Things are still proceeding according to plan - only lost a handful of cargo ships and a few aux thus far.

This turn I transferred crack pilots from the (R)estricted air commands in Japan and China to the reserve and training commands. Will leave a few skilled pilots and commence training of new cadres.

The KB's air groups are understrength - I will them up with a mix of green and vet pilots.
Especially green fighter pilots are ok, they are expendable and can be allowed to be shot down first. A green bomber pilot doesn't hit anything...so I'd like that only vet's break through to the enemy carriers.

Increased production of the Kate B5N2 in Hiroshima to ca 30.
Also stopped Pete production. Earlier I expanded Zero frame / engine production.
Will leave the rest as is for now.

Plan is to downgrade some of the training units in the Home Islands with obsolete ac to free up modern types for the frontlines.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 17, 41

We're invading Manado and found some PT boats in port.
Incredible that it's possible to hit PT boats from 20k yards....Maybe they were out of fuel? :p

Japanese Ships

CA Haguro

PT TM-12, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT TM-13, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT TM-14, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
PT TM-15, Shell hits 1, and is sunk

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Kuching was bombarded by fast battleships and then captured. We're soon in posession of the entire northern coast of Borneo. Singapore's air defense has been destroyed so we now have air superiority.

Alor Star was abandoned by the enemy and captured today.
Still a slow haul....

In the Central Pacific Tarawa was captured.

The brutal PzB approach to crushing the DEI. I wondered why I woke at 4 this morning in a cold sweat - it is all flooding back to me.
At least there are no nuclear bombardments and precious little torpedo attacks in ports. Still had enough magazine explosions to give me the willies though.

after reading all of the aars.. i think im 100% convinced that task force speed is a huge factor in whether you can hit the ships or not.. so being in port i guess they wern't moving = easy target. ive seen this alot, it may really be helpful to go full / mission speed if you know someones going to be shooting at you, im also convinced going full speed is going to make it very difficult for subs to hit

Afraid is spent most of my luck against you Wob, magazine explosions are much rarer now
2 thus far in this game, the Arizona and an Allied destroyer.

- Invading the PI, Malaya / Burma and DEI is routine - but mess it up and the 2nd expansion stage will be severly disrupted...

Hm, will keep an eye on the effect on speed related to chance to land shell and torp hits Krupp.
Play balance is in general good, but my gut feeling tells me a further slight tweaking is needed.

- Ikea is a cursed Swedish invention, and yes...we got plenty of those labyrinths in Norway The actually created Ikea with red (Norwegian) color scheme instead of the Swedish yellow knowing that this color definetly wouldn't attract much admiration

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 18, 41

Drama near Menado today were Andy got a small bone!

The twin invasion group for Menado and Ternate both arrived and started unloading during the morning hours.

Supporting the invasion was a close support group of 3 destroyers at Menado and a heavy support group of 2 heavy cruisers and 2 destroyers set to patrol / react between the 2 bases.

After unloading all cargo in the morning hours the Menado group was attacked by the cruisers Marbelhead and Tromp as well as 6 destroyers. The close support group fought a lengthy but non-decisive delaying action against the superior enemy force. - Unfortunately this was not enough to turn away the determined US-Dutch TF which pushed through to Menado and sank the entire convoy of 4 smaller escorts and 5 transports! (AE still got a tendency to eliminate all ships in such encounters). 2 of the enemy destroyers seems to have suffered serious damage and was observed in a separate TF by our search planes.

The good thing is that our troops will attack and capture both Menado and Ternate as planned tomorrow. The loss of the ships is regretful but nothing more.

Other news:

We captured Beaufort in northern Borneo today and Manus in the Admirality islands was invaded.
Some Banshee dive bombers from Rabaul attacked the transports near Manus and sank a supply ship.

- Plan is to unload smaller detachments of troops and engineers and start building airfields asap.

A look at the situation in Central China

Trying to open / secure supply and communication between our bases.
The light color displays paths that are currently open even though some of these are contested.
The red lines indicate paths that is the target for the next few months.

When these goals have been achieved it would be logical to try to capture the Chinese bases between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

- Don't want to make China into a major theater, but some adjustments are necessary.

