ORIGINAL: Joe 98 And what is .Net ?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework Basically a library of procedures and function which are installed on your system...alot of programs will access these procedures and functions in order to execute properly. If you don't have the .NET framework installed, it will likely limit the available software you can run...which will only get more limited as time goes on I would suspect. Depends on whether commercial programmers retain their ability to program (or if the new breed gains the ability to program). quote:
ORIGINAL: JudgeDredd For example, alot new games insist on the installation of .NET and if you don't have it installed, the game won't run - afterall, it's using a shed load of functions provided by the .NET system. So far only two have interested me. In the one case, it turned out to be a good thing I didn't buy it. In the other case, well, I bought it because I didn't know of the requirement (read: Advanced Tactics). quote:
ORIGINAL: JudgeDredd Meant to say I was particularly saddened by the inclusion of the garbage collector. Whilst a good idea, I always felt as a programmer if you couldn't release what you used then you probably shouldn't be programming. The inclusion of the garbage collector system only encourages programmers to be flippant with their code (imo)...on the other hand, it does mean peoples machines will be "protected" to some degree from running out of resources. Great example. It not only increases programmers' dependency on Microsoft (does anybody think that's a good thing?), it can encourage even lazier programming (not to mention, in this age of hackers, spammers, virii, future incompatibilities, etc, ...more hooks into my system cannot be a good thing). I won't (knowingly) buy a game that needs any version of (dot)Net. Even if every single programmer "falls into the Net*," I still have enough games to last several lifetimes. (and if push comes to shove, I have a family I could pay attention to. ...In dire times that is! *grin*) * Horrible pun intended. *sheepish grin*
