...and some beautiful new light sconces too.

So how goes the defence of New Scotland against the barbarians, you ask?

Not so bad today. Case ,Downes, Clark and Stuart stage a succesful raid of New Ullapool anchorage, finding and sinking two Marus, one by gunfire and the other by torpedo. In poorly coordinated sweeps over New Ullapool, P-40E's, P-39's and P-400's destroy 6 Zeroes while losing 5. There were 34 Zeroes in the air on CAP today. The number of planes does not seem to diminish no matter how many they lose but the pilots might be getting worse. The cruiser force that has come up from Sydney will try to make a night bombardment tonight or tomorrow night. I decided to send a second Marine Regt to New Perth (hereafter termed the Harian's Wall Line). That will leave just a Bn of Kiwis, some French and a Marine Def Bn and a Bn of Stuarts (the tank not the royal family) to guard New Edinburgh.

The Jap carriers are gone for 2 days in a row. If I can arrange nightly crusier bombardment runs to New Ullapool that should put a dent in the air cover there.

********Meeting of the Anglo-American Royal Society for Etymology & Subterfuge, Auckland NZ, March 7, 1943******

Chairman: Right...now as to the matter of the defensive line in New Cale...erf..I mean New Scotland. Ideas?

OSS Guy: How about Hadrian's New Wall?

MI-5 guy: I like the notion but Hadrian's wall was in England so it is not really consistent, is it?

OSS Guy: Wait, isn't Scotland part of England?

MI-5 guy: No, it is not. It is part of Great Britain.

OSS Guy: I thought you were British?

MI-5 guy: I am.

OSS Guy: Then you are Scottish too?

MI-5 guy: Oh, good Lord, no.

OSS Guy: You lost me.

MI-5 guy: I am scarcely surprised.

OSS Guy: "Scarcely surprised" <makes air quotes> Oooooh. Thank you professor. I bet you are a hit with the ladies., or do you bat both ways?

Chairman: Look you two. This is supposed to be a cooperative effort. There will be no more of that. How about the Antonine New Wall Line? Wasn't that in Scotland?

MI-5 guy: Indeed! Splendid idea. what say we use the local term, Gryme's dyke?

OSS Guy: "Gryme's dyke", HAHAHAHAHHA. Is that one of your old girlfirends?

Chairman: GENTLEMEN! Please. Very well, then, let's make it Gryme's New and Improved dyke. We need terms for the NE and SW ends of the line.

MI-5 guy: Ah, how about Firth of Forth for the NE terminus?

Chairman: First of the Forth, you say?

MI-5 guy: No, FIRTH of Forth.

Chairman: OK, got it, New Forth of the Fifth

MI-5 guy: No, no, it's FIRTH. It's a geographical term.

Chairman: Ah, so New Firth of the Ford, then?

MI-5 guy: No, no, no. FORTH! And there is no "the" either.

Chairman: Sure there is, one doesn't say "I am fourth son"

MI-5 guy: No, one doesn't but it isnt and cardinal number.

OSS Guy: I think you mean ordinal not cardinal, professor..............

There is also the matter of the logistical "tail". The Japs had to bring their own "comfort women". Apparently, the pongos and, certainly, the GI's were expected to find their own.

A centrally planned economy will inevitably be less dynamic than the free market.

Sign in today was ABUELA...which means grandmother in Spanish...no kidding. I still can't find out what "El Pugo" means. I will ask my Mayan housekeeper. She might know, but then she wont know the English equivalent. A fine lot of good that will do me, eh?

Looks like the entire 5th Div is now ashore at Lautem. This is seriously bad news for the pongo brigade there and for the "Yank" ground support types. The P-40E's flying escort there did coordinate well. At least 40 sorties of A-24's arrived over the landing beaches from Ambon. They managed to hit Ise once, but didn't dent the Sheffield steel. Time for the P-40's to get out.

March 8:

New Orkneys: The Japs invaded Pentacost Island (a useless chunk of rock in the New Orkneys). They are sanitizing the area to keep us from using them as PT boat or seaplane bases. I take this to mean they are serious about building up New Skye (Luganville.....shhhhh). The 17's at Nou..oh, crap..I mean New Edinburgh, will skip the airfield raids over New Ullapool and try to hit the 200 foot coconut palm dock at New Skye. A 4 DD group at New Edinburgh will try to catch the small Jap landing force at Pentacost while they are unloading. I sent an AVD to the unoccupied allied base SE of Efate (I cant remember which of the Orkneys that is...just don't say anything..OK?). It is buildable to a level 4 airfield. We need something there before New Edinburgh is surrounded. Quite probably, the Jap carriers will be back soon and they will be in a bad mood. Suva is vulnerable. A US Army Regt. is on its way.

