Even with two torpedoes in her side, the tough 14,000 ton liner would not go down and I-18 was forced to put two more fish into her. This did the trick.

As you can see, most of my sub patrol line is in place. Sigint is picking up radio traffic at Los Angeles that could indicate a convoy forming. We did have a minor skirmish along the line but the torpedoes and depth charges all missed.

On the land front, I captured Hong Kong, Jesselton, Alor Star, and Beaufort.

On Luzon, my second wave of forces continue to land at Aparri. I intend to get a considerable force ashore there and then advance southwards. My forces at Legaspi and Naga will be used primarily to support parachute units that will be capturing the smaller islands.

Traskott continued to strike Singkawang with flying fortresses this turn. He is determined to destroy the runway before I can put it to use. Luckily I have no aircraft based there, so he just dug foxholes for my ground troops.

In other news, I captured Dagua and Tsiaotso (China). We also landed at Busuanga, Kudat, and Sambas.

Here are the aircraft losses for the turn:

Next turn, I plan to trap the AVG if he leaves them at Wenchow.

In home waters, I have spotted a submarine in the shipping approaches to Yokohama several times over the last few days. Since he is being sloppy about not moving it after I spotted the sub, I shall go sub hunting.

At Tokyo, I have prepared a bait TF consisting of two small freighters loaded with cellulose (ping pong balls) and escorted by several of my SCs, which have ASW ratings of 8. This TF will sail to the hex where the sub was last sighted and hopefully entice it into attacking the freighters. When it does, my SCs will be all over the sub.

In case the sub doesn't take the bait, I also have 3 ASW TF, also consisting of 4 SC each that will be searching the hex. If he doesn't move, things will be pretty rough for him next turn.

Here is a closer look at the bait TF. Note the ASW rating of 48.

Turn 14 20 December, 1941

The ASW task forces and the bait TF arrived in the hex with the sub but evidently did not have enough op points to do anything. We will sit in the hex and see what turns up next turn.

This turn, all of the activity came from my subs striking enemy shipping.

Submarine attack near Toboali at 51,93

Japanese Ships
SS I-155

Allied Ships
xAKL Ipoh, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

xAKL Ipoh is sighted by SS I-155
SS I-155 launches 8 torpedoes at xAKL Ipoh

No doubt that the freighter went down as she was not large enough to handle two hits.

Last turn my sigint mentioned heavy radio traffic in hex 200,99 and even placed a convoy icon in that hex.

I have looked at the likely paths for the convoy and it looks like it is a convoy from Pearl Harbor to the west coast, most likely San Francisco. I am adjusting my sub picket lines to set up an interception at sea. It would be nice if I could bag a battleship or two before he can get them safely into dock.

I am also ordering a sub to the mouth of Sydney harbor to see what turns up there.

During the turn, I landed at Sandakan and Sibuyuan. I captured Sambas, Busanga, Kudat, and Sibuyan.

My fighters swept Wenchow but the AVG did not intercept although they still appear to be based in the city. Next turn I will return with several bombers.

Traskott's B-17s hit Kuching this turn where he discovered that I have moved some Oscars to provide air cover.

Excellent work thus far.

I have noticed one thing, during your sweeps you're often at a much lower altitude than the enemy aircraft, yet you still manage to inflict losses without even getting damaged.

Would you attribute this to the early pathetic skill and experience of the Allied fighter jocks when compared to your own pilots, or do you think having your aircraft in a better maneuver band is actually helping you?

Several things are helping. Pilot quality is always very important, but I have been setting my altitude so that I was near the break point of the maneuver band. That way, if the CAP bounced from above, he would be at one worse maneuver band than my planes. No idea whether or not this matters when combat is resolved but it seems to help.

I started the war with higher altitude sweep settings (but not extreme altitudes as I detest the "who can fly higher" competition) like the Japanese did in their early strikes. I then started varying altitudes to be less predictable, and lately have been flying more low maneuver band sweeps. By coming in low I can suck in more fighters scrambling from the ground as they do not spend as much time climbing. That means that they engage where I can shoot them down.
