Hi all,

Russia tests stealth fighter jet built by Sukhoi

by BBC

A new stealth fighter has made its maiden flight in Russia's far east.

The Sukhoi T-50 jet spent 47 minutes in the air over Komsomolsk-on-Amur and test pilot Sergei Bogdan said "it is easy and comfortable to pilot".

The jet - also known by the Russian designation PAK FA - is seen as a potential rival to the US F-22 Raptor, which first flew in 1997.

The "fifth generation" jet is designed to be invisible to radar. Russia's air force hopes to acquire it in 2015.

"Potential rival"? Looks like a direct copy to me.

Yep... copy... and about 15+ years behind the original...

Hi all,

quote:

I hate this winter. Ice everywhere.

I had to board my train this morning, and didn't notice that I was standing on a patch of ice. I took half a step, and then my legs just disappeared under me. Time slowed down, and I had time enough to think "this is going to hurt, and there's nothing I can do about it". Then I landed square on my tailbone; when 6 feet 6 inches and 235 pounds lands like that, it HURTS LIKE A <EXPLETIVE DELETED>!!!!!!!

I'm glad it's the weekend; I feel like a very large man has beaten me enthusiastically all over my body.

BTW, what shoes you use? Can you use trekking / mountain climbing shoes to go to work (and change there to something else)?

I have pretty good trekking / mountain climbing shoe and metalk spikes attached to it (when needed) for extra grip on ice (it is easy to put them on / off)...

I wear hiking boots for my commute. Plenty of grip on the soles; I suspect it was the action of my having to turn around while standing on top of the ice that triggered the fall.

Once at work, I wear a comfortable pair of thick-soled running shoes. It also helps that there's almost never any ice on the floor there.

Hi all,

Yesterday night it was "The Long Night of Museums" here...

Among other things I, again, put my hands on some beautiful stuff in technical museum:

Republic P-47D Thunderbolt "13109"

DB-601 (one of the handful preserved in the world!)

RR Merlin II (Picture is not from the museum - I couldn't find one)

Allison J35 (Picture is not from the museum - I couldn't find one)

P.S.  It doesn't take a whole lot of snow to be snowed in here.

Probably 5 inches before we went to bed late last night, and still some sleet coming down.  No need to be on the roads.

Sometimes I wonder if he's faking it. I also wonder how me in a good mood matches up against Mike in a bad mood.

The birds in my back yard are too stupid to go to the feeder. Instead they're digging into 8 inches of snow to find food. Thus the term bird brain is appropriate here.

Yes, there is a small one behind the house. There is a creek that runs through it so it is a protected watershed and won't be developed. This is one reason we really liked the location.

Nah, still coming down. Once it's over, we'll move the two cars that we parked in the driveway, and shovel the couple of feet that are left. 5 minute job.

Posing....well, probably glaring at the cat is more like it. The feeders have been hugely crowded today (obvious reason). This is quite the attraction for the cats.

Yep! Won't be long either. It'll be in the forties (5-7 C) by Monday.