How do you plan to allot your limited amount of Air HQs??
Is the 2nd Air HQ in Manchuria high on your list to be bought out (PPs)??
If so, where does it go??

2nd Air HQ is currently a very sea sick lot on a fast Maru on their way to celebrate Xmas somewhere in the Carolines!

Hi Pauk, thought the numero uno JFB had gone on extended WitP leave!
How's the family doing?

Would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
Maybe I'll crawl back to the puter for a sneak turn tomorrow night when I've had enough food and drink!-)

Hope I will be able to entertain you Kresimir
- You don't feel an urge to return to the service of the Empire?

Lots of things going on;

No enemy air units encountered in Malaya and Luzon and we have established a strong base at Kuching.

Today Alor Star, Manus and Atimonan were captured.
Menado with 3 forts repulsed our attacks. Will try again tomorrow.
In China Andy has given up on Ichang and we continue our treck to secure our supply lines.

In Luzon we don't have enough troops for an all out assault, need the troops from Hong Kong.
Will do what we can here while we await the fall of Singapore.

In Malaya we're slowly trodding south...since we have complete air and sea superiority an amphibious TF has been dispatched. First I was thinking Kuantan, but that dump is only a dead end.
So now I'm thinking about being ambitious; Mersing!

Since our spearheads are pursuing weak enemy forces on the way down the peninsula we have strong forces just waiting to use the rail line, so why not use part of these in an attempt to speed things up. If we get bogged down nothing will be lost and we can bomb the enemy troops from the air and sea.

- 2 fresh divisions are currently unloading at Bangkok and will join the Imp Division at Kota Bahru soon.

What do you think about all this?

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 18, 41

Have you seen the Aussies vs Amis AAR re low allied combat plane losses resulting in a much nastier Burma campaign in April to May since the allied player gets to train up his pilots and then put them in decent planes ? The comment that Japan should engage aggresively and create a pilot meat grinder early seems compelling ?

What are your thoughts /plans ? Any tricks to stop him doing a Sir RObin with allied air units ?

Haven't read the AAR bklooste, but it sounds plausible.
I've decided to concentrate on suppressing Luzon and Singapore first and then concentrate on pacifying Allied air power over Rangoon.

My approch is to fill out air units with a mix of experienced pilots and a steady trickle of rookies.
The latter will usually suffer the casualties while the ones that survive will replace the experienced cadre.

We canno't afford to be dragged into a prolonged battle of attrition though, need to use our superior planes and pilots in the truly decisive theaters.

It's time consuming and hard work to complete the initial phases of the war!
A few mistakes to many and the next phases will be so much more difficult...

Have you started any AE games yourself Fish?

North of the Johore Strait our intel reports 26000 + enemy troops and bombers were sent out in waves. They met very heavy AA and we lost several medium bombers. Not sure were Andy is heading, one way it's better for us to wear these troops down outside of Singapore proper.

We also failed to dislodge the garrison at Manado and have to send reinforcements from Ternate that was secured today.

We captured Ocean Island near Tarawa today and chased away another peasent Army east of Shanghai.

I looked up the W.A. Holbrook
- To me it looks like she never was in active Navy service?

WILLARD A. HOLBROOK, although designated AP-44, was never taken over by the Navy. She began her Army service in June 1941 as USAT PRESIDENT TAFT. In September 1941 she was renamed and hastily converted to carry more troops. Her Navy manning was officially cancelled on 30 Mar 42. She was selected in February 1945 to become a hospital ship and began conversion at Alabama Drydock Co, but was incomplete at the war's end and returned to service in January 1946 as a troopship.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 21, 41

Today we struggled ashore at Tarakan and landed reinforcements at Menando.
I'm having problems with getting supplies to my bases; The neighbouring base has ample supplies but the next door base connected with road and rail has been idling red without supplies for many days. Does anyone know why this is so?

Air

Continued to bomb enemy troop formations in Luzon and north of Singapore.

Forgot to assign an LRCAP to the convoy heading for Mersing and paid the price as a dozen antiquated torpedo bombers attacked and scored hits on a CA and 3 cargo ships. The CA is ok and stays with the convoy, but one AK was sunk and another scuttled.

Will correct the mistake.

