Hi Chris, I still look in at the AAR now and again. Sorry to see that the game seems to be coming to a tedious conclusion.

I think bigbaba has several other games of WITP and AE on the go and he sees this one as a time filler after he has done his other turns.....dont know why he bothered taking it over if he was not going to give it 100%.

Its looking like AE will be playable after the first patch comes out, perhaps its time to start in pastures new - not against me though, one ass whipping is enough!

Hi Paul

bigbaba is still constantly sending me turns, if Iīm available usually more than just a couple a day. The turn frequency isnīt a problem, what seems to be a problem is the fact that neither his strategy nor his tactics seem to be what I would call "advanced". There have been so many things that were just plain wrong that it really seems like if I would play the AI. I donīt want to offense my opponent and I donīt want to be misunderstood, but what has happened after he took over again is just a mistery to me.

Perhaps Iīm the one that is wrong and he will crush me in the next 6 months, but as it stands now, Iīm sure that we will either see no action or something crazy. Crazy would mean IMO that I will be able to either stop it cold or in the best case turn it into another Allied disaster. The highlight in Allied insufficiency seems to me the ongoing evacuation of Port Moresby. I donīt know if I should laugh or cry...

Iīm not happy about AE at the moment and I surely wonīt start a PBEM until some more patches have been released. Did the same thing with WITP and waited until 1.5 IIRC to start a PBEM. Didnīt regret it.

The good news of the day is the fact that R&D of the Frank was succesful already and the arrival date moved one month, now being at 7/44. Iīm sure we will get it at 6/42 at the latest, if we would be really lucky, we could see the first fighters coming out of the factories in 5/44 already. Upgrading my IJAAF fighters Franks will be a big leap.

as you can see, Port Moresby has been nearly completely evacuated... can you imagine that? This is absolutely off IMO. But perhaps Iīm the one that is wrong. We dropped a para unit (without itīs 47mm AT guns and without most of itīs support) and the 40 combat squads have not been able to achieve anything (well, we dropped a fort level) against the defender with an unadjusted av of 0 (Z E R O). Oh well, I can send in more troops and weīll take the base back...

Itīs mid February 44...

sub is confirmed sunk of course... whenever more than one or two Allied DDs end up in the same hex as an IJN sub you have a fair chance the sub gets sunk immedietely... this is West of Ceylon, bigbaba seems to be completely evacuating Ceylon... another mistake...

ordered a sweep from Lae while Iīve kept the fighter sentais on 50% Cap. The result is that nearly 40% of my fighters are damaged now. Aviation support there is above the required level. This is once more an example of what is going on in this campaign. While there werenīt any problems with damaged fighters/bombers/recons from flying Cap/nav search/asw, all my daitais have huge problems now to keep their aircraft operational. If I want to keep my fighter sentais undamaged I canīt afford more than 20% Cap and this is nothing but a JOKE...

how many stupid hardcoded things Iīm not aware of after having played this game for years???

while I should have lots and lots of fighters that I could use at the front, the game design obvioulsy wants to avoid such a situation as half of my fighters get damaged from flying Cap... this then means Iīm back at the numbers of early 42...

forgot to set my fighters on escort again so theyīve swept PM again... even though there isnīt air support left at the base Iīve feared enemy fighters at the base last turn possibly taking on my transports flying in supplies for the paras. Thatīs why Iīve ordered a fighter sweep...

after two days of sweeps (without enemy opposition) and flying 50% Cap, my fighter sentais now need at least 10 days to repair all their damaged fighters. This if I stand them DOWN!!!!

Japanese Shock attack

Defending force 780 troops, 0 guns, 39 vehicles, Assault Value = 4

Japanese max assault: 66 - adjusted assault: 64

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 3

Japanese assault odds: 21 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Port Moresby base !!!

