Long time lurker since the days of UV. Only recently more active poster, but I recognize your avatar pix.
The game is a significant improvement over WiTP. More of everything. Much more complex and detailed, if you can imagine that. You'll be able to adjust 'upwards' from WiTP, much as you were able to adjust 'upwards' from UV to WiTP.
There is so much to learn it make take weeks before you even decide if you like or not! After playing AE for a while, WITP seems like checkers after playing chess.
Welcome back....In a nutshell, the Devs took all of the "problems" and wish lists the old-timers had mentioned over the last few years, threw in the Andrew Brown mod and map,(made the latter larger), and got some fellas on board who were either pros in related areas or "super-detail grognards", and released it as AE...
I suspect 90% of the newer folk have just no friggin' idea what vast improvements they have before them.

Far, far better than the original. The air combat system is light years ahead of what it used to be. The port loading/unloading rules and stacking limits are vast improvements over the original, as a result the game is far more realistic.
There could be a few tweaks here and there, but that's to be expected. The surface combat and carrier battles may bring some complaints. I can't tell you even though I at 10/42 in my PBEM game. I've avoided major carrier battles and the few surface duels I had I can't draw any conclusions.
From my impressions Japan has a sizeable edge in carrier capability and ability as well as surface combat capability-early on and even to the current point of my game. Still my surface fleet has proven quite useful as raiders.
That being said and done the allieds can really slow down the advance of Japan if you think strategically. Your P-40's and P-39's are not a match for the Zeros, but that hardly makes them useless. They can do what you need them to do if you use your head.
Heavy/medium bombers? Gotta love them. Once again use your head and learn the system and they will repay you tenfold. I love my B-26's and the B-17's and B-24's are in a class of their own. So far the B-25's are ok, but they seem to take heavier losses to enemy fighters.
I've said it before and I'll say it again-forget about having a Midway moment. Against a competent opponent going out and looking for an early carrier battle against KB is a death wish. No human opponent is going to make the same mistakes as Yamamoto did and you don't have the benefit of knowing the enemies plans due to a broken naval code.
Your task as the Allied is to slow down and halt Japanese expansion until your ready to take the offensive in 1943. That's a big challenge in and of itself and a hell of a lot of fun!
As for the AI? Its better than stock, but nothing compared to another player. Think of it as scrimmage-something to learn the basics and mechanics.

Even so its a heck of a lot better than stock WITP, congratulations andy Mac. And if your coming back from a holiday from WITP. AE japanese AI will i guarantee you, make you actually think about allied early war deployments and where and when to fight. I'll not mention any spoilers but get stuck in and prepare to have your backside in a sling for a few months

Well I would consider diving in as japanese in a pbm game but will play the Ai a bit first as allied to feel my bones break.. so far im liking what i see as our old suggestions seemed to have been heard and I like the way the whole thing looks and plays now, so no Mogami for a few YEARS and no pasternaski either.. I dont see zeta16 or any of my old pbm players either.. Can the japanese still invade australia? I only managed to get half of it against zeta16..LOL Liken the cosmetic stuff like way points and such and seems to allow more finer controll like we asked for so the game might be worth puttin in another several years into pbm game. nice to hear from some old names Rob, madflav and bob and especially the newer comers .. Not lookin like alot of the old WW2 vets are around though..

Regarding Australia are you talking about a PBEM player? or the AI?
I'll assume you're talking abt PBEM and yes that is possible. I'm facing that possibility as Port Moresby is looking like it will fall after a lengthy siege. Those Aussies put up one hell of a fight though-outnumbered heavely they fought like Tigers. Took over 1 Corp of the Emperors finest troops to crack that nut and the Emeprors invasion fleet took a pounding from the Costal Guns moved there.
Its Sept 42 though so I'll have to wait and see what my crafty opponent does.
