At 16 , many (I would suggest most) American kids have part time jobs, help out with errands (such as carting their younger siblings around) and in general are on their way to becoming reposible adults. I might also point out that in every state I've been in (only around 42) ANY moving viloation results in the kid having their drivers licence suspended , higher insurance rates for their parents and the hairy eyeball of the justice system focusing on them full force. We've had a tradition in the country of trying ready our children for adult hood before adulthood. This probably dates from before the 2nd World war when so many kids (more than half) came from a rural background, and drove farm machinery , pickup trucks and tractors before 21. It's difficult to give up traditions that were seen as rights because there is no longer a need. Before you laugh , consider this: in how many parts of this country and in fact the world, do children still have the summer off even though they are no longer needed for agricultural purposes. And as a matter of point , a lot of kids graduate from high school at 17 (I did).

When I 1st started visiting Europe , there were many places where there effectively was no minimum drinking age. Even in 1983 in England I was frequently told that 18 was a relatively recent requirement. And today , with 17 being the youngest one can enter the US military (With parental consent and a few additional hoops to jump through).

And about those distance. Many kids do have to drive themselves to consolidated high schools. Buses are not always available. And there's a good rule of thumb, the bigger the distance between cities , the poorer the transportation system). Even large American cities (like for instance Seattle) have extremely poor mass transit systems. At my current abode (DC Metro) I can walk out my front door to jump on the Metro. When I grew up in Maine (in pretty affluent part of the state) I had to drive 120 miles to catch a train.

But I think the biggest reason T is that by 16 our kids don't wear diapers. they usually get rid of them in their 1st year.

Actually it makes great sense to lower the drinking age radically and raise the driving age radically. These brats feel they have to text their hunny behind the wheel now.

No one should be driving until the teenage hormones have subsided and you've had a good flogging from a staff sergeant.

Then that would forbid about 85% of the country from ever driving. And I'm assuming that a CPO is an acceptable replacement for a Staff sergent? ( I'm exempt , we had Gunnies as well as CPO's in AC training!).

Certainly I agree with you, but the practical reality is.....we have ****ty parents over here. And irresponsible teeny boppers. And way too many cell phones.

I have always felt that the answer to that problem is no automatic drivers licence renewal. Your licence is good for 3 years. Near the end of that 3 years , you get a notice to show up for a driving test. The same one as you took when you got your 1st drivers licence. Just as hard , with a real , GD driving evaluator, and a written test to check your knowledge of the laws.

Doctors, pilots, hairdressers, real estate brokers, cab drivers and even lawyers are required to do continuing education. Some even are required to do practical demonstrations. Two areas are not. Teachers, and drivers. There is where are society is screwed up.

Mynok , they have the same sort of parents over there , wherever the hell "there is". Live in a tourist community. You'll see most parents of permissive societied let the children run roughshod. The only exceptions I've seen are 1) extremely religious societies or 2) societies that put the child to work as soon as possible.

People who can , spoil their kids. It's only natural. So what do you want to do? Repeal the child labor laws?

I don't worry about poorly behavied children. It's poorly behaved adults that I have a problem with. And the law won't let me shoot them , or even smack them! Bad adults=bad kids. It's hardly rocket science.

Tithe... Playing Torchlight at the moment. Fun game, and a good example of how you don't have to have a budget of millions and a team of hundreds to pull off a good product. Saw it on Steam for 75% off and bought it immediately.

BTW, I am proud to announce that I can still hold my breath to swim under water (without jumping - starting in water in the swimming pool) the full length (25 meters) of 1/2 size Olympic swimming pool!
