Ed stares at the report before calling for an orderly to take it and send it on it's way. He notices that the orderly is female and he asks her where the usual person is.

“Sir, the men are being sent to front line positions and we gals are filling in for them wherever possible.” She takes the report, salutes and crisply does an about face and leaves the office.

Ed knows that the US military is expanding at a rapid pace and that there is a shortage of men to man the new ships and units being created along with the demands of replacing those lost in combat. The initial tidal wave of volunteers saw many men turned away as there was no way to take everyone at once and now a steady flow of new men will keep the US war machine running. Women around the Pentagon will take some getting used to though.

The day's report read as follows:

1.8K troops are at Gumma
21 A Flot is at Singapore
Hoyo Fortress is at Osumi
Chinhae Bay Fortress is at Pusan
2 ER is at Homan
10 MortB is at Chiamussu
7K troops are at Toyohara
35.8K troops are at Changchun

Recon flights have revealed that:

Lunga hosts 8 fighter, 9 bombers, 25 aux, 11 LCUs 9040/68/0
There are 2 LCUs at Makin Island
Mandalay is reported to have 86 fighters, 130 aux, 12 LCUs 34080/252/156

The Soviets reported the following:

Fushan 1 LCU 1880/9/0
Tsitsihar 7 LCUs 32160/353/20
Heiho 8 LCUs 45660/572/26
Mishan 4 LCUs 0/4/95

It's been a quiet day in the Pacific war with the only action being seen in China as air raids continue on a daily basis raining their death on the hapless Chinese troops.

The ambulance carrying Pete and some other wounded men is making good time despite the horrible road conditions and it's being choked with army formations headed in the opposite direction. They stop at a field hospital where a doctor gives the men a quick examination. He then dispenses orders for medicine to be given to those who need it and sends the ambulance on it's way. Pete is feverish and despite the IV and the injections of penicillin his condition is deteriorating. The two men assigned to the ambulance have noticed this, but figure that a doctor knows what he's doing.

Dave and Bill enjoy a cold beer while Dave cleans the fish that they have caught today. Bill thinks that when he's finished with his naval career this place would be a wonderful one to live at. It would be even better if Sandy were here, he thinks.

The Pirates have been offered new assignments within the OSS and they have agreed to accept. They are to get a 30 day leave before being shipped to England where they will operate aircraft for the various missions the OSS undertakes. Will calls Ed's office and arranges to meet with him tomorrow for lunch, just to touch base. Jim and Ben will take their allotted time to go and visit their families before reporting to New York for transport to England.

Stalin confers with his staff and demands that more Japanese bases be kept under a watchful eye.

“Comrade Stalin,” says a wary general, “ We are doing all that we can with the available planes. We are limited by the weather and the range of the planes. Perhaps if we were allowed to use more bombers for recon purposes some more Japanese positions would then fall under our eyes. The thing that we really could use are American recon planes with their great range. Is it not possible to get some of these from them?”

Stalin motions for an aide and whispers in his ear and then the aide leaves the room. He then turns to the general and says, “We will try to demand these planes that you ask for, but know that our fight is with the Germans now and until we kill them all your forces, though important to the Rodina, are our stepchildren when it come to military supplies and men. You will continue to do the best that you can with what you have.”

Stalin's generals are learning that success, not angering him and making requests to facilitate the war effort will not bring his wrath down on them, though they are still frightened of his legendary temper.

Recon of Myitkyina revealed 3 LCUs 4400/45/0

The German 17th Army has had it's advance to Suchumi bog down.

Today, under heavy pressure from the US, Brazil declared war on the Axis.

S-28 was caught on the surface 190 miles SW of Gili Gili and attacked by a Nell, but suffered no damage.

MSW ops continued at Trimcomalee

Tautog docked at Pearl Harbor and most of the crew was granted liberty.

An old friend, the AS Fulton, is in a convoy nearing Suva.

DD Laffey's TF reached Anchorage and the ships immediately refueled and replenished their stores.

Bill has a brake shoe in his hand waiting for Dave to tell him where to put it. He's lost in thought about the usual things that haunt him: Sandy and the war.

Gunny has been working his platoon of Marines hard as he knows that combat lies in their future and the only way a Marine can be readied for it is through hard work. His riflemen, as all Marines are, are decent with their weapons and they no longer groan about their physical training. Gunny has told his LT that the men are as ready as they'll ever be and that what they need now is a weekend to blow off steam. The LT is as green as they come, but he's been told to listen and learn from Gunny and he's been doing just that. Gunny doesn't know what to make of his CO yet and has decided that until they are in combat he won't know what he's made of.

Red still has no idea where Gunny is. Cookie and Red have agreed to purchase oceanfront property not far from Lahaina on the island of Maui. The lawyers from both parties will meet and draw up the formal papers and then it'll just be a check from the bank to seal the deal. It looks as if the two are off and running in their business venture. They've decided to rename it Lucky Enterprises and the lawyer will register the name for them.

The ambulance carrying Pete had a flat tire today and the trek to Townsville resumed once they managed to get a spare from another vehicle as their spare was flat. After driving a few hours the motor started making a “funny noise” said the driver and not long after that they broke down. There are many vehicles passing them, but almost all of them are heading towards Darwin, not Townsville. Finally a small convoy of ambulances arrives and stops. The men are loaded wherever they can be squeezed and the convoy is off again, Pete included. It's a very uncomfortable journey that seems like it'll never end.

I was worrying about that VP point spread and the attending ratio translating into an auto victory, but as many other AARs point out things can change.  As bases build up so do their VP values.

I don't want to get any further into it as the AAR goes on lagging about 2 months behind the war.

I will say that I find myself putting more time and effort into the AAR I do the game itself.

One thing you should do if you have not already is expand every base in the ContUS and Canada to their max. That will give you some valuable points. Same could probably be said for India as SJ's investment in Oz probably means he isn't going there.

