I don't really have a great interest in it, more so given its very popular right now so everyone's doing it as a quick ticket. My true love is in hardware and networking. After spending several years taking courses based on other people's recommendations i finally did what felt right to me last year and pursued "what i like" vs. "what's hot and pays well!" The latter strategy ended up not working as even before the Recession the market was flooded with 2 year and cert'fied wannabes and the jobs disapeared and the pay rate plummeted to below what i make now!!!

Course thx to the recession thats now the case in IT too, but at least its something i like to do and its been "personally" rewarding. Its also allowed me to freelance and i've helped several friends and parties with their issues. My goal is to turn it into a paying job, not switch yet again to another track. My credit card is big enough as it is. I am considering CISCO cert but its extremely expensive.

But if you like hardware and networking, you'll enjoy getting the Cisco cert.

Hi Nik,

networking/hardware is what I do. I know when I look at CVs/Resumes I'm lookingfor experience above certs. Certs seem to go in and out of favour. I remember before moving to the US I did my CNE and MCSE and both turned out to be a waste of time as I was given a job because I'd served in the RN. Moving back here it took me 8 months to find a job and all the criteria for being considered over here were based solely on experience. Most people seem to want Windows Server, Exchange, antivirus, backup and some switch technology. I've also noticed a rise in companies asking you to complete written papers as part of the selection process or, more ecently for a job nearby that I've been asked for a second interview, a scenario based paper.

If I can offer any help or advice please let me know.

Thx. This is helpful.

Yes, experience has been the killer for me this year. All the companies want it, even for Entry Level. This is why i've hesitated to spend the massive dough for CISCO. Why bother if it won't matter as they all want "experience"? Ideally i was hoping to get a foot in the door with what i'd accumulated, the A+/Net+ showing that my interest was genuine along with my freelance experience and then get additional credentials while moving up the ladder....(preferably with the company assisting financially as over half my classmates were having done for them, having already secured IT jobs)

I don't know how i'm going to hurdle this one unless the job market opens up. You can't get experience without a job....but they won't hire you without it!

aaaaarrrggg!

How are you doing Dixie as you enter the new year as a parent?

Tired, the last two nights Joshua has wanted cuddles before he'll go to sleep. The only problem was that he wanted them at 1am, so I had to spend an hour and a half sitting up with him. Every time I tried to put him down there was crying. It's worth it though.

How're you?

yeah...a perfect cap to an already crappy post holiday Monday. I am seriously bummed. I was looking forward to the class. I suffered through the programming class and now it appears to be for nothing. (when the instructor asked me why i was there, he blinked....his class is usually part of the Software Testing cert) bugger!

Very sorry to hear that Nik.

Chin up. The first few months are an exercise in parental fatigue and physical stress. It sounds like an eternity, but they will eventually begin to sleep through the night after a few months. It makes all the difference in the world. Until then, fight the good fight mate.

Yep, that first couple of months with the first one seem to be the toughest. Then they start sleeping regularly and it gets better. After the first it gets easier. And it is all more than worth it imo.

I think you would find entry level jobs more readily available without experience requirements in the Cisco field than in basic networking. I have a good friend who got his CNE and now has a job with the university down here. He had no experience.

Of course, better than experience is actually knowing someone. Networking is still the best way to get an inroad. Have you though of doing temp work in your desired field? I had a guy who worked for years as a temp before getting a full salaried job...at the same company.

Another way to gain experience is to look for volunteer IT work to gain experience.

I'm drawn to the CNE cert because it is well beyond stuff in NET+ It looks interesting but it is hidieously expensive and i've already put myself into a big financial hole getting to this point. decisions decisions.

I have considered Temp work. I was offered a position with TekSystems, a contractor company which had an opening with Boeing but i turned it down. Too hinky during the phone interview. I ended up doing some research and found alot more negative things than positive.

I'd be more inclined to do temp work with a good company that has a position with strong possibilities for full time hiring but avoid 'staffing companies' like the plague.

I'm too too worried, usually I'll drop off when CLare starts feeding the wee man. She often goes for a snooze between feeds in the afternoon so we're not missing too much sleep.
