My game seems to have developed another problem sigh.. when im saving the game some times the galaxy spinning thingy stutters and stops then i get the following error message poping up.

Distant worlds could not save this game.

Error:

Then loads of out of memory exception and system.runtime.sterilization error lines

and i also get the following .net framework error box coming up. I have uninstalled and re installed .net software and that hans helped, any ideas?

See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

ok sorry for the double post, but this is getting worse it started out as the odd crash here and there but now its almost every time i try an auto or manual save, and ive now started getting that white screen with a red cross thing, could it be that its because im running 64bit and its a 32 bit app? and i keep getting out of memory errors and i doubt that considering i have 12 gig.

Its almost like the program itself is degrading slowly.

Hi erik, im running 1.0.3.0 atm, ive only just got it working from having problems with my triple head setup and to start with it was working great but over the last week its slowly became more unstable. ive tryed stuff like re installing .net, full driver re install, disableing sli, runing in all the compatability modes, runing as admin (even though my account is admin) and changeing memory buffer sizes ect, the only thing that i think it can be in a memory leak, but im not an expert so im prolly wrong.

oh i dont know if this is important but each time i have the crash to menu i check task manager and dw is using over a gig of memory dont remember it geting that high normaly.

cheers..

Hi Bestor

What size galaxy are you trying to save there? (how many stars, empires, etc) Is the error message you're seeing always that same one? ("Not enough storage is available to process this command")

I've put some further improvements into the final version of 1.0.4 that might help you with this situation too.

With 12 gig of RAM, it's unlikely to be your temp files, but you could try cleaning out your Windows temp folders (as described below), and also close any other apps that are running.

Thanks Elliot

quote:

Boot Windows into safe mode (F8 key) and do the following:

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders: c:\temp c:\windows\temp c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

The path to your temp folder will change depending on username and operating system.

Empty: c:\windows\prefetch

Do NOT try to delete the contents of the Windows folder, delete ONLY the contents of the prefetch folder

Go to Control Panel. Open Internet Options, Temporary Internet Files {Settings Button}, View Objects, Downloaded Program Files. A Windows Explorer window will open. Unwanted plugins can be removed by right clicking on the object, and selecting 'remove'.

Go to the Programs Tab then click on Manage Add-Ons. Examine the list of 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer' and disable anything that you do not want Internet Explorer to use. If you wish, the add-ons can be re-enabled at a later time.

Finally, Reboot your system.

Hey elliot thanks for the quick responses, ive tryed will 1000 and 1400 star galaxies with max races and with only 5 races, i get the same issue, also just cleared out all the files you posted, but managed to re create the issue first time, its always not enough memory error. or the random .net windows i get here and there are always sating not enough memory to process.

the only thing i didnt mention is that my cpu is overclocked to 4.1ghz could this cause any issues?

I might be completely offbase by asking this but... how much free HDD space do you have? large saves are over 100MB each.

I happen to have a stack trace from an OutOfMemoryException during a save of a 1.0.3. game, here it is:

Saving such a huge thing through XML might bear certain risks and is, as we see with the time saving takes, quite inefficient. Although it is probably a bit late to turn over the whole concept.

The greater part of the savegame had been already written when the exception was thrown. At 49 MB it fell just one or two megabytes short of the last successful save.

Edit: About my ominous 'certain risks' remark: there is just guesswork on my side, no real experience or knowledge. The fact that there is a Rehash() function at the root of it might hint at this actually being an instance of what I pointed at in my post here, that it is a dynamically expanding array that gets too large during an internal operation in the framework library. This is complete speculation though. I do not know enough about how the XML serializers work, and whether there are real risks with huge object trees. I tried some googling and found nothing specific to point to.

But given that the latest savefiles for my 1000 star galaxy are around 50 MB and how well XML compresses typically, the amount of data going in there must be gigantic.
