesting. I have decided to focus research on N1K1 George, the Jap Me 262, Tojos and a couple of other fighters and bombers.
- expand engine production for Oscars/Zeros and switch over from pointless engines.

Japanese losses so far:

In my opinion, we have been successful in the attempts to minimize losses to shipping. Just 5 xAK and 3 xAKL together with an Escort and a Patrol Boat.

We will undoubtedly suffer more losses during Operation Spring Rain that is about to commence, but still I believe we have achieved very good results for very few losses.

The losses to the army and navy airforces are somewhat more serious though. Of the Betty losses, the vast majority comes from three raids that went in unescorted against heavy CAP. Aside from that, the ops losses to my Zeros have been too high. They are a consequence of the long-range sweeps that had to take place in the early stages of the invasion of the Phillipines.

Well, since you need more than 100 rd-factories to have the chance to have the model arrive a month earlier. Since I will not be able to build a rd-factory up to 100 for several months yet, there is no point in researching models that will arrive in mid-late 42. And whats the real use of having a 43-model arrive one month earlier? I figured it would be better to focus on some really good late-war fighters, and perhaps have them arrive 5-6 months earlier.

Makes sense, another newbie queston: is the chance to see an aircraft one month earlier depend on the availability date?
I mean, researching a 43/10 model has the chance raised whereas researching a 45/5 model has the chance lowered, or is it non influential?

I think the chance is the same regardless of arrival date.

Do you mean three months is the max that you can anticipate or is worth to try to get a model earlier just three months before the availability date?

IIRC from WITP, you were not able to advance more than 3 months any R&D planes.
And also:
- a R&D factory begins to produce when all repairs are over
- The repairs are not made 1 point/ turn but are checked randomly instead (it functions like that I guess in AE as some of my R&D factories are not repaired at all since the beginning).

--> It has no sense to expand a R&D factory to 100 in the beginning since you will have to wait until the last 100th point to be repaired before any production can occur (and it could be loooooong).

This was made to prevent to invest in 45 R&D planes in 41, being able to actually have it before 43 models.

Unless you want to research late models, turnoff the production and wait the last mounths.

most of the time especially early in the war subs travel around on the surface, torpedoing them is jsut the same as torpedoing any other ship if their caught unawares .. teh cahllenging part is they have a very shallow draft and if torpedoes have impact detonators it would be very challenging to hit one.. however if your torpedoes have magnetic detonators just set torp depth about 2 meters under the subs keel and should be an easy shot as long as they hadn't spotted you first and you were a little ahead f thier path to give you a lead in the engagement... i guess this is a good question what type of detonators did jap torps have? magnetic or impact?

I think it was possible to change running depth for torpedoes, and therefore it should not be a problem to hit a submarine with impact detonators despite shallow draft. I know there are several examples of submarines hitting other submarines with torpedoes. One example would be the USS Corvina that was sunk by torpedoes from I-176 off Truk in 1943

of course you can change the depth on the torpedoes.. its very important.. you need to have shipping charts to show you the depths of the kels of ships you attack ... the problem with submarines it the 'sweet spot' to hit is only about 2 meters wide  very difficult to get the depth right.. to high will not work you cant run torpedoes on the surface they have to have some depth.. to shallow and if they hit the subs hull at a 30-45 degree angle or greater there is achance the impact detonators wont work and the torps will just glance off the keel.. the only relianble shot with a impact detonator is under 30 degre angle which is very hard to achieve under normal circumstances.. it becasomes much harder with subs

The unfortunate Dutch sub should sink after taking a single torpedo hit. I-158 launched all her 8 torpedoes to take out the short-range submarine. Which is all and well, since we have made the war against allied submarines one of our top priorities.

Today we suffered our first major setbacks. I ventured with my CVE-taskforce too close to the Lae-invasion site and we paid a heavy price for that. Then, the invasion of Java went off to a disasterous start when one invasion TF went in too soon, for some reason, 8 TFs had their orders cancelled, and a single TF went on as planned. As a result, several cargo ships went in completely unescorted and without aircover.

Losses were disasterous this turn. Very very annoying since one TF was lost due to carelessness and one because of an order-screwup.

I thought the Claudes would be enough to cover the Lae landings. Unfortunately this proved to be completely wrong. Instead of finding ourselves attacked by Hudsons, we were hit hard by A-24s from Port Moresby. To make things even worse, our CAP only manages to put a single fighter into the air. The CAP is completely ineffective, and all the dive bombers make it through. Taiyo is hit hard. And sinks later in the afternoon.

Poor AKs... this proves to be a very costly misstake. After the turn I looked at what had happened. All my escort TFs were ordered to follow the main invasion TF, TF92. Unfortunately TF92 were still in port trying to load more supplies (I had forgotten to click the "load troops only" button). Since the base did not have enough supplies to load the ships, they remained in port. This TF was heading to another invasion site, and went ahead alone and without the cover of Akagis and Kagas Zeros who were tasked to provide aircover.

I believe this is the last we will see of this A-24 unit in a while. 10 A-24s are shot down during these two days. Several more must be damaged and the morale of the pilots are in shambles. They did manage to sink a CVE and a CS though, and that is a very heavy price to pay for us. It annoys me alot to lose the ships to a stupid rookie misstake like that. Although I find some comfort in the fact that the CVE and the CS are not exactly vital to the Japanese defence in 43-44.