Allied ground losses:
478 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 18

suddenly we get a doubled adjusted av and the base fell to my surprise already this turn... itīs 2/17/44 and Japanese troops take back Port Moresby. Doing this without any losses... this makes it even more a shame when I think how many ships Miller lost during his succesful attack on the base. Iīve mentioned it earlier and I still donīt get it. Either I have no clue at all or it is my opponent that doesnīt know what to do at all. Port Moresby was the PRIMARY place on the whole map where he could exploit his position, using the level 8 airfield there to lay waste to every base in range of 11 hexes (P-38J range). And out of this base it would have been easily possible to mount offensives, first targets would have been Thursday Island and Gili Gili. But my opponent does think different... obviously...

sorry, but he really seems to miss how WITP has to be played, in my oppinion it more or less looks like heīs playing an Axis and Allies or Hearts of Iron style game. The Allied had to take some serious blows so far in this campaign but everything that has happened since the unsuccesful invasion of Makin was avoidable. Now that PM has been evacuated, this makes the Allied situation "hopeless". What can they do now? Nothing... Out of PM, offensives would have been easily possible, even without carriers. With the available carriers (probably mostly CVLs and CVEs) it would have been a cakewalk. Not even the fact that the Allied "lack" ground troops would have made this problematic, landing 1000 av would have been enough to take one base after another in this area. Of course the lack of ground troops would have made it slower than usually, but it would have nevertheless easily been possible.

There was only one reason for me to order most of the Southern Area Army to march on Townsville to take Charter Towers and siege Cairns and Townsville: I wanted to put pressure on the Allied to enable me to prepare for an assault on Port Moresby. I had no less than 2500 av prepping to be thrown at the base. The plan was to use my upgraded carriers in two big CV TFs, nearly all my capitol ships, put hundreds of fighters into the bases surrounding PM. Two big sweeps on PM (where I would have suffered hundreds of fighters destroyed against the Corsair/Thunderbolt Cap) followed by massive bombers attacks should have gone in the day when two big cruiser TFs would have done naval bombardments, followed by BB bombardments the day after. PMīs airfield had to be knocked out after one day, otherwise it would have been costly. My carriers would have been 6 hexes away from PM the first day, but would have been in Corsair range the next day. It was all about when we would have been spotted. All my capitol ships would have moved in at full speed, while the amphibious TFs would have been in close range of PM three or four days later. With PMīs airfield knocked out there would be Cooktown left as the major airfield that could launch P-38J escorted 4E strikes on KB and all the other TFs. Townsville and Cairns could only launch unescorted 4E strikes that would hopefully have been shredded by massive Tony/Jack/George LRCAP over my TFs. I expected to encounter 600-800 Allied av at PM (when thinking about the 50.000 troops we spotted there) so my first wave would have consisted of 1500 av going in, keeping 1000 av in reserve. If my bombardments would have been nukes, then the flak defenses would have suffered and I would have switched hundreds of bombers on ground attacks, attacking the (hopefully) max 2 Allied divisions there, rendering them useless due to disruption above 70.

Everything would have been a gamble, if something would have gone wrong, the consequences would (could) have been catastrophic. In any case, it would have been a max effort again and losses would have been high if the Allied commander would have done what I think he should have done. All of those assumptions are now uninteresting though as the Allied have given up their most important base... lol

This means I can now take my troops back out of the Charter Towers area and bring them into defensive positions. This now also means that an Allied assault into my territory would be more or less suicide without major CV support. Major CV support is something the Allied donīt have anymore after the defeat near the Gilberts just a couple of months ago. Itīs still amazing to me how one can misidentify the situation that bad...

after two days of sweeps (without enemy opposition) and flying 50% Cap, my fighter sentais now need at least 10 days to repair all their damaged fighters. This if I stand them DOWN!!!!

I noticed in my own game that % of fighters in repairing when fighter groups only perform CAP may depend on the weather.
In T or R, more damage.
It is just an impression.

the problem is that this didnīt happen until the beginning of 44 so there must be some hardcoded trigger I donīt know of and I have never heard of it before. Anyway, itīs BS and if I canīt set my Cap higher than 20% then I can already surrender...

Allied artillery stays to be a killer. All my troops have been ordered to move back to Charter Towers. No sense getting killed off in Townsville by Allied artillery only...

and this is one of those bases where I would bet my car, my house, my right arm and left leg that bigbaba just doesnīt care about stacking limits at all. And everytime I notice it, it again pisses me off. How can one be so stubborn in violating agreed rules and in the same time so "stupid" to think I wouldnīt notice it.

