There was many ministers and politicians aboard, Polish Army High Command (land, air, special forces), also some church authorities.
This is a real tragic for our country.

All of them were going to Katyń.

How ironic that the Polish cabinet goes to visit a place to commemorate the death of Polish officers and die themselves. A shame really.

First reports indicate a fog and that the plane -- long beyond its years for flying -- flew too low and hit the tree tops, but this still reminds me of another incident where a famed WW II Polish general -- who was unpopular w/the USSR -- died in a plane crash that apparently wasn't an accident.

Sorry to hear that Doomtrader.
Yes your president was well known here, he made the headlines quite a few times in our newspapers. Sad to hear 132 people died in an airplane crash.

/update

It was even broadcasted on Eurosport, they broadcasted a condolance message, and I was watching the European Weighlifting Championships and there the Polish weightlifters were wearing black ribbons.

This is a sad day for Poland, you and your country have my condolence. The irony is that the president and his staff were going to visit Katyn forest where thousands of polish military personnel and civil people were massacred by Russian army during WW2.

What a tragedy for the whole country! It is also sad that my local newspaper didn't say a word about this, but plenty about baseball, tiger woods and tina fey. Very sad.

Or that last night on the BBC, Poland openly chastized Russia for commencing production of the Nord Stream pipeline that would completely by-pass Poland in bringing natural gas to Germany, depriving it of billions of dollars in transit fees and ...

The Polish Foreign Minister called it the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pipeline .

A really sad day for our country.

Among those who were killed were:
President,
Operational Commander of Armed Forces
Commander of Air Forces
Commander of Land Forces
Commander of Special Forces
Commander of Navy.

And BTW - number of 132 victims is incorrect. Aboard plane were 88 passengers + 8 crewmen.

So basically, the entire Polish country and military is without a commander. Did they put too many eggs in one basket or what?

Very sad day for the great nation of Poland. North East Scotland has had a rich and long-lasting Polish community dating back to the Second World War when some of the Polish men-at-arms were billeted in the area and settled down here after the war.
However, V22 does make a very valid point. Why were most of the military and civilian establishment travelling on one aircraft at the same time?

So many top officials? Sounds like a horrible accident. A sad day for the people of Poland.

Apparently the plane also carried the families of katyn massacre victims:

V22 Osprey, teddy, probably they are going to look people responsible for after the mourning will end.
We have got similar accident two years ago when several top high air commanders where traveling one plane and it crashed, it looks like nobody take a lesson.
Discussion about buying new airfleet for government has been lasting for many years (at least since governmental chopper crashed in 2003), but they were afraid that all tabloids will wrote that government is wasting money for luxuries. Every time when prime minister and president flow to the same place with different planes, we have seen headers: "20000 PLN wasted"*

*1 PLN = 0,35 USD