If I didn't know better I'd say that the Japanese (SJ) are content with the standoff in the India/Burma area.  Without the IJN denuding the Pacific and leaving it to the mercy of the USN an amphib op is very risky with the RN lurking.

I do expect a Japanese move into the Aleutians after the winter ends.  IF an attack come during the winter I believe it'll be a major blunder on SJ's part.  I doubt that a major effort can be blunted, but it'll be costly and run out of steam quickly as the defenders are digging deeply and assets are in place for a fight.

Oz is and will be a bloody affair and one that I hope will be the beginning of the end for the Empire of the Sun.  This is where the war of attrition begins and a freed Darwin will become a springboard for future ops.  I think that Japanese ambitions end with the 4 bases that they've taken and intend to use everything they can to delay the Allied offensive that will surely come.

I keep trying to find a weak spot in the island defenses as all I need is a crack for the dam to break.  So far short of a very major and bloody op I don't see one.  As the Allied strength grows what looks prohibitive today might become inviting tomorrow.

I'll post the next episode of the saga later today as real life issues must get priority.

August 23, 1942 The Pentagon

Ed sits in his office sharing a drink with Bill Donovan. His feet are up on his desk and he relaxes as his guest reads the latest intel reports.

1.8K troops are at Pagan
Iki Fortress is at Ikitsuki
101 IJNAF BF is at Wotje
31 HAAB is at Aomori
84.7K troops are at Kiungahan
4 AAR is at Toyoma

Makin 2 LCUs 880/11/0
Myitkyina 4 LCUs 26400/295/12

“Well there's no surprises in this,” says Donovan. “We need to know the Japanese intentions so that we can surprise them for a change. The Soviets are between a rock and a hard place with the Germans rolling the Red Army back with those hammer blows while the Japanese keep a strong force facing them. Lucky for us that the Japanese are so heavily involved watching the Soviets, fighting the Chinese and facing the Commonwealth forces in the India/Burma area. Our generals moan about the Japanese strength in Australia, but it's nothing compared to what it could be. We've got to keep the Soviets in the war and the Chinese fighting, despite the corruption. Did you know that today Hitler ordered his forces to take Leningrad? Tomorrow our pal Stalin will issue orders that Stalingrad be held at all costs. He's going to put Marshal Zhukov in command there. See what a little inside intel can get?” Donovan smiles and gives Ed a wink.

Ed nods his agreement and the two continue to talk touching on many topics, some not related to the war.

Aboard the submarine Plunger another crew is cursing their torpedoes. They attacked a convoy 72 miles NW of Darwin and either missed, not likely, or suffered more duds.

Gunny heads into Honolulu for a diversion with his squad leaders in tow. He knows that these are the men upon whom the platoon will rely and this time to blow off steam together is as important as any drill ever conceived.

Bill spends another lazy day with Dave. After Dave installed some parts in another vehicle the person left and they had lunch. A little while after eating they went for a hike and chatted along the way. They talked about the war and what they wanted to do after it. Bill said that he's a career Navy man, but on retirement a place like this would be a wonderful way to enjoy life.

Red and Cookie went to the bank to sign some papers after the Palawan's master told them to return tonight as something might be in the wind for their ship. What the two didn't know was that they were a scant 2 blocks away from where Gunny was when they stopped to grab a bite to eat.

The convoy of ambulances stops upon reaching a field hospital and the wounded men that can walk are given a chance to stretch their legs and get some hot food. Those who can't get chow for themselves are attended to and teams of doctors work their way among the wounded.

“Get this man out of this vehicle immediately,” says a doctor upon giving Pete a quick looking over. “Get him into the hospital now. This man needs care now or he'll never make it to anywhere.”

Pete is moved into the hospital where another doctor examines him and silently curses under his breath, “Does anybody know what the hell they're doing?” He tells a nurse to get Pete ready for surgery immediately. Fifteen minutes later a team is ready and Pete is given anesthesia.

“Look at this,” says the doctor, “Given proper care when he originally got hurt he would've had a little scar from the flesh wound. From neglect he's been doomed to losing his forearm and now because of the spreading infection we have to take the entire arm to try and keep him alive.” As the team works on Pete the doctor mutters about the war and all of the broken bodies and shattered dreams that it's causing.

3 CavB is at Mishan
24K troops are at Kanazawa
2 AD is at Harbin
3.4K troops are at Hamamatsu
36 planes are at Mukden
3 AAR is at Tokyo
42 RCB is at Gili Gili
51 HAAB is at Singapore
248.7K troops are at Sasebo

The Japanese have landed at Waingapu

MSWs are busy conducting ops at Trimcomalee

“So that's it? Based on more of the same vague stuff that still leaves us in the dark we're supposed to run the war? I sure as hell hope that the Japanese don't get more concrete information than we do. Maybe we can start getting reliable information from our Soviet allies.” FDR is frustrated that things in the Pacific continue to go poorly and that it appears that it'll continue that way for a while yet. He continues the staff meeting and the various topics are gone through as there is a never ending stream of issues to resolve.

45 X Zero swept Cooktown and were engaged by 6 X P-40E, of which 3 were lost.

The Japanese conducted an air raid on Baker Island made up of 7 X Zero and 21 X Betty. 2 Bettys were observed to go down and it's believed that another 17 were damaged by the flak. The air strip suffered light damage. With only a squadron of PBYs based there the defense of the island relies on the flak alone.

Palawan has begun loading supplies that will be bound for who knows where. The crew, though busy with the loading process, are betting among themselves as to where they are destined to go this time. Cookie has overseen the replenishment of the ship's stocks of food and then takes Lucky for a walk. Red is working up a sweat in the hold manhandling cargo into place as directed by the 2nd mate.

Pete is still heavily sedated and continues to sleep. His condition is being monitored by the staff at the field hospital. They want to get him to a proper facility in Townsville as soon as they feel he's fit to travel.

Dave stands waving good bye as Bill drives off to the south, heading back to Mare Island. He wonders when he'll see Bill again and his thoughts run to Sandy and that the 2 of them would make a fine couple.