Sidney is a level 9 airfield, makes it big enough to see a maximum of "around" 495 aircaft there (9x50 + "around" 10%). Well, an airbalance of above 3000 means that there are so many ac there that the number is closer to 1000 than to 500 for sure. Probably overstacked by 100% again and this goes just on and on. As you can see, the airbalance number isnīt influenced by the airfields nearby as they are all empty and mostly not even built up. I can only say it again, the only reason why I still continue this game against my opponent at the moment is the fact I donīt want to drop the game and I wouldnīt find an opponent to take over anyway I gues...

occasional attack on Baker again, nearly no damage and it costs the Allied a couple of bombers... I canīt identify any clear Allied strategy, to be honest, I doubt there is any. The Allied are low on CVs and lost more than just a couple BBs. Still, the Allied have a fully functional airforce and if they want to get going offensively again, then using the airforce en masse concentrated on one area is the only possibility for them to advance somewhere. Well, at some point I bet I will see some sudden "rabbit out of the box" advance against a well defended target without having it bombed to dust before.

and then my airforce will be ready. At the moment, I would say we will see one big battle again (wherever that will be...) and the Allied will be finished off. This will then be the end of this campaign, so Iīm probably spending lots of time for nothing until then, just to see fireworks going off and five or six turns later the game will be over. Itīs a pity, there was more potential in this campaign...

mmm... should have known it better. bigbaba keeps on evacuating Ceylon and I left him alone doing it (because itīs a huge mistake again, Ceylon was one of his chances to put pressure on me, but he missed that, same as Port Moresby ). This turn I flew in some 100 Helens to Madras and Bangalore and set them to nav attack. There are still some ex-carrier based Corsairs at Colombo and they take out two Helens while another three are lost to ops. Makes it a disaster for this sentai as it loses 5 crews and with an experience of 84 we achieve 0 (Z E R O) hits... what a result...

the IJA canīt be used for much more than ASW, with the Peggy going online in half a year we have another competitive torpedo bomber (to support the IJNAF Frances bombers), but Iīm not sure this game will last that long. Weīll see...

an Australian bgd has entered Perth again and didnīt dare to deliberate attack immedietely. This is good news as weīve already picked up 35.000 resources and 60.000 supplies with AKs that are still loading. Gives us another day to load up our ships and then head out. The base will fall tomorrow though.

as expected, Perth fell today. The result of this small scale operation is that weīve captured 35.000 resources and 90.000 supplies. We had only very few losses within this fragment of a nav guard unit and my AKs have picked up all my troops and they are now heading back to Northern Australia. With 4.000.000 supplies total for the Empire (sounds a lot but isnīt that much for the whole map and considering the fact that I nearly overran the whole map), capturing 90.000 from the enemy is very welcome. The AKs will directly head to Northern Australia too to unload their supplies there as the ground war around Townsville really sucked up a lot of supplies (hundreds of thousands supplies!!). With the recapture of Port Moresby we have achieved all our goals and we can now concentrate on a defensive strategy, sit back and wait is the motto now. In the next two months alone, we will get inf units with together more than 2000 av. And there are many more inf units to come until mid 44. MANY MORE! At Charter Towers I have now 8.000 av, Northern Australia has 2.000 and in the Alice Springs area I have another 1.500. The Allied have a total of 4.500 sitting at Cairns and Townsville. Anoteher 4000 at Malir in India. Iīve got 6.500 in India. The Russian have something like 4.500 (1.000+ cut off and out of supply in Blogoveshchensk, the rest in Irkutsk). I expect the Allied to have another 4.000 dispersed on the map that could be used for offensive operations in the Pacific. And thereīs China of course, some 7.000 - 10.000 Chinese av left, mostly without heavy weapons and mostly starving I guess.

