Oh, Goodness Thread that's funny!

Erm (wipes tear from cheek)...let's just say that I respectfully disagree with your point of view on this topic.

Why?

When you buy me a beer as AS1Steve's hosted AE get together in Nebraska this August, I'll be happy to go into it in more detail...

Until then, it's likely a little political for THE THREAD, so I'll let it rest there.

Errr....CB? It's AW1 Steve. Not AS. And AS is a sub tender. AW stands for Air Warfare operator (or in my day , Aviation Anti-submarine warfare operator), I might tend bar , but I never tend subs! (tend to , as in sink them , yes). Just a point "for the good of the order".

My bad. S and W are pretty close together on the keyboard. However, you're evading the point about you hosting the Nebraska get together (and buying the beer), *AW1Steve*. Are you serious about this or just engaging in so much puffery?

Of course I'm serious about hosting and buying the beer. My only question is what kind of facilities I'll have available. I haven't made a "house-hunting trip" yet (I'm planning on doing so in less than 2 weeks) so I don't know if I'll have a house (my hope--probably base housing) an apartment , a tent or a hole in the ground. I am definately serious about a small to medium get-together. The only question is how many people I can "put up". That I won't know for a while. I will know important things , like what kind of beer is available locally (and what I need to bring from the DC area on my move).

Ooooh. "Puffery". Thats a legal term, right?

No , it's a term used by lawyers. It's not a legal term. It's also a term used in the "porn industry". I don't use the term as it's used by either industry. I use it to mean "something Yuri said off the top of his head".

What - you don't like the boots?

Just think how cozy warm you could get with her on those bitterly cold Swedish nights ... how much fun she'd be for a little hokey-pokey in the sauna ... what a great guard dog she'd make for scaring off burglars ...

Sometimes I wonder about you, Pas.

Sometimes, I don't. Sometimes.

I never wonder about Pas. Worry , absolutely. Wonder, never!

Quite good! I'm off work today so I have a long weekend. Nothing special that must be done. The sun is shining from a blue sky, the birds are singing as if they know spring is on the way, temp is just below 0C. I think I'll go out for a walk and enjoy the day

Once again  things are 'interesting" in DC. Last evening some moron decided to play shoot out at the OK corral with the guards at the Pentagon! Geez! What kind of a fruitcake tries to play shoot out with some of the best armed, best trained security people in the world? It's about as effective as trying to stop a truck (lorry) by throwing a bluebird at it! About the only thing he succeeded in doing was screwing up the morning commuter traffic by forcing Metro to close the station while the CSI people do their investigation. Really , that's like trying to get back at your enemy by bleeding on his carpet!

Back from a nice promenade ... what a wonderful day. Spring is just around the corner!

It certainly has been a snow-rich winter. Attaching a picture I recieved from my ol' man (1000 km up N) earlier today.

Will be absent until tomorrow - I'm off to Friday Night Poker with some friends

@ Grollub-that sounds like a great start to the weekend! Enjoy.

Just out of curiosity, what type(s) of poker are most popular with your group?

When has UbiSh*t ever released a game that wasn't a colossal, steaming puddle of diarrhea?

They must have at some point, I just can't think of any right now. SH3 turned out great in the end, but that was despite rather than because of Ubisoft. Sad that SH5 turned out pants, they had enough experience to make it a good game.

And why are they always US or German subs/u-boats?

ORIGINAL: radar

I was just made aware that today is the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. My dad was a radarman aboard the Fletcher Class destroyer USS Terry, which was assigned a pre-invasion bombardment mission. The following is an account of the action that entailed.

At 02:45 on the morning of 1 March, Terry was assisting USS Capps (DD-550) in a search for a Japanese submarine, when a low enemy torpedo plane approached her starboard bow. He dropped his torpedo about 1,000 yards from Terry. The recognition officer spotted the intruder at precisely that moment and sang out "Torpedo Away". Terry leaped ahead at flank speed and came hard right. The torpedo passed harmlessly, 50 yards astern.

By 07:20, Terry was heading for a screening station north of the island. As she passed Kitano Point on the northern coast of Iwo Jima, an enemy battery opened fire and got the destroyer's range immediately. Terry responded with her main battery. Her high speed and radical maneuvers did not spoil the enemy's aim and, although eventually silenced, the battery scored a direct hit on the destroyer's starboard main deck. The starboard engine stopped, and Terry lost steering control and telephone communications.

Terry opened range with her port engine while USS Pensacola (CA-24), USS Nevada (BB-36), and some destroyers put the shore battery out of action. Ships and boats swarmed to Terry's aid. Medical personnel and repair crews came aboard in surprisingly short order. Her wounded received emergency treatment on board, then were transferred to hospital ships. Terry headed for the southern coast of Iwo Jima where she laid to for two days while undergoing emergency repairs. On 3 March, she cleared the Volcano Islands on the first leg of a long voyage back to the United States.

Good description, Radar.

Apparently he wounded (lightly?) two of them. The kicker is, it does not seem to have much to do with the middle east or terrorism (in the common sense).

That looks very Scandinavian. Seems gorgeous up there. But Per, I think you gotta get up there and shovel some more snow. We cant see the ground.

Were you having corn pops too? Try not to envision any particulate matter in that steaming puddle, will ya? That would really make things worse.

It's geographically dead center in the middle of the USA. Which is why it was chosen to be headquarters for the Strategic Air Command (now absorbed by Strategic Command, the reason my spouse has orders there) during the cold war.

Of course in two years I'll probably be back in either Washington DC or Jacksonville Florida so you might want to put off your visit till then , unless you really like steak, corn and horses!

Hey, i like Steak and corn, and my spouse like horses. I mean, not for eating, you see

Cool. And of course there will be airplanes. Lots and lots of airplanes. And beer.

Steak, beer, corn and airplanes? You know, Steve, I could be in Nebraska in about 8 hours drive...

Don't forget that North Platte, NE has the world's largest railroad classification yard.

And Council Bluffs Iowa , has the Union Pacific museum. Someone told me that ther are 5 railroad museums in the area. To bad I don't get enthusiastic about trains.

In reference to WITP AE, Hastings, Nebraska was the site of a huge naval ammuntion storage depot. When I was a kid it was miles and miles of bunkers. I wonder if it's still there.

By the way, August sounds good to me, too.

By the way, found a youtube video of the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot.