New Scotland: A small naval bombardment group did no damage to the Japs on Gryme's New and Improved Dyke Line. Jap strength there is now 27,000 combat troops, including 50+ Ronson lighters with treads. 2nd Marine Regt. and a second bn. of Stuarts are on their way. Their departure from New Edinburgh will be back-filled with a Kiwi Bn. from Suva and a Mrine Raider Bn. All the medium bombers in New Scotland are concentrating on the Jap ground troops.
I flew in two squadrons of TBD's and a fresh SBD squadron. Anything trying to land at New Ullapool should regret it now. Finally the USN F4F squadrons are relieved. The USN/RAN crusier froce has arrived from Sydney and will bombard New Ullapool tonight.

I did some research and the best I can find is that Pugo is a surname (there's at least one comedian by the name), but could also refer to a municipality in the Philippines or quail egg soup.

Bloody Hell....You are right.....that is supposed to be the New and Improved New Hebrides not the New Orkneys.

Anyway, funny thing happened in the 'hood yesterday.

My neighbor up the street is a short, chubby Indian guy (not Native American a real Indian). My Lazyboy psychological evaluation suggests he has some insecurities. How do I know this? I don't really but it is fun to speculate. Back when my other neighbor (the weightlifter guy) was married to the hot Pocahontas type with the new bolt-ons, he (the weightlifter guy) was approached by the Indian guy (the short one). It seems he was intrigued by the weightlifter guy's 911 S Turbo. I can't say I blame him (the short guy). It is an awesome machine (the Porsche not the short guy).

So anyway, the short guy asks the weightlifter guy if he can buy his 911. The weightlifter guy, who happens to own a couple of RV dealerships and always...well at least he used to before Pocahontas kicked him out of the house...where was I...oh yeah...he always had some incredible car in his driveway with a paper dealer decal on the window. This time he can't make the deal but he says he has some more expensive cars if the short Indian guy is interested. "More expensive, sure", says the short Indian guy.

Et voila...he comes home in some outrageous silver Lomborghini with a big wing on the back and about 3 inches of ground clearance. He gives his one year old tricked-out Range Rover with custom wheels to his wife and he starts driving the Lamorghini. Did I mention his wife is super hot and is about 6 inches taller than the short Indian guy. She is Indian too, the real kind and is waaay hotter than Pocahontas. How is this germane, you ask? Well, it goes to the pattern of making a public statement in his "possesions". Did I mention she waved at me once from her Range Rover? I'm not sure if it was simply neighborly, or if she liked me or if she felt sorrry for almost running me over while I was walking the dogs. I was a little distracted as I had a dog who had just eaten a bottle of Maalox.

Anyway, back to the story. So the short Indian guy starts driving his Lambo and he likes to blip the throttle while the clutch is unengaged to draw attention to himself. The problem is, this is not the only thing he does to draw attention to himself. He lives at the top of this steep 3-way communal driveway that has a sharp junction with the street (right by the new "fire lane") and every time he comes down the driveway the Lambo bottoms out and there is a loud metal grinding sound. I think is probably the metal cover over the oil pan but it might be something worse. So this goes on for about three weeks. Every time I hear it I can just imagine some horrendous repair bill. I dont really know how much a Lomborghini oil pan costs but if you need to ask....

Yesterday, I am out walking the dogs on the street again and I perceive a vehicle approaching from behind. It is so quiet I can only hear the tire sounds on the road. I get the dogs out of the way and a brand new monstrous white Rolls motors buy with white dealer decals. It is the short Indian guy driving and he did NOT bottom out his vehicle coming down the driveway.

He passes me, stops at the corner with the new right turn only sign , gets out and hangs a blue helium baloon on the street sign. he waves, gets back in, hangs a U and drives back up the driveway. Shortly afterward, the guest begin arriving for his son's birthday party. The valets have to run extra far because of the new "fire lane noparking " areas.

Indeed! I am thinking about asking the Dept of the Navy to leave those useless wooden decks off the Essex class and stick some 8 inch guns on them. I have your agreement then?

The Japs are breeding like cockroaches in the tropics. There are 33,000 combat troops on the Gryme's New Dyke Line. The stakes just keep getting higher.

