And it wasn´t the enemy BBs that were the real threat but once more the difference between IJN torpedoeing over USN torpedoeing... as it has always been in WITP and it´s no different in AE, the IJN DDs are a major threat, while USN DD crews must have all been idiots... the IJN DDs scored 3 torp hits on our BBs at ranges around 5000 yards and this of course made the Japanese day already... many hits on our BBs were 25mm AA hits from the enemy BBs but both Yamato and Ise also scored main gun hits on our BBs but mostly detonating in the superstructure. When looking at my ships, superstructure hits are not worth it it seems as they hardly cause sys damage... shouldn´t superstructure hits cause a lot of sys damage? Anyway, Ise was hit by three penetrating 14 inch shells causing some damage, Yamato took two penetrating hits and another non penetrating tower armor hit. About the same number of main gun hits was scored on our BBs, but as mentioned above, not the gun hits are the problem, but the torpedo hits. The IJN DDs proved to be far superior also in exchanging gun fire, I would rate an IJN DD at least being twice as effective as an USN one. The engagement took a hell a long time but when it was over, I hoped to see my BBs being still in "ok" shape... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack near Truk at 111,109 Japanese Ships PB Sento Maru xAKL Ujigawa Maru Allied Ships SS Spearfish SS Spearfish launches 4 torpedoes at PB Sento Maru Spearfish diving deep .... this was frustrating to see then... why the IJN stayed until the day is beyond me, either by accident, deliberetely or due to a borked routine, I got no clue... seems like the enemy TF wasn´t set to "patrol do not retire" because after this engagement the enemy DID retire... these were the remaining combat ready ships from our SC TF that has been hit hard during the night and it´s not surprising that during the day, our now cruiser TF is shot to pieces. Not without hitting OI hard and also taking out a DD. We pay a heavy price in losing CL Helena unfortunetely, instead of keeping distance trying to run, our TF closed the range but NOT launching a single torp though (this would be the only reason IMO to close the range). Helena was sunk by Yamato´s main gun fire. Before going down, Helena scored 6 inch hits on Ise (non penetrating of course) and Ise is now rated as heavily damaged. Ise also shows up in the sunk ship list, but I doubt that she went down right after this engagement. After three 14 inch hits and a torp from the PTs, there could be a slight chance to see the ship sinking though as it´s quite a distance back to a bigger port in Japan. We got several messages of floatation increasing on Tennesse and the ship was lost during the replay, I had no chance to disband the ship at Adak, a level 8 port with lots of naval support. So in fact, the battlewaggon was sunk by the enemy DDs, Yamato and Ise only kind of "supported" the destroyers. If Ise will stay afloat then this round goes to the Japanese, unlike last time when we sunk Hyuga for the loss of Maryland IIRC. What I don´t understand though is why Rainer is doing those raids as they´re obvioulsy quite dangerous for him too. Every BB can sink an enemy BB during the night due to the short combat range so Yamato isn´t really superior to the old USN BBs, "only" the high night experience is helping the IJN but when looking at this and the last BB engagement, then we exchange main gun hits on an equal basis. Only the DDs made a difference this turn. If our ships aren´t sunk outright then we´ve got the advantage of having Adak´s level 8 port for emergency repairs, while the enemy has to move back to Japan. For major flt damage this doesn´t help us because without a shipyard not one point of major flt damage is repaired and this could mean that a ship is stuck in this port FOREVER. Or at least until 44 when I could move an ARD up there. But I guess by then KB would have long come for a visit to sink the BB in port. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Magwe , at 57,47 Weather in hex: Thunderstorms Raid detected at 43 NM, estimated altitude 39,000 feet.
