From what the information says it seems as though one should be able to terraform Barren planets, yet it appears that I cannot do so.

What tech or building(s) is needed to do so?

Also what are the cutoffs for popularity affecting your worlds? Is it just once you cross -5? Or does it get worse as you cross other values?

Is attack vs. def as simple as an attack of 5 will kill a def of 5 in one salvo?

I've been getting further along in each attempt, but I know my strategy is suffering due to insuficient understanding of some of these mechanisms.

Thanks

You need to create the Biosphere first - Biosphere Creation or something. After Terraforming.

There are several levels of Population State, each with its trigger level. The first one (Unpopularity) is just a warning. Then Unrest lowers tax income, Revolt stops production, etc.

Nope, defense works in misterious ways.   It's not as simple as what you described. Only Neutron knows how though. Shields are color coded in battle though, and the Advisor in battle describes this.

Thanks for the info.

The combat question was more to help understand what level of inferior ship is required to be equivalent to a stronger ship.  Not that it seems to be a huge deal, as discussed elsewhere the battles are not usually close affairs.

one thing I noticed with the bio-sphere, at least on dead worlds you need to build the last weather device first. It is the the one that looks like a volcano with purple smoke coming out of it.
I also think you need to have fully upgrade the industrial construction center to the last level to a technology center on the planet you want to build the biosphere.

In order to create a biosphere, you need to have an atmosphere first