Gunny has a busy day ahead of him, possibly a few of them as the 2nd Marine Division is preparing to ship out. According to scuttlebutt the only thing delaying their departure is the lack of troop transports. Considering the number of ships at Pearl constantly arriving and departing a lack of them seems impossible, but there are many units awaiting transport to various places and the distances are great.

Judging from the sweep at Cooktown, the Japanese don't seem to have the same problem. Let's hope they can't support a Betty squadron at Darwin . . .

Is this regular WITP or a mod? CHS has places like Tennant Creek, Daly Waters and Katherine that can be used for bombing Darwin.

It's vanilla so I've got to do it the old fashioned way.  Kind of dumb as US engineers found an area and would turn it into what they needed rather quickly.

August 25, 1942 The Pentagon

Ed ponders the paper in front of him and wonders what, if any, value it has. He has serious doubts about his own contribution to the war effort. He's aware of the depression sweeping over him, but he can't seem to shake it off. He feels like going nowhere and doing nothing. His gaze shifts to the blank wall before him.

An orderly silently enters Ed's office, picks up the day's report and leaves without Ed even noticing her.

68 CB is at Hamatsu
Hensui CB is at Sasebo
44 HAAB is at Manila
4 Flt is at Port Moresby
1 AD is planning for Chungking
4.9K troops are at Kitakyushu
20 ER is at Wuchow
4.6K troops are at Hanoi
148.8K troops are at Sasebo
126 IJA BF is at Gili Gili
11 AAR is at Osaka
2 RAAR is at Tokyo

Waingapu has fallen to the Japanese

The MSW Rampur continued mine sweeping ops at Trimcomalee

Recon flights over:
Rangoon showed 65 fighters, 88 bombers, 169 aux, 14 LCUs 39440/475/9
Tarawa 3 LCUs 21340/87/0

The Pirates are in various locations in the US enjoying their leaves. Will has mentioned to Bill Donovan about his concern about Admiral Landy. He related the meeting the two men had and how Ed seemed listless. Since then Will has gone back to his old stomping grounds.

Bill Donovan has talked to Admiral Leahy about Ed and the two men agree to meet tomorrow for lunch. Donovan calls Ed's office and schedules Ed to join them for the meal.

Bill has had an uneventful drive southwards and decides to spend the night in a small town and continue his drive tomorrow, He enjoys a simple meal and a couple of beers before retiring for the night. Sleep eludes him for hours as he lies staring at the ceiling thinking of Sandy and the ship that he'll soon command. He wonders if he'll make a good skipper or not. He knows that he's had all the training for the job anybody could ever ask for and silently prays that he'll do good.

Pete has been slipping in and out of as he's being kept heavily sedated and medicated. So far things are looking good as the doctor thinks that the infection was contained when they amputated Pete's arm.

FDR has mentioned that once more the Soviets have failed to supply the promised intel and discusses this with General George C Marshall. Marshall then mentions that the Red Army's offensive on the Moscow front has pushed the Germans back. “You know I'd bet the farm on the Russians clobbering the Germans in the long run,” Marshall continues with, “They're getting stronger all of the time while the Germans seem to be a bit weaker. It's still an iffy thing there, but my gut tells me that the Germans are in for a rough time this coming winter.”

August 26, 1942 Washington DC

Admirals Leahy, Landy and General Bill Donovan are in Donovan's car on their way to lunch in Georgetown. Donovan is reading today's report.

1 D at Harbin
54 CB is at Wuchow
15 AAR is at Nagoya
1 RTR is at Kitakyushu
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
Yokosuka BF is at Tokyo
2.5K troops are at Kyoto
6 D is at Homan
Shanghai BF is at Shanghai
8 TR is at Kendari
Hoyo Fortress is at Osumi

Recon flights over Luang Prabang have revealed nothing is there.

The Japanese overflew Noumea in the morning and again in the afternoon so it must be assumed that they know about the large buildup there.

“OK Ed so other than wanting a deck under your feet what's the problem? Being bored is part of the job here in DC, but without your work a lot of lives would've been lost hitting well fortified Japanese positions that we can bypass. If you think you have it bad how about this little tidbit from unoccupied France. They arrested 7K Jews today. Now those people have something to be upset about, not you.” Donovan hands the paper back to Ed who looks at Bill and shrugs.

“You know that for the entire war to date the only thing that I've managed to do is influence Franklin a bit. I was born to fight a ship, not a desk and it is getting to me. I'm going to do all I can to get transferred out of the Pentagon and onto a ship even if I need to take a grade reduction.” Bill sits back and stares ahead.

“So you and almost every other officer in the Pentagon wants the same thing. I thought that you've already been promised sea duty. Why can't you just wait until you're cut loose for it? The job that you're doing is very important. OK, maybe these daily reports aren't such a big deal most of the time, but once in a while we get a little peek at something that's a help. You've given advice to the President and he's taken it, don't you think that's important? Oh hell Ed let's just get some food, have a couple of drinks and relax today.” Admiral Leahy looks at Donovan and then back at Ed and winks.

Ed smiles and says, “OK the two of you can relax as this old sailor can take a hint. It's not like I'm going to slit my own throat. I know we all have our bit to do, but I do long for a ship and I won't relax until I get one.”

Pete is slowly recovering from his ordeal and a nurse is telling him about the latest war news when the doctor arrives.

“So how do you feel? Your temperature is just a hair above normal and I think that we should be able to unplug you from these bottles tomorrow. You know that you're lucky to be alive.” The doctor pats him on his left shoulder and starts to leave saying, “I'll see you tomorrow.”

Pete mutters, “Yeah, real lucky to be alive. Tell me something doc, how am I supposed to pitch for the New York Yankees when the war is finally over? Do you know what it's like to only have one arm? Well I'm just beginning to and I have to say that I don't like it.”