Here are the opposing forces:

IJA and IJN:
8th Engineer Regiment
8th Recon Regiment
4th Division
17th Infantry Regiment
Maizuru 1st SNLF
144th Infantry Regiment
61st Naval Guard Unit
8th Mountain Gun Regiment

Defending units:
34th Infantry Regiment
193rd Tank Battalion
754th Tank Battalion
161st Infantry Regiment
8th Marine Regiment
147th Field Artillery Regiment
148th Field Artillery Battalion

That is close to 2 full Japanese division equivalents vs one US division equivalent with 2 Bn of armor. I dont think that is enough yet for them to break through against level 2 fortifications. 2nd Marine Regt and some construction engineers should arrive tomorrow.

No fighters rose from New Ullapool to defend against a fighter sweep. I think that means the airfield is pretty well dinged up but it can be repaired quickly. I will keep the B-17's busy suppressing New Ullapool and shift some of the fighter-bombers at New Edinburgh to TacAir over the forward Jap combat forces.

Both Lord Admiral Sprior and I agree. Johnny Jap will be back with their carriers. They cant allow these surface raids on New Ullapool. They may just park offshore and provide air cover or they may try to shut down the airfield at New Edinburgh. If they do the latter they are going to encounter some serious CAP. Approx. operational fighter strength at New Edinburgh is now:

36 x P-40E
37 x P-39D
13 x P-400
5 x F4F

I just started landing another 40 P-39's at Samoa. That is two ferry hops away from Noumea when they are repaired. there are 9 F4F's at Suva that can reinforce as well.

Now that Manila has fallen, the Jap artillery has moved over to Bataan.

The Allies have about 21,000 tons of supply. I have about 25 P-40E operating at Bataan to keep the Japs from doing too much damage with air attacks. They are doomed too.

Here are the oppsoing forces:

Assaulting units:
16th Engineer Regiment
90th Infantry Regiment
47th Infantry Regiment
2nd Formosa Inf. Regiment
16th Recon Regiment
19th Ind. Engineer Regiment
Guards Mixed Brigade
65th Brigade
7th Tank Regiment
78th Infantry Regiment
48th Recon Regiment
1st Formosa Inf. Regiment
21st Ind. Engineer Regiment
48th Engineer Regiment
3rd Ind. Engineer Regiment
Sasebo 1st SNLF
48th Field Artillery Regiment
1st Hvy.Artillery Regiment
1st Medium Field Artillery Regiment
8th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
9th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
14th Army
2nd Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion

Defending units:
11th PA Infantry Division
45th PS Infantry Regimental Combat Team
21st PA Infantry Division
Manila Bay Defenses
31st Infantry Regiment
31st PA Infantry Division
91st PA Infantry Division
57th PS Infantry Regimental Combat Team
26th PS Cavalry Regiment
14th PS Engineer Regiment
4th Marine Regiment
194th Tank Battalion

The Rolls Royce body style designers have been in cryogenic animation for 35 years. Probably the Queen likes it that way.

When my neighbor sees his first Bentley he will trade in the ugly-ass-land-yacht Rolls. I don't know what he does for a living but he seriously needs some ADD medicine.

Looks like a lot of TARP funds and Stimulus bucks have filtered down to you neighbors, Cap!

Does the Rolls have a "Fannie Mae" or "AIG" license plate holder?

You sure have me confused. Your intelligence renaming scheme seems to be working

Bloody Hell....You are right.....that is supposed to be the New and Improved New Hebrides not the New Orkneys.

Anyway, funny thing happened in the 'hood yesterday.

So he drove a block in his Rolls to put up the balloon?

This reminds me of something that I saw when visiting my old college roommate a few years ago. On Monday morning we walked his kids the half mile to their school and after watching them go inside he told me he had something for me to see. As we walked away from the school the garage door of the house two doors down from the school opens and the lady backs out, drives her kid to the school, lets him out and then returns home. Ahhhh... this is America!!!!

Indeed! I am thinking about asking the Dept of the Navy to leave those useless wooden decks off the Essex class and stick some 8 inch guns on them. I have your agreement then?

Yep, we're going to chuck all the chockheads off our carriers and put extra 6in guns and torpdog tubes on them. All that ex-hangar space means we can carry a shed load more ammo.

I would have thought that ammo would be a secondary consideration for that extra space. Wouldn't this be an excellent place for rum storage instead?
