Far, far better than the original. The air combat system is light years ahead of what it used to be. The port loading/unloading rules and stacking limits are vast improvements over the original, as a result the game is far more realistic. There could be a few tweaks here and there, but that's to be expected. The surface combat and carrier battles may bring some complaints. I can't tell you even though I at 10/42 in my PBEM game. I've avoided major carrier battles and the few surface duels I had I can't draw any conclusions. From my impressions Japan has a sizeable edge in carrier capability and ability as well as surface combat capability-early on and even to the current point of my game. Still my surface fleet has proven quite useful as raiders. That being said and done the allieds can really slow down the advance of Japan if you think strategically. Your P-40's and P-39's are not a match for the Zeros, but that hardly makes them useless. They can do what you need them to do if you use your head. Heavy/medium bombers? Gotta love them. Once again use your head and learn the system and they will repay you tenfold. I love my B-26's and the B-17's and B-24's are in a class of their own. So far the B-25's are ok, but they seem to take heavier losses to enemy fighters. I've said it before and I'll say it again-forget about having a Midway moment. Against a competent opponent going out and looking for an early carrier battle against KB is a death wish. No human opponent is going to make the same mistakes as Yamamoto did and you don't have the benefit of knowing the enemies plans due to a broken naval code. Your task as the Allied is to slow down and halt Japanese expansion until your ready to take the offensive in 1943. That's a big challenge in and of itself and a hell of a lot of fun! As for the AI? Its better than stock, but nothing compared to another player. Think of it as scrimmage-something to learn the basics and mechanics.
