Wish I could be there...almost came to Orlando this week for a couple of investment conferences, but one of them was offered on a webcast, so I decided to stay here. Could have been a nice working vacation though.

I think WWIII in Europe would have ended with the use of nuclear weapons because the Soviets would have been unable to achieve their objective without them.

Irrelevant. Baseless conjecture.

Hi all,

Apparently there are 80 cm of snow in Washington D.C. in USA...

My cousin is in Richmond Virginia (rather close by)...

Yes, most of my family is in Baltimore, and they are buried under 20+ inches. All just heavy rain as far south as we are in NC.

Not even a snowflake here.

Indeed, Leo, what you ask is exactly what should be done.  Sadly, most people just panic and jam on the brakes, hoping to stop.  With automatic transmissions, just put the car in neutral and then turn off the ignition.

It is definitely possible. The problem is that once ignition is turned off, so go the steering and the brakes. Unless you have a pretty long and straight piece of ground to coast to a stop on, bad stuff will happen. As little as a 1/4 turn of the wheel will lock it. Brakes do not respond (instead, the master cylinder fills with air). Faced with that situation I would still kill the ignition, coast to as slow of a speed as I dare, then pull the ebrake and pray I wont fishtail. I can only hope that I will have the presence of mind to keep my wits about me the whole time.

Darwin Award nominee:

Sledder, 62, hurt when improvised rocket blows up Posted: Feb. 5 3:24 p.m. INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 62-year-old sledder looking for a burst of power got it when the homemade rocket strapped to his back exploded, burning him over nearly 20 percent of his body. Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was hospitalized in stable condition Monday. The man was hosting a Sunday night sledding party when he filled an automobile muffler with gasoline and gunpowder, strapped it to his back and had it lit, seeking what McCabe called "a rocket-launch effect." The device blew up as the man headed downhill, causing second-degree burns to his face and right side of his body and possible eye damage. No charges have been filed against the man, whom McCabe said is known for doing "outrageous things" at his sledding parties.

I think the guy had to have died in order to be eligible for a Darwin.

One of the suburbs between Baltimore and DC is now reporting over 32 inches of snow on the ground and another 2-4 on the way.

No idea.

On one hand, the Challenger 2 has Dorchester armour (Chobham v2) and ERA blocks, but on the other hand, it's a lot of RPG's.

Since I've failed to track down corroborating facts, the story could be apocryphal.

interesting. Reminds me of the Chetznen thing. The alleged poor preformance and large losses of Russian tanks during the city fighting was touted as alleged proof that all Russian AFV's were "crap". Never mind that the fighting conditions were unsuited for tanks, the lack of infantry support, the poor tactics and leadership involved, enemy guerilla tactics and last but not least the fact that many AFV's were assaulted from window and rooftops pointing down at the tank's top armor.

oh no....the battle proved that Russian tanks, including the newer ones....were all CRAP!

I wonder if there have been attempts by someones' armed forces to modify tanks for urban warfare settings.

Yep. The IDF has done it. The Germans had a project for the Leo 2 that failed to get funded.

I don't think they have to actually die, just remove themselves from the genepool. Being dead is the most obvious way of doing it, but (iirc) there is the other way.

That's what I thought I would do in such a situation, but I wasn't sure it would work, although I guess one could test the senario. With electronic linkage to the accelerator, that's something everyone should know.

Or just open your door and stop with your feet just like Fred Flintstone.

I aw England/USA play at Soldier Field. There were 30,000 screaming England fans, a few bewildered Mexicans and 5 Americans. Got drunk, yelled a lot, the kids laughed, wife drove me home. And we won.

Living in the past, sprior?

No way we're succumbing to your English squad again this year, mate. Plus, we'll drum up DOUBLE our fan support here (10 bewildered Mexicans and 10 Americans).

Then, my Uncle LeRoy went to truck driving school. One day in class, the instructor said to Unk's podnuh Aloysius "Slider Man" Redbone, "Al (they called him Al), you're driving up a hill and your partner LeRoy there is taking a nap up in the sleeper. When you get to the top, you see at the bottom ahead of you that there's been an accident, and the road is blocked with wrecked cars, pedestrians, cop cars, ambulances, and even a fire truck. There's no way around, so you hit your brake pedal, and it goes all the way to the floor. No brakes, and now you're headed down that hill at 65 miles per hour, right at all those people and vehicles. What do you do?"

"Well," says Al, "I'm reachin' back into the sleeper and wakin' up LeRoy."

The instructor, puzzled, asks, "Why would you do that?"

Al replies, "'Cause ole LeRoy ain't never SEED no accident like the one we's about to have."