Russian av is going down by half a dozen av daily, in six months the majority of the Russian troops here will have starved to death and we will only need a bgd to keep the rest of this POW camp honest. Same as what weīve done with Manila. Iīve thought I would not be able to use Manila as a training target for longer than mid 44 maximum (then I would have taken the city with a nav guard unit) and this was one of the reasons I attacked Russia. Ohkaīs 400 oil centers was another one, all the resources and HI is just a gift. Blagoveshchensk is the only base on the map that has three bases in one hex range which is optimal for training raids. And itīs so far North, it will be out of range of Allied bombers more or less until the end of the war. This couldnīt been said about the Philipines or China and in China I donīt have a base near an enemy base anyway, so the chance to do training runs in China isnīt existing. 100+ fighters over Chungking daily (upgraded to spits and Warhawks - must meand thereīs still over 20.000 supplies) would make it costly anyway, so no sense looking for training opportunities in China anyway. So far, strategically spoken, everything has gone just perfect...

A note on my industrial situation: everythingīs going just fine, we produce 5000 oil per day more than we need, HI is 15.000+ and is accumulating slowly, we have a couple of hundred thousand HI in the pool, going up daily. We produce enough ac and have enough reserves in the pool to have no need to keep the aircraft production running full speed, we have switched over hundreds of fighter factories to R&D of new types already. When I had 600 Tony factories running when the fighter has gone online, we scaled max production back to 260 already. Same goes for the IJNAF fighters, from a total of 800 (Zeke, Jack and George together) we now have a max capacity of 600 with 50% Zeke production halted already as we only need the Zeke for carrier based daitais, land based daitais on the front will only be equipped with Jacks and Georges. Frank R&D is running full speed and in mid 44 I will be able to upgrade all my IJAAF fighters to Franks within two months. If I get the fighter three months earlier (chance to achieve that is there) then I will have upgraded all my front line IJAAF fighters to Franks in 7/44. Helen pool looks good, production capacity is around 140, Peggy R&D is running but I donīt expect much so it will come online in 9 or 10/44 with the Helen factories auto upgrading we will be producing some 250 if I donīt change anything of the current situation. Got 300 Francesī in the pool and enough capacity to produce enough to reequip all my IJAAF bomber daitais within a day but I hope this doesnīt have to happen. Still enough Betties in the pool for training daitais. The only downside at the moment is the fact that we wonīt get the Reppu until mid 45 so the carriers are stuck with obsolete Zekes until then (and who knows if the campaign will reach mid 45). At the end of 44 we would get the c version of the Frank with an armament value of 14 (more than most Allied fighters with 12), this should be a nice bomber killer.

Naval construction is running full speed, have accelarated three remaining Unryu class carriers and should get them all within the next 7 months. Same goes for Shinano which was never stopped and always has been being built at normal speed. Thereīs one more Agano class CL in the queue which has also been accelerated. To do all this I had to stop a nearly a dozen subs due to their high endurance, two subs need as many shipyard points as does one Unryu class carrier. All 3.500 endurance RO class subs have been halted right from the start. Naval shipyards have also been increased right from the start. Merchant shipyard is running hot with not enough points to produce everything in the queue at the moment. As soon as the modern PCs can be accelerated they get accelerated. Already received some three dozens of them, but no Allied subs are around. LOL. Makes it easy for me to run my economy full speed. Got 190.000 armament points in the pool, have shut down several factories. 40.000 vehicle points in the pool, shut down 85% of my total capacity, only one armored div is missing, will receive that in something like early 45.

The Allied have been missing the chance to draw me into an atrittion battle right from the start and therefore everythingīs just fine when looking at the overall situation. The fact that we will get lots of bgds and divs will make the situation even better as I will then be able to not just prepare a first line of defense (that has been ready since months already) but also a second line of defense with strategic reserves in key positions.

Hereīs a screenshot of the industry situation. As you can see, not that bad.

With the strategic situation as it is now, thereīs no way for the Allied to really cause me industrial problems anytime soon. They are far away from a strategic bomber offensive against Japan and within this year we will have stockpiled so much oil/resources that we wonīt have any shortages in 46.

most of the Allied units have arrived at Chengtu and bigbaba has ordered a bombardment. Result are only ALLIED losses as nearly 2700 av donīt even have a dozen guns... we have level 9 forts and nearly 400 guns but with the stupid ground combat model we will see what will happen. Knowing the answer anyway: undersupplied Chinese hordes, armed with sticks will shock attack me out of my bunkers...

