To describe this turn the best, those two smileys match best: AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/01/44 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 24,127 Japanese Ships SS I-21, hits 24, on fire, heavy damage Allied Ships DD Bennett DD Bell DD Beale but we start off with an easily sunk IJN sub... a destroyer in the same hex as a sub... glug glug glug... this is near Tasmania where we daily spot lots of big TFs going West. Even though we lose this sub, the intel we got already is enough to put us in a state of high alert. If we spot more than hundred ships over the last couple of days moving towards Perth then this means the Allied are up to something... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52 Japanese aircraft A6M5 Zeke x 183 J2M3 Jack x 69 J1N1-S Irving x 26 D4Y Judy x 78 A6M3a Zero x 54 B6N Jill x 34 G4M1 Betty x 46 Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 35 Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 66 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 39 casualties reported Airbase hits 10 Airbase supply hits 4 Runway hits 162 Port hits 5 Port supply hits 1 Aircraft Attacking: 32 x Ki-43-IIa Oscar bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Blagoveshchensk , at 69,23 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 39 A6M5 Zeke x 27 N1K1-J George x 43 J2M3 Jack x 183 J1N1-S Irving x 99 D4Y Judy x 27 A6M5c Zeke x 45 B5N Kate x 9 P1Y Frances x 153 Ki-61 Ic x 140 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 13 casualties reported Airbase hits 15 Airbase supply hits 5 Runway hits 247 Aircraft Attacking: 32 x Ki-61 Ic bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Petropavlovsk , at 84,32 Allied aircraft PV-1 Ventura x 16 LB-30 Liberator x 32 PB4Y Liberator x 24 B-24J Liberator x 18 Allied aircraft losses PV-1 Ventura: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged LB-30 Liberator: 11 damaged PB4Y Liberator: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged B-24J Liberator: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged Japanese ground losses: 13 casualties reported Airbase hits 7 Airbase supply hits 2 Runway hits 59 Aircraft Attacking: 4 x B-24J Liberator bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Ulan-Ude , at 61,10 Allied aircraft Pe-2 x 193 Allied aircraft losses Pe-2: 30 damaged Japanese ground losses: 122 casualties reported Guns lost 2 Airbase hits 3 Runway hits 36 Aircraft Attacking: 9 x Pe-2 bombing at 15000 feet the Russian continue to fly those IMO completely useless attacks... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- and here comes the funny part of the day... Day Air attack on 3rd AA Regiment, at 45,102 Allied aircraft A-20G Havoc x 36 B-25C Mitchell x 8 Allied aircraft losses A-20G Havoc: 20 destroyed B-25C Mitchell: 5 destroyed Japanese ground losses: 70 casualties reported Guns lost 5 Aircraft Attacking: 7 x A-20G Havoc bombing at 10000 feet knowing that LCUs moving out of Charter Towers immedietely atract massed bomber strikes, this time Iīve set 20 AA rgt/bgd to move one hex out of Charter Towers to take position on the railline. And voila, as predictable as my opponent is , wave after wave attacks my flak trap. You may think that Japanese flak is powerful... well, it isnīt. The reason we hit the enemy hard is because this is an attack on LCUs and in Gary Grigsbyīs world, flak is five times more effective if on the move with other ground troops, whereas itīs not as effective if at a base in prepared positions. what a pity bigbaba went back to 10.000ft attack alt instead of 3.000ft... unfortunately (for him), none of his bases was clouded in and strike after strike went in... muahhhhhhaaahahahaaa... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 3rd AA Regiment, at 45,102 Allied aircraft Liberator VI x 11 P-40N Warhawk x 24 A-20G Havoc x 30 B-24D Liberator x 22 Allied aircraft losses Liberator VI: 2 destroyed, 7 damaged A-20G Havoc: 6 destroyed, 15 damaged B-24D Liberator: 3 destroyed, 16 damaged Japanese ground losses: 198 casualties reported Guns lost 10 Aircraft Attacking: 9 x Liberator VI bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 3rd AA Regiment, at 45,102 Allied aircraft Kittyhawk III x 9 Liberator VI x 12 Ventura V x 7 B-25C Mitchell x 34 B-24J Liberator x 50 Allied aircraft losses Liberator VI: 4 destroyed, 4 damaged Ventura V: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged B-25C Mitchell: 12 destroyed, 10 damaged B-24J Liberator: 4 destroyed, 42 damaged Japanese ground losses: 236 casualties reported Guns lost 4 Aircraft Attacking: 8 x B-24J Liberator bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 7th Heavy AA Battalion, at 45,102 Allied aircraft Kittyhawk III x 10 A-20G Havoc x 185 B-25C Mitchell x 36 B-25J Mitchell x 52 Allied aircraft losses A-20G Havoc: 28 destroyed, 73 damaged B-25C Mitchell: 8 destroyed, 17 damaged B-25J Mitchell: 3 destroyed, 23 damaged Japanese ground losses: 504 casualties reported Guns lost 18 Aircraft Attacking: 28 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 10000 feet especially the Havocs are hit hard... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 23rd AA Regiment, at 45,102 Allied aircraft Kittyhawk III x 12 Liberator VI x 6 Ventura V x 5 B-25C Mitchell x 12 B-24J Liberator x 2 Allied aircraft losses Liberator VI: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged Ventura V: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged B-25C Mitchell: 3 destroyed, 6 damaged B-24J Liberator: 2 damaged Japanese ground losses: 131 casualties reported Guns lost 7 Aircraft Attacking: 1 x Liberator VI bombing at 10000 feet in the end the fields around Charter Towers were full of burning Allied bomber wrecks... I guess this is the best result ever achieved by me, playing as the Japanese PBEM. bigbaba stated that Japanese flak is very powerful in this mod, I answered that it only depends on the number of units. In fact, my flak is nearly useless, if you have a dozen base forces somewhere youīve got to be really lucky if you are able to take down more than one bomber out of 200 due to the so high durability of Allied bombers. A couple of Allied base forces completely shred IJA bombers to pieces though, if you dare to attack an Allied base. This turn was very funny to watch. Itīs not a decisive attack and losing more than 100 bombers in one day is nowhere hurting the Allied but I guess it has an effect. bigbaba will think twice about attacking an LCU if it moves out of Charter Towers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 26th Rifle Division, at 69,23 Japanese aircraft J2M3 Jack x 27 A6M3a Zero x 27 P1Y Frances x 34 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 2 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 27 x A6M3a Zero bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 30th Chinese Corps, at 41,35 Japanese aircraft Ki-61 Ic x 31 Ki-49 Helen x 65 Allied aircraft Spitfire Vb x 11 Spitfire VIII x 15 P-40N Warhawk x 20 Japanese aircraft losses Ki-61 Ic: 14 destroyed, 3 damaged Ki-49 Helen: 6 destroyed, 30 damaged Allied aircraft losses Spitfire Vb: 5 destroyed, 1 damaged Spitfire VIII: 5 destroyed, 5 damaged P-40N Warhawk: 5 destroyed, 10 damaged Allied ground losses: 50 casualties reported Guns lost 1 Aircraft Attacking: 17 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 6000 feet I was nearly shocked about so much action this turn. Weīve spotted occasional LRCAP over Kweiyang a couple of turns earlier already and today our incoming strikes meet enemy fighters. Even though we have nearly 100 Tonies set to escort Changshaīs bombers, only one sentai shows up with the first wave and both my fighters and bombers are hit hard. Especially the Spitfire VIII proves to be vastly superior to the Tony. The first round went to the Allied... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 56th Chinese Corps, at 41,35 Japanese aircraft Ki-61 Ic x 32 Ki-49 Helen x 44 Allied aircraft Spitfire Vb x 10 Spitfire VIII x 14 P-40N Warhawk x 17 Japanese aircraft losses Ki-61 Ic: 4 destroyed, 11 damaged Ki-49 Helen: 8 damaged Allied aircraft losses Spitfire Vb: 2 destroyed, 6 damaged Spitfire VIII: 8 destroyed P-40N Warhawk: 17 destroyed Allied ground losses: 10 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 14 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 6000 feet here comes the second wave and as it is always, defending Cap gets hit hard if there are follow on strikes. The enemy did NOT bounce us and this lead to a disaster within the enemy fighters. The Chinese Warhawks were dead meat, they suffered 17 fighters shot down for not a single kill. The four Tonies shot down all went to the Spitfire pilots (1 kill for the Vb and 3 for the VIII). The damage done to the Chinese troops is probably completely useless once again as it doesnīt matter if you disrupt one or two of the completely out of supply troops when there are three dozen of them. One of my Tony sentais is out of the war for two months again, a third of the sentaiīs pilots died today. Hopefully the enemy lost some pilots too but I donīt have much hope on that as most of them probably were saved due to having fought over their own base. Like Iīve said, so much action, I wasnīt used to... In total, we nearly achieved a 6:1 in aircraft kills today. Not bad for early April 44? