Gents, I have a real quandary that needs quick and expert opinion. Even as you read this I am working on my turn, so if you have any knowledge on the issue, please reply quickly. An Allied invasion of Samarinda, a base just north of Balikpan, is underway. The base is held by a very small Japanese land unit that has no combat troops. We are playing two-day turns. Two TFs with combat ships are heading to Samarinda from Manado (to the north). A third TF with engineers is heading to the beach from Makassar (to the south). I thought all three TFs would arrive on the second day of the two-day turn, but apparently only the south transports carrying engineers made it. This TF, which is a transport (not an amphibious) TF made up of xAK and xAP, made it to the beach and landed most of a base force and EAB. So far so good. (Yes, it's weird to use a transport TF in an invasion, but I added them at the last moment when I realized the base was essentially undefended; they were originally heading to an Allied port). The two amphibious TFs from the north didn't make it to the beach. They are one hex away at a non-base island hex that "guards" the approach to Samarinda. See the attached map for the message for both TFs indicating that they can't unload. I'll also attach a map showing Samarinda and approaches to following post. What I DON"T know is whether that message means they can't unload at the offshore island hex (that's fine, because I don't want to) or at Samarinda (that would be very bad). So: (1) can amphibious ships target Samarinda and, if so, is there any limit on size (I've broken off some LSTs to see if they can make it without that message, but they get the same message); or (2) is Samarinda off limits (if so, how in the world did my transports make it to the beach?)