“You and thousands of others are going to have to learn to live with what's happened to you in this war and I can't tell you how to do it. What I can tell you is that you don't have any choice as this is what's been dealt to you and now you've got to play it. I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. See you tomorrow.” The doctor leaves and the nurse excuses herself saying that she's got to check on the other patients.

“Unlucky at love and damned unlucky at war, that's me,” says Pete as he lays in the bed staring at the ceiling.

Bill has arrived at Mare Island and heads for the Officers Club for a beer and company.

MSWs are still busy at Trimcomalee.

The Dutch sub KXVIII was attacked by an IJN ASW TF about 220 miles SE of Kendari. The sub escapes without any damage and the crew are thankful for the Japanese being so poor as their jobs.

The submarine Trout completed laying her mines at Takamatsu and then tries to attack a Japanese ML, but she either missed or the fish were duds. Two DDs then locate and attack her, but though they are tenacious the Trout manages to give them the slip without having been damaged.

Rotten bedside manner. But if I were in Pete's position, I'd also be upset about losing Darwin. How's Operation Grinder coming along?

Field hospital docs have little time to worry about bedside manner and after the evacuation of Darwin there are plenty of wounded to worry about.

I think after discovering that you're light an arm that would be more important than the loss of a battle.  Missing body parts are not an easy thing to deal with, especially initially.

Operation Grinder is well named and it'll be heard from in the near future.

There's much truth in that -- but it depends on the person. The captain of the Monitor was blinded by a shell-burst during the famous battle against the CSS Virginia (AKA the Merrimac). When he came to in the hospital, his first question was about the Union ships he had been trying to protect. When assured that the ships were safe, and the Virginia had been driven away, he said, "Then I don't care what becomes of me."

The battered Australian troops continue to stream towards presumed safety, supplies and reinforcements. Darwin must be retaken, but it'll be a tough nut to crack without air support.

Pete is recovering quickly and the medical staff plans on sending him back to Townsville tomorrow. He is in a bad state of mind though. This whole episode of his life was an accident that turned into a nightmare. He still can't believe what transpired after he got to Darwin. He promises himself that in the future he'll avoid women as they have only caused him trouble in his life. Then another thought crosses his mind that what woman would want a one armed man?

4.6K troops are at Wakkanai
187K troops are at Saipan
Home Defense Force is at Tokyo
5 AAR is at Niigata
4 TR is at Port Moresby
187.7K troops are at Truk
24 AAR is at Nagasaki
4 NCB is at Darwin
21 MB is at Chungking
121 IJA BF is at Lashio

Ed hands the report to the orderly and she promptly leaves the office. Ed ponders the intel that has crossed his desk of late and he's convinced that the numbers of Japanese troops are greatly exaggerated. If they're accurate then the entire country must be under arms. He wonders what will be the outcome of the battle between the Navy and Army as they have very different ideas on how to go about conducting the war. The Army wants to bolster the forces in Australia and slug it out with the Japanese while the Navy wants to grab some forward island bases. In the meantime FDR wants a northern approach to Japan to be exploited, but that hinges on Soviet co operation.

The submarine Pike attacks an IJN TF 35 miles SE of Gili Gili, but misses or the torpedoes failed again. The warships counter with their own attack on her and after 3 hours of off and on attacks they finally move off leaving the Pike with moderate systems damage. She will make for Cairns for repairs.

The 2nd Marine Division has new orders and they are readying to drill on amphibious attacks. Gunny is pleased as this is what Marines are meant to do. Nobody knows of a particular target but the rumors cover the entire range of possible and impossible targets. This will keep Gunny busy and he'll have no time to try and contact Red in the foreseeable future.

The Chinese have managed to cut the supply lines to the Japanese troops in the Chungking area, but already the enemy has responded and there are reports of large Japanese formations converging on the Chinese troops.

Ed reviews his report before it begins it journey. He was pleased to see that the Soviets had supplied some information and he wonders if they will continue to do so on a regular basis. What kind of crazy world is this where allies don't trust each other and even worse don't work together against a common foe?

17 D is at Homan
144 IJA BF is at Tokyo
2 A is at Truk
3 IB is at Homan
2.5K troops are at Kyoto
6.2K troops are at Taipei
Amami Oshima Fortress is at Amami
6.9K troops are at Inch'on
65 CB is at Kagoshima
12 A is planning for Chungking
54 D is at Okayama
64 CB is at Nagasaki

Heiho 8 LCUs 46020/549/20
Fushan 1 LCU 1760/13/0
Tsitsihar 7 LCUs 33300/322/10
Tabun-Nur 1 LCU 1380/15/0
Hailar 7 LCUs 26340/316/8

Ed's report is gone over by a General Staff meeting and they note that if the numbers are close to being correct there are over 100K troops facing the Red Army at just these 5 locations. How many other troops are there? They decide to recommend an increase in the amount of Lend Lease materials sent to the Soviet Union. They also want pressure applied to the British to try and reopen a supply route into China. These two countries are vital to the war effort as huge numbers of Japanese troops are being tied down and can't be used against American forces in the Pacific.

That evening at the White House FDR is getting ready to have dinner when the telephone rings. “Yes?” he answers, “Uh huh. I see. Well then since we're all in agreement do it. Yes. Good night general.” It has been decided that supplies, tanks and planes will be sent in ever greater numbers to the Soviets and the Chinese will get more aid too. Something will have to be done about the level of corruption in China though as liaison officers report rampant misappropriation of supplies by Chinese generals.

Pete has been loaded onto an ambulance to be transported to a hospital in Townsville. It's a long ride, but he's stable enough that he should be fine as long as he's checked up on along the way. Pete has been sedated for the trip as the doctor has decided that his patient's mental state has become a primary concern now. The driver's aide has been given pills to give to Pete to keep him calm for the ride.

The entire Pacific theater has been relatively quiet excepting the usual air raids on the poor Chinese soldiers who must endure the attacks, never having enough supplies and poor leadership throwing their lives away.

