Even if wanted some 3D CW game, I wouldn't buy this because I refuse to even give these guys an extra inch down this DRM path.  There are also some questionable ethics problems that went on behind the scenes, which adds a lot of irony to the whole DRM that was tacked on.

Just to add a response to a post above, DRM such as this is _not_ necessary in order to sell wargames. Niche games like hard core strategy/war games do very well without restrictive DRM and I'm not particularly sympathetic to those that employ them. With that said, this is a decision each developer and publisher has to make and I do understand why some go this route, though I believe they are misinformed and end up costing themselves more sales than they might gain in this market. It's also a decision for each customer to make, whether they are willing to accept DRM on their games or not.

I do agree that the title of this thread is somewhat misleading in that the DRM on this game is still in place and the timeframe of when it might be removed is extremely vague.

I've also heard that the game itself is good, so kudos to the devs on that, though I don't know when I'll have time to try it out myself.

At the risk of sounding lick a suck up, Hear hear! I really like the looks of this game. I'm new to the DRM discussion, but I'm slowly but surely coming to the conclusion I don't want DRM.

How does a protection scheme (of any kind) ensure that?

You are right. It can't.

But it can reduce the amount of revenue lost from non-technical pirates.

In the end, this type of argument is academic because there is no way to accurately count how much money is actually lost by pirates.

The argument is flawed from the beginning.

How will they make more sales from people who don't purchase software? It's laughable.

You may have missed the operational part of his statement... "non-technical piracy."

I guess everyone to their own, but it baffles how people paying for product once consider it a rental. Yes maybe not the ideal way to purchase a game, but certainly not rental as to rent something one pay the service on a regular basis. The game hasn't got limited installs, and need to be connected to the internet to play.

I should elaborate. I only gave part of my reason for not purchasing and I think E spelled out the reason for calling it rental very well.
I won't buy it because any DRM on my system is an extra program I don't want.
I don't want the hole in the operating system this can potentially create (hi Sony).
I don't want the system issues that do happen (e.g. Slow system, remove Starforce, fast system)
I don't want to go cap in hand when something goes wrong.
I don't want to be told "go talk to company X if you have an issue with DRM" when I can't play the game.

I want to be treated like a valued customer.

DRM protects sales? I own (see that word "own", that means I can install them anytime I like) over 40 games, NONE have DRM (I don't include Serial number only as DRM).

I don't miss the games I have decided to ignore and it doesn't make me stupid, it means I have made a decision to stand up for what I believe in.

Notice I am only refering to myself. Because my views are not the truth, just my views and what I am happy with.

X3: Terran Conflict. They took the DRM off recently. Good, because I bought it, didn't pirate it, just waited until they made that decision. If they hadn't taken it off, then soon forgotten.

So when the rental agreement is torn up on this game, I'll probably buy it, I can wait.

EDIT:
I should point out, I do own games on Steam (very old) except for one I tried to buy recently (see another thread). All my Steam games only had Steam DRM, no other. For some reason I didn't have a problem with that, until recently. I won't buy any more games on Steam but I am wondering about the account. Is the Steam program a risk to my system (never had an issue with it)?

So, did we get a verdict on this or not?

Inquiring minds (and potential buyers) want to know.

what's wrong with this title?

There was no mention of time frame.

Well, the thread title...

quote:

Gettysburg DRM to go bye bye!

Appears to be at odds with the stated intent of the developer/publisher:

quote:

"I fully expect to remove the drm stuff at some point. I like to do that once we're done with it ourselves."

But don't take my word for it:

quote:

I do agree that the title of this thread is somewhat misleading in that the DRM on this game is still in place and the timeframe of when it might be removed is extremely vague.

What Erik alludes to may have escaped you, but it didn't elude the rest of us.

Is the DRM going to be removed or not?

Good grief. I really don't think Slick meant anything misleading when he started this thread. Was it perhaps a poorly worded title? Sure. That doesn't mean we need to slap on the tinfoil caps and start coming up with ridiculous conspiracy theories for "Why did he do it?!" He did it because he likes the game, and wanted to share the words of the developer...nothing more, nothing less.

I am but a humble forum member subject to the vagaries of that which is posted.

Can our readers assume that you've got a cozier relationship with the developer than the rest of us?

Hey, its his reputation that's at stake. If he misrepresented the developers position on removing the DRM, then he should retract his statement(s) regarding the latter's intent.

and I think that's where the problem lies.

If so, when?

If not, why was this announcement posted to this forum?

Get over yourself. Seriously.

I don't know why you seem to have convinced yourself that the OP had some sinister ulterior motive, but apparently that's exactly what you believe. I think most rational people think he just wanted to talk about the game. Again, poor choice of thread title? Yep, I'd agree with that. Are you honestly paranoid enough to be seeing more than that?

Sylvia Brown has made quite a good living from being EXTREMELY VAGUE.  Maybe Norb can too.

But to be quite frank, I wouldn't trust either of them more than I would the Israel government.

I dunno.

Fellas can go stomping all over the Internet dropping little poo-bombs.

If no one calls them out, then that's just the way it is, now isn't it?

Occasionally, IMHO, a "moment of clarity" can prove useful.

Please show some respect for our readers.

There are some bat-out-of-hell-great games that are being published by Matrix Games, DRM free!

Our audience is not nearly so dim-witted as you appear to presume.

Nothing personal.

But, I'm absolutely certain that our readers will want to be apprised of the status of this DRM removal, yes/no, and when.

Because of the way that this has played out, I'm, likewise, certain that anything less will be perceived as some sort of obfuscation on the part of the developer/publisher.