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Kweiyang Japanese Shock attack Attacking force 291138 troops, 2647 guns, 3338 vehicles, Assault Value = 6082 Defending force 113664 troops, 50 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2856 Japanese max assault: 10960 - adjusted assault: 5448 Allied max defense: 2474 - adjusted defense: 4409 Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 7) Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 6 Japanese ground losses: 11789 casualties reported Guns lost 253 Vehicles lost 61 Allied ground losses: 2591 casualties reported Guns lost 11 as we seem not to be able to reduce a fort level with our combat engineers Iīve ordered a shock attack, while being well aware of the fact that the unsupplied enemy stick equipped army will kick our arse. We reduced a fort level and suffered for doing so. We can order one more attack and then my Army is exhausted and has to retreat. Very well done. With this ground combat model I have yet another Army being shredded by an enemy that has no heavy arms and is completely out of supply. And this for over a year already. While we could kick the Chinese around at will in 42 (when they had full supply and lots of heavy weapons), some hardcoded BS seems to prevent us from achieving anything. The situation now is that I will do one more attack (hoping to reduce at least another fort level) and then retreat our exhausted troops (mostly down to 80% combat readiness) into a base South of Kweiyang to recover. In the meantime I will have moved in another 1000!!! combat engineers (those that were 100% useless at Irkutsk against 2500 Russian av ) and another 2000 av from Southern Area Army units. Yes, Iīm planning to use Southern Area Army units in China. While I rushed through the Chinese in 42 without the need of Southern Area Army units, I do need them now as the Chinese are fighting better with sticks than with heavy weapons. And you donīt need supply to use a stick... Thereīs only some positive things at the moment (at least I think there are). As the enemy has been starving for over a year already I doubt that there are a lot of engineer squads left and when I look at how long it takes them to repair their level 4 airfield from one attack then I guess they wonīt ever be able to build up the forts again as I wonīt ever let the airfield get repaired again. And as I can see a steady decrease of Chinese av (means they are completely out of supply and starving to death) this means they wonīt recover their disabled squads and while I will bring up my troops to 100% strenght again, the enemy wonīt. It will be a long way to go, but I can guarantee you that at some point we will be victorious. I will get another 2000 av from reinforcements the next 45 days and they will all head to China to gain combat experience. This will give me fresh troops to rotate my worn down units and this also will bring up my new unitsī experience levels. With the situation on all other fronts at the moment, I donīt see a need of those reinforcements being sent to the Pacific front anytime soon. I guess our main problem is the fact that it takes us 20 attacks until we will have brought down the forts from 9 to 0 and 20 attacks means 100.000-150.000 casualties (mostly disablements for the attacker). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Blagoveshchensk Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 49245 troops, 529 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 1018 Defending force 53285 troops, 31 guns, 152 vehicles, Assault Value = 1097 Allied ground losses: 26 casualties reported -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at 43,33 Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 109276 troops, 1346 guns, 25 vehicles, Assault Value = 2312 Defending force 80165 troops, 67 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1719 Allied ground losses: 13 casualties reported -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Blagoveshchensk Allied Bombardment attack Attacking force 8595 troops, 6 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1097 Defending force 52645 troops, 529 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 1018 Allied ground losses: 7 casualties reported Guns lost 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Trimcomalee Japanese Shock attack Attacking force 1192 troops, 19 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 35 Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0 Japanese max assault: 28 - adjusted assault: 9 Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1 Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 9) Japanese forces CAPTURE Trimcomalee base !!! Japanese para units are still in use and they are once again highly succesful. Noticed that bigbaba moved out all his units from Trimcomalee (including the STATIC unit - guess the 9.1 inch CD guns that make the unit static have been destroyed earlier) and so my paras took an empty base. With the Allied evacuations that were going out from Ceylon I doubt that thereīs a lot left at Colombo. Will move in more troops and take out the whole island. All in all a day with lots of action (considering how boring this PBEM is) and some highly succesful actions too.