Troops in Australia continue to move to their assigned positions for the upcoming Operation Grinder. The US Army will be fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Australians in an attempt to throw the invaders out of Australia. As this operation begins the USN will be undergoing a massive effort to get the warships refitted and upgraded so that they will be ready for a hoped for thrust into the SRA. All of this is dependent on Darwin being retaken. Of course there are plans that are going ahead for an Operation Snowball should Grinder fail.

Bill puts pen to paper and writes a letter to Sandy before turning in for the night.

August 29, 1942 Imphal

The day starts out as another hot and lazy one when suddenly the tranquility of the base is shattered by the air raid warning sirens. Personnel scramble to their various posts as pilots jump into their planes and ground crews remove chocks in a rehearsed ballet. Everyone peers skywards straining to see the Japanese planes that are on their way while the Spits and Warhawks race down the runway and claw their way into the air, climbing as fast as they can in an attempt to intercept the inbound enemy. Having ground assets in place has enabled the Allies to get their planes into a position to jump the Japanese as 16 X Spits and 24 X Warhawks are on station to greet the Japanese. Their problem immediately becomes apparent as the Japanese number 94 X Zero and 23 X Tony. The combat is fast and furious with planes trailing smoke and flames as they fall earthwards. After a short, but violent fight the Japanese head back to their base having lost 5 X Zero (2 damaged) and 8 X Tony (2 damaged). It has been a successful sweep conducted by the Japanese as 12 X Spits were downed and 23 X Warhawks were destroyed, though they did pay a price.

“It's impossible to deal with so many Japanese fighters,” one AVG pilot is heard to say in the debriefing hut. He's one of the lucky pilots that didn't fly because he had no plane. “How the hell are we ever supposed to beat the Japanese when we can barely keep up with the loses. The Mohawks are supposed to be replaced with Warhawks but there are none because of days like today.”

What he hasn't mentioned is the pilots that have been lost today. They are much harder to replace than the planes.

The Chinese troops that sit astride the Japanese supply lines to Chungking are attacked and forced to retreat. They had no chance against a well supplied and led enemy while they were hungry, thirsty, low on ammunition and poorly led. How can they ever hope to hold the enemy at bay when they know they will be attacked and yet they are so ill prepared for the fight?

Ed has scheduled dinner tomorrow night with Bill Donovan. He calls an orderly and hands her today's report which is very light on information.

67 NG is at Port Moresby
134 IJA BF is at Victoria Point
23 A is at Chungking
6.6K troops are at Saigon
111.8K troops are at Kwajalein
10 AF is at Kagoshima
39.6K troops are at Changchun

Ed has made notes in the report questioning the size of the force on Kwajalein and requested closer attention be given to this force as it's to large to be a garrison. Where are they intending to hit? What assets can we send to the area? So many questions and so few answers as he stares at a map.

The submarine mining campaign is continuing with mixed results. Occasionally an IJN ship hits a mine, which is a bonus. The Japanese are being kept busy sweeping their ports constantly because of the random nature of the operation. They must be spending a lot of effort to keep their ports clear and that is the main purpose as subs from Pearl Harbor, Anchorage and Brisbane continue to spread their deadly seeds. Soon Noumea will join this list of staging bases. As the USN gets more AS and MLE vessels the mining campaign can grow and be conducted from more forward locations.

Pete's ambulance continues on it's bumpy trek towards Townsville with stops made along the way for food, fuel and a rest for the men and machine. Sometimes there are medical facilities where they stop and medications are dispensed for the passengers. Pete is being kept in a groggy state so the driver's helper is kept busy feeding and giving him water. The driver is constantly grumbling about the ambulance needing this and that fixed and how are they ever supposed to work under such conditions. The constant flow of units in the opposite direction forces them to spend lots of time pulled to the side of the road. Rarely some units will make way for the ambulance as the fresh troops look at it grimly.

Bill has spent another boring day at Mare Island, which he finds amusing as the place is busier than it's ever been. He spends his afternoon rereading a letter from Sandy that said how she was so upset to learn that she had missed his visit and how much she misses him. That evening he writes to her again.

Gunny is very proud of his platoon as they have been honed into a cohesive unit that is primed to go. What he's worried about is that their fine edge will be lost by the time they ship out. Today he has planned a forced march for them with full packs. The men naturally moan about this but are ready and move out right on schedule. About 5 miles into their march a halt is called for and the men grumble as they take off their packs and flop down on the ground. Gunny laughs at them calling them soft, telling them that maybe 20 miles today won't be enough for them. Just then a truck pulls up on the road and the civilians on it speak with Gunny. The men assume that they are asking for directions when they are ordered on their feet and told to unload the truck. Much to their astonishment the truck contains food and beer. The LT and Gunny decided a week ago to give their boys a treat that they couldn't do on the base. The two men pooled their money and arranged everything quietly for today. While eating Gunny's mind drifts to Red and Cookie, wondering where the war has taken them. He knows that he should contact them, but he's been so busy lately that there just hasn't been the time. His train of thought is broken by the men calling for him to join them in a baseball game. Somebody has put a bat, ball and gloves on the truck.

Ed and Bill Donovan sit a a table having a beer while they wait for dinner to be brought to their table. Ed hands the report to Bill, who reads it.

84.6K troops at Kiungahan
Iki Fortress is at Ikitsuki
22 D is at Shanghai
126 IJA BF is at Gili Gili
2.8K troops are at Matsue
17 RCAR is at Niigata
5 D is at Darwin
124 planes are based at Changchun
142 IJA BF is at Paramushio
4.5K troops are at Hanoi
45 RCB is at Chiamussu
12 AvR is at Singapore
118 IJA BF is at Wuhan

Recon flights over Myitkyina have shown 4 LCUs are based there with 7420/68/0 and flights over Tarawa revealed that 3 LCUs are present made up of 11/940/53/0.

“Well,” says Donovan, “You've probably been informed that today Luxembourg was formally annexed into the Reich. The people responded by going on a general strike. The use of French accents in Luxembourg dialect is now a crime that will be subject to be fined. How much would you like to bet that tomorrow Rommel will attack the British? How about 2 tickets to a ball game?”