The result of 03/03/44īs Chinese shock attack at Chengtu came up at such a stupid result I forgot to save the cr due to being so upset about such a 100% failed ground combat model, itīs a shame it can be so bad as this pretty much makes everything completely laughable that comes along from those (this?) developer(s). The Chinese got an adjusted av of 2000+ while our av got halved. They had a laughable number of 11 guns, we had 370. Result was that we get our heads chopped while the Chinese laugh while they do their ancient style attacks with sticks and their 11 undersupplied mortars. This ground combat model STINKS and so does the one who came up with such a thing. Noone is asking for a perfect game but what we see here (once again) is just so off, itīs more of a fairy tale you tell your 3 year old grandson than anything else. A 4 year old would already tell you that youīre telling him BS. No, complete BS...

Pissed off by the "Gary Grigsby most stupid ground combat model ever", I thought what perfectly works for Chinese units that have most time NO supply and that have NO heavy weapons will also work for 99 exp, fully supplied Japanese units, but once again the "Gary Grigsby most stupid ground combat model ever" doesnīt work that way for the Japanese. While our troops behind level 9 forts get their adjusted avs halfed, undersupplied Chinese units without heavy weapons just get perfect avs, but even worse, they inflict 5000 casualties with their sticks... Mr. Grigsby, 100% fail... Nothing in WITP is as bad as the ground combat model. While you can "accept" it as long as both sides have reasonable numbers and all are supplied, those things that now happen in China are the prove how poor the choice of influencing factors are because something that would be near realistic outcomes would see the Chinese being killed in the tens of thousands when they do shock attacks without having supply and without having heavy weapons.

Iīm quite experienced in WITP but I did not know that the ground model was that BS while bigbaba already knew that supply or heavy weapons arenīt important and therefore he just shock attacked me and the BS kicked me around the map. Unfortunately it doesnīt work the other way around, supply and heavy weapons must be a negative factor for this oh so well programmed ground combat model. Doesnīt it really hurt if you come up with a product that is partially so broken. I wouldnīt be satisfied with such a BS and I canīt believe it would be so much work to make out of supply troops completely useless (as this is what out of supply units are). No, in Gary Grigsby wonderland, out of supply units still fight with 25% of their av and with the other stupid multipliers they can even get adjusted avs that are mulitple times higher than their base avs. Very well done...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

itīs all about assault value. Supply? Not needed? Heavy weapons? Not needed. All you need is assault value. Wonder how the Nazis could lose the real war. Oh wait, it was real and GG wasnīt in charge on the East front.

Result of this stupidity once again: my troops get shock attacked out of a fully supplied level 9 fort base (100% prepped of course) by Chinese units that would have no combat value (or a very small one) in reality. Heck, I must get away from reality and get myself back into GG wonderland. And once again, I shouldnīt complain. GG let me conquer nearly the whole map and sink two dozen Allied carriers for nearly no loss on the Japanese side.

we have a huge Army marching on Kweiyang with lots of "tanks" and heavy weapons. Guess the stick armed Chinese will kill off my troops in the thousands and my tanks in the hundred. Doing this with the magic weapon: "assault value". Russian soldier shouting over to German Tiger tank: "hey, we donīt have a heavy AT gun but we just killed you with our assault value" "BOOM". German Tiger crew abandons tank and shoot themselve in their head. BOOM

after recon has told me that nearly all aircraft but not all ground units were evacuated from Colombo I was sure that bigbaba would send more TFs to pick up the troops there so Iīve moved some high experienced bombers and fighters to Bangalore and set them on nav attack. Weather was bad yesterday (when the TF hasnīt arrived at Colombo) so my bombers stayed grounded. We take off today and to my surprise, 63 high experienced fighters werenīt able to deal with 3 Corsairs on Cap and after having one fighter damaged, the Corsairs attacked the bombers but thankfully only damaging one...

Then the TF is shot up...

we also launch a full strike with the remaining undamaged bombers and sink more of the small, medium and big AKs in this TF. Really a nice result for this day, guess we sink a dozen AKs for not even a single loss on my side (even though flak seemed to be quite strong). The Frances really is an improvement over the fragile Betty. Also in this strike, my escorts werenīt able to deal with two fighters on Cap...

I'm sure you too are watching the results of AE campaigns and taking a look at the ground combat model. I certainly haven't seen anything this ridiculous from it yet.
