...or overall musical contribution? That was why I voted for JP Jones. Technically he's outstanding, but overall as a musician he shows the whole picture. The same can be said for Paul McCartney, who, IMHO, is a great melodic bassist (the inspiration for Chris Squire, maybe?), a decent guitarist, keyboard player AND noted singer/songwriter. :D That lead line on "Taxman" ? He played it. I would also add Geddy Lee of Rush in the multi-instrumental/singer/songwriter category. Sting, also. Frankly, the tech wizards like Billy Sheehan and Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius, while they they amaze me with their technical prowess, don't move me the same way these other guys do.