“You might have the Pirates working for you now,” says Ed, “But believe me when I tell you that you've got that crew beat by a country mile. I think I'll pass on the bet unless you can call the outcome of the battle too.”

Donovan laughs and says, “You know that I just might be able to predict who wins that fight.”

30 miles SE of Batan Island the submarine Grouper is attacked, but she escapes with no damage.

A USN ASWTF on patrol locates and attacks a Japanese sub about 75 miles NW of Koumac. The reports contained claimed the DD Mahan scored multiple hits and damaged the sub.

The AS Fulton is now berthed at Noumea as are many other USN ships. Some of Fulton's crew stare at the number of warships and are amazed at the power there. They talk about where the carriers could've gone, but what they really wonder about is when they will be able to go ashore.

Gunny has heard lots of rumors in his day, but this one takes the cake. “We're going to invade Honshu? Have you looked at a map? Do you know where Honshu is? Do you suppose that the Japs might be nice enough to let us just sail right up and join them for tea? Are we supposed to go right into Tokyo? Where the hell did you say you heard this from? ”

The man looks sheepishly at Gunny and points to another member of his squad as the source of this as the other men start to laugh.

“No wonder,” says Gunny who is having a hard time holding back his own laughter. He doesn't say another word, just turns on his heels and walks away shaking his head. What Gunny doesn't know is that the 2nd Marine Division has received orders and operational plans are being made by the divisional staff.

The ambulance carrying Pete has broken down again and the driver has declared the vehicle to be done for. Luckily for them the stream of traffic heading in the other direction is almost a nonstop parade so it isn't long before 2 trucks stop to give them a hand. It turns out the men are mechanics following their unit to pick up any breakdowns. After about 20 minutes of chat, work and sharing smokes the ambulance is ready to go again. For the passengers the trip seems to be never ending.

Ed's daily report is making it's rounds.

72 planes are at Mutanchiang
Funauke Fortress is at Sakashima
Chichijima Fortress is at Niigata
Yokosuka BF is at Tokyo
6.9K troops are at Shimuzu
8 RAAR is at Lunga
127 IJNAF BF is at Truk
54 D is at Okayama

Recon

Tarawa 4 LCUs 12560/47/0
Mandalay 13 LCUs 17920/117/130

Moscow has supplied intel as follows:

Heiho 8 LCUs 45220/553/19
Tsitsihar 6 LCUs 27980/308/17
Tabun-Nur 1 LCU 1480/16/0
Mishan 4 LCUs 0/8/148
Hailar 7 LCUs 26600/344/8

Japanese troops reached the outskirts of Broome and immediately began pounding it with artillery, but there are no Australian loses. The only troops there are BF support so it's expected to fall on the first attack.

Ed reads a short note sent to him by Bill Donovan. It says: “I told you so. Rommel attacked the British in an attempt to break the line at El Alamein today. I'll bet you he fails.”

The submarine Drum spotted a convoy about 50 miles SE of Tarakan. She attacked, but the fish either missed or were duds. Drum did make good her escape with the escorts never even knowing that she was there.

The CV Wasp was spotted by a patrolling Nell and the CV Lexington was located by a snooping Betty. “Now that the cat's out of the bag I wonder how long before we're attacked,” says a blue shirt aboard the Lex.

As the ambulance carrying Pete to a hospital continues it's monotonous trip Pete sleeps, thanks to his medication.

Gunny is keeping his Marines fit by giving them little free time. “I don't want you getting killed because of something that I could've done better,” he says.

Bill wonders when, if ever he'll be assigned to something, anything. This waiting is going to drive him crazy. Today was spent reading a letter from Sandy and writing one in return, eating, going for a run to stay in shape and then later a card game. He wonders what it's like for the fleet units now on station in the New Hebrides. The USN has split it's power between Alaska and the South Pacific so it's easy to think of where he'd rather be.

Red has taken sick and he's been ordered by the doctor to do nothing other than bed rest. Cookie knows somebody who has an apartment in Honolulu and now the 3 of them, Lucky too, are living there temporarily. The Palawan will have to do without them for a wile and they wished the crew good luck when they left her. They are now waiting for some test results and Cookie will call the doctor's office in a couple of days. This won't slow down their business plans though as they have maps with areas of interest circled on them, a banker backing their venture and a lawyer filing the needed papers to get the deals done. Their first deal is now a thing of the past and they're eying more.

I'm beginning to think that if the Allies don't do something soon, this war could end abruptly with the collapse of the allied goverment and a Japanese Victory - your opponent seems to be a very good player!

Steve is a good player and my waiting for a chance to exploit mistakes hasn't come to fruition. Even when I have caught him he's lucked out by being in the right area and making the right calls. A good example of this was the Big E being sunk because he sprinted to the south instead of the east and caught her because she had paused to replenish. My Replenishment TF only escaped because they sailed to the SE and the KB was running low on fuel from the pursuit.

The Allied governments will manage to deliver enough to avoid their downfall and the prospects for the future does hold promise.

September 1, 1942 Moscow

Stalin thunders when told of the IJA troops outside of Sunwu. “I want a cable sent directly to Tokyo telling them that these troops moving on Sunwu will not be tolerated. If they are not withdrawn immediately it will be considered an act of war. Are we sending everything we can spare to our Eastern troops? I want those formations filled out and up to strength as I don't trust the Japanese. We will be going to war with them just as soon as Hitler is destroyed.”

In the meantime a meeting in the White House is breaking up and only a few have been asked to remain. Ed's report was touched on earlier.