I'm having problems with getting supplies to my bases; The neighbouring base has ample supplies but the next door base connected with road and rail has been idling red without supplies for many days. Does anyone know why this is so?

Have a look at the 'supplies required' entry on the base screen. Notice that, unlike WITP, there are buttons beside it. Play with them to get a feel for things. If you have the supplies required on one base set way up then a nearby base might get shortchanged. Without knowing more details that is a best guess.

The daylight encounter was prolonged and the valiant escorts charged the Chikuma as she hammered the convoy!

Two KV's were sunk at the same time as an AVP, a troop ship and a tanker were clubbered!
Then the armed merchant cruiser Prince Robert arrived and a prolonged duel with the Chikuma started.

When ammo for the forward 4x8" guns were expended together with all torpedoes the Chikuma's captain decided to break of the engagement. The Prince Robert was also left sinking.

In all 2 KV's, 1 AMC, 1 TK and 1 AP were sunk.
- Not a great result, but we definetly got potential here!
The goal is to force Andy to protect his convoys and spend more fuel and ships doing so.

I'm aware of this and the nearby bases requirement has been lowered well below the actual supply level, leaving ample amounts of supplies available for transfer to the neighbouring starving base - just doesn't happen....

Is there any chance that the Allied troops in Malaya / Singapore can attack and defeat a Japanese force of 10000+ men landed at Mersing?

Seems like Andy is sending in quite a lot of troops and we have 2 choices:
1. Go ashore and challenge the Allies - thus reducing them from the air and sea making it easier to capture Singapore.

2. Turn around and go back to Khota Baru.

We're currently unloading the 4th, 21st and 33rd Division at Bangkok and these units can rail south in a day or two. The challenge is to occupy the rail line south, and moving by land will take weeks - so our main formations are stuck behind the front.

Need to take a decision before going to bed so, advice sorely needed

Mershing has an Aussie Bde there and if Andy was smart, another Bde has been added. Unless you have suppressed Singapore, his TBs (Swordfish and Vildebeest) will get a shot or two in. I would have 2 subs using this base as one point in my Patrol Zone. Is it worth the risk of a CA or larger getting 2 torpedoes put in her if you send in a SC TF??

Dutch medium bombers - He has three bases that are within range (9) - Singkawang, Medan, and Palembang that have AF 2.

B-17s - They can reach from Batavia.

Just some possible counter moves to take into account.

Good points ny59giants!
- I think we have culled the enemy's sting by now.
The slow TBD's have been shot down - Andy cunningly moved them to Johore and launched them from there instead of from Singapore.

I may risk to get some units stuck a Mersing for a while, but I'll make an experiment and see whether this approach is worthwhile or not. We will never get a more favorable position to attempt such an incursion. If successful we may speed up the fall of Singapore, if not the main army will continue its slow march down the peninsula.

Bad news;

The Chikuma headed west after its convoy battle - I considered putting on full speed but that would seriously restrict our ability to reach back to port. In hindsight we should have taken our chances.

Andy sent the Saratoga towards the Chikuma...and of course they ended up in the same hex and exchanged fire!!!!

It's interesting to see that Noumea is completely undefended - just a small garrison unit.
I'm tempted to keep some carriers in the area, this will keep Andy on edge and prevent him from bringing in reinforcements. If we also can raid the sealanes from the US to Australia we can prevent an enemy buildup and sink some valuable cargo ships. If the enemy carriers come out to play this is a bonus.

As long as we have carriers in the area it is completely safe to capture Rabaul, Kavieng, Shortlands and maybe also Port Moresby. A tempting thought: An early invasion of Noumea - keep the KB around together with subs and bring in supplies and LBA.

What do you think, to ambitious or doable?
- The DEI / Malaya / Phillipine operations will trudge along on their own anyway.

The Mini KB with some reinforcements will support these operations and should be able to handle at least 2 enemy carriers.

A warning:

It seems like I have misunderstood how the supply requirement (+) functionality works.
I thought I could safely set supply requirements for most bases between 1 and 20000.

However this approach seems to be causing havoc; I suddenly had a lot of starving bases with 1 supply and even though a base had 50k+ of supplies it refused to send any surplus to its starving neighbour base.

I have now turned of most of the supply requirements and hope to see an improvement soon.