293.6K troops are located at Palau
Tsugaru Fortress is at Aomori
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
109 IJA BF is at Kaigan
Ryojun Fortress is at Port Arthur
10 AvR is at Changchun
Kwantung DB is at Changchun
3 AD is at Rangoon
124 IJA BF is at Tavoy
252.2K troops are at Kagoshima
50 CB is at Kyoto
13 A is at Chungking

Recon flights showed the following

Tarawa 4 LCUs 12120/53/0
Mandalay 50 fighters, 73 aux, 14 LCUs 13840/79/139
Gili Gili 7 fighters, 54 bombers, 60 aux, 8 LCUs 12360/116/0

The Soviets reported that

Heiho 8 LCUs 45300/566/30
Fushan 1 LCU 1580/17/0
Arshaan 2 LCUs 4460/75/0
Tsitsihar 6 LCUs 27180/312/14
Mutanchiang 8 LCUs 32520/341/74
Hailar 7 LCUs 26340/319/8

Deboyne Island was invaded today

Broome was bombarded with artillery again, no damage and no loses.

FDR clears his throat and all assembled in the Oval Office immediately fall silent. “Gentlemen, we must proceed will all possible haste with Operations Snowball and Sunshine. I want the Navy to commence the upgrading of it's ships as originally scheduled, but at an accelerated pace. I will speak with Churchill and try to get him to release some APs to us. We will have to arrange escorts from Australia to the appropriate points for these vessels so make the plans. I want the Marines to be ready and the Army too. The forward staging area will be well stocked with supplies and replacement pools should be great enough to allow us to exploit any opportunities that present themselves. We have our work cut out for us, but we will prevail and our days on the defensive are rapidly closing.”

As the meeting is breaking up Ed is stopped by an Army General who says, “A mutual friend has asked me to tell you that the Afrika Korps is throwing itself against a rocky shore and is doomed to fail. He also mentioned that the 1st Panzer Army has a bridgehead across the Terek River near Mazdok.” The general smiles and leaves.

Ed ponders the ramifications of what the man has told him and he wonders if the OSS can manage to supply such intel all of the time.

Red wakes up in the late morning and smells Cookie at work in the kitchen.

“Cookie I'm not hungry so don't bother making me any food.”

“Red relax,” replies Cookie, “I'm making my lunch and something for Lucky, all you're going to get is tea and toast for now.”

When Cookie checks in on Red 20 minutes later he finds a sleeping patient.

Bill is feeling down as he has been watching officers arrive and ship out all the time and he just rots here at Mare Island. He has begun to wonder if the promise made by Ed has been forgotten. If it weren't for the steady stream of letters from Sandy and his daily runs he thinks that he'd go nuts.

Gunny relaxes as the trucks, now loaded with tired Marines, head back to their base. He had told his platoon that they were making his “little” 20 mile marches to easily and that they deserved more since they were in such good shape. The men had grumbled and became alarmed when they passed the usual turn around point and continued on their way. When they reached the trucks and got on more than one man let out a sigh of relief. Gunny has repeatedly told them to expect the unexpected and that things are not always what they seem to be. Starting tomorrow they will move to a temporary camp in a remote coastal area and being training for amphibious landings.

On the ambulance carrying Pete they've only managed to cover about 60 miles today as armored formations clogged the road. Pete has started running a low fever and the man responsible for him and the others says to the driver. “I'm only an assistant driver, not a doctor. If we can't find this guy at least an aid station I won't be help responsible for him. We need to cover more ground or I'll die of old age sitting here.” The two men agree to drive through the night to try and make up lost time. They plan on alternating shifts of 2 hours to try and prevent falling asleep at the wheel. They feed the men who are their charges and then eat a little themselves. After a smoke they load everyone back aboard and drive off.

Deboyne Island fell to the Japanese.

Broome has withstood the continual bombarding by the Japanese gunners who haven't managed to hit anything of value, yet. Australian commanders can't understand why the Japanese don't attack the virtually undefended base.

“OK, so you told me so. What I want to know is can your people get that kind of intel for the PTO too? Sure Bill, see you then.” Ed hangs up the phone and prepares to leave the office. It's been a long day and it's gotten to the point that he really doesn't like having to go to the White House anymore. He's tired of listening to reports made by the Army complaining about the Navy and vicea versa.

Red seems to be doing better. Cookie knows it's the chicken soup that he's made for the boy.

The ambulance ride has become an obsession with the driver and his helper. They make stops for eating, relieving themselves and fuel. They did make a fast stop at a medial aid station and a doctor took a look at Pete, gave him an injection and changed the bandage. He then told them to get Pete to the hospital. The road is still choked with convoys heading in the opposite direction so they decide to drive through the night again, looking to cover as much distance as possible.

Bill has just finished posting another letter to Sandy and now it's time for his run. These runs are getting a little longer with each passing day and Bill thinks that he hasn't been in as good a shape as he is now since he graduated from the Academy. The runs are even better for his mental health, he thinks, as he passes by the Officer's Club to the cheers of some guys that he knows.

Sandy sits at the kitchen table and writes to Bill. She invites him to Thanksgiving dinner, if he's still Stateside. She takes her walks, prepares meals for herself and her father, does the housekeeping and laundry, but all the time she's missing Bill.

Joe Orsini of Hoboken, New Jersey has been inducted into the United States Marine Corps and tomorrow his basic training begins. Like most of the young men not knowing what to expect worries them. If their DI is half as mean as he appeared to be when they arrived then training is going to be rough.

September 3, 1942 Washington DC

16 A is at Rabaul
3.9K troops are at Nagato
248.7K troops are at Sasebo
4K troops are at Osumi
57 D is 75 miles SE of Fushan
24 ER is at Chiamussu
9 ER is at Chungking
14 CB is at Lae
19.3K troops are at Shikka

Recon flights have generated the following:

Gili Gili 7 fighters, 63 bombers, 63 aux, 9 LCUs 21340/167/0
Poert Moresby 14 fighters, 11 bombers, 33 aux

The Japanese artillery again has bombarded Broome, to no effect. The way is wide open for them to attack and still nothing comes.

The submarine Growler was attacked by IJN DDs and suffered light systems damage and moderate flooding. She will return to base immediately. The location was not provided in the radio transmission.

Red is rapidly regaining his strength and Cookie has all he can do just to keep Red in the apartment.

“Tomorrow, I already told you tomorrow we'll all go to the park. You can watch Lucky romp, but only watch from a park bench. Clear enough? I want you better, no relapses. OK?” Cookie waits for an answer with his hands on his hips.

“Alright,” says Red, “But can we at least walk around the park a little? I tell you this dog is great for finding girls.”

Sandy reads another letter from Bill and sits idly on the porch watching some birds. According to the newspapers the war in the Pacific is not going well and the USN has been nowhere to be seen since the sinking of the Enterprise. There is a growing feeling that the war will be a long one and she knows that Bill will be in the middle of it. Things seem to be going better against the Germans in Africa and Russia, so why not Japan she wonders.

The assistant ambulance driver is speeding down the open road, trying to stay awake. The driver is sleeping next to him and the lack of somebody to talk to and the boredom of the drive is getting to him. Maybe they are pushing to hard, he thinks to himself as his eyes close and his head droops forward. He snaps back just in time to keep the ambulance on the road as he skids to a stop.

The driver awakens and asks, “Why are we stopped?”

“I can't stay awake any longer so before I crash I stopped,” is the reply.

“OK, then I'll take over and you sleep for a while,” says the driver as the men both exit the vehicle to trade places. Minutes later they're off again.

In Northern Africa Rommel's withdrawal has been speeded up by heavy pressure exerted by troops from New Zealand.

The "Kiwis" did indeed provide sterling service against Rommel's forces. But the Second Battle of El Alamein, which forced Rommel to begin his retreat, did not begin until late October '42. IIRC, early September '42 was a lull period while Montgomery built up his forces.

The desert was a seesaw battle and if you check you'll see that Rommel was indeed on the retreat at this time.

I might fall off the semi schedule that I've developed here, though I'll try not to.  World Cup dominates the day, the war with Steve, this AAR and I'm just starting a campaign using AE.  Oh yeah and in about a week I'll have some surgery. This being Brazil the hospital doesn't provide internet access so until I'm in my own bed with my notebook I'll be out of touch.

September 4, 1942 Pearl Harbor

The AP Tasker Bliss is entering the repair yard at Pearl Harbor where she will have repairs finished and be upgraded. The crew has again been reminded that what happened those fateful days is not to be mentioned under any circumstances, to anyone. They are reminded that the penalty for loose lips will be severe.

It has been reported that IJN MSWs detected and are sweeping mines at Takamatsu.

Broome was bombarded again and there were no casualties. Why don't the Japanese attack and be done with it?

115 X Zero and and a Babs appeared over Imphal and were challenged by 28 X Spitfire. The badly outnumbered Spits fell like flies and only one managed to get back to base. The Japanese lost 12 Zeros and another 3 were damaged.

The intel report filed by Ed's office contained the following information.

2.8K troops are at Matsue
Iki Fortress is at Ikitsuki
15 MxB is at Chungking
Ryojun Fortress is at Port Arthur
36 CB is at Canton
22 AvU is at Brunei
16 A is at Rabaul

Recon flights at the following places showed:
Port Moresby 16 LCUs
Lashio 4 LCUs 35600/417/18
Gili Gili 14 fighters, 50 bombers, 80 aux, 10 LCUs 22280/188/0

At the park Lucky romps as Red and Cookie watch him. The dog has become a large and powerful dog who loves to play roughly, but will immediately stop if you say “stop it”. Cookie manages to keep Red in tow as they enjoy a sunny afternoon before heading back to the apartment.

“I wonder how they're doing on the Palawan without us?” wonders Red and Cookie says that they're probably fine.

At a hospital in Charter Towers a doctor looks over Pete and the other passengers of the wild ambulance ride. He instructs the two drivers to wash up, get some food and then sleep before they push on for Townsville. Pete has been pumped full of penicillin in the hopes that this will bring down his fever. The bandages have been changed and Pete is resting comfortably in a real bed for the first time since it seems like forever.

Bill has a new buddy to jog with and the two of them start out on a five mile run. After the exercise they wash up and head into San Francisco. On they way Bill reads a letter from Sandy when suddenly the bus comes to a halt. It seems that war production doesn't include many new parts for vehicles and the bus has broken down. Bill and his pal start to walk towards their destination while trying to thumb a ride. Not long afterwards a car stops and picks them up. It's driven by another naval officer and the three of them decide to join forces.

Joe Orsini is rapidly learning to fear his DI and learn his left from his right. He thinks that there is nothing worse than getting the DI mad and he's done that already and the result was a dressing down like he's never even imagined possible. He wonders if he'll ever survive training and parts of his body hurt that he never knew existed before this.

September 5, 1942 The Tarpon

The submarine Tarpon has taken on a load of mines and departed Brisbane, her destination is Kendari. Members of the crew are very unhappy about another trip being made with mines aboard. The grumbling about faulty torpedoes is bad enough for morale, but having these things on board is nerve rattling.

Near Kwajalein the SS Amberjack made an attack on some MSWs and the fish were duds. The men are in a near state of mutiny because risking their lives to use weapons that don't work is getting to them.

The Japanese bombarded Broome again today with artillery and again did no damage.

Attu and Kiska Islands are now garrisoned with construction battalions and RCTs. Amchikita Island is seeing a buildup of supplies and troops are on the way.

Ed's report continues with:

40.3K troops are at Mutanchiang
5 A is at Heiho
38 D is planning to attack Chungking
Yura Fortress is at Takamatsu
40 D is planning to assault Sian
53 D is at Osaka
1.8K troops are at Yap
44 HAAB is at Manila
7 AvR is at Medan
112 IJN BF is at Wakkanai
Yokosuka RCAR is at Tokyo
47.9K troops are at Maloelap

Photos taken by recon flights have led the analysts to report the following:

Gili Gili 9 fighters, 47 bombers, 56 aux, 10 LCUs 22320/160/0
Port Moresby 24 fighters, 27 bombers, 60 aux, 29 LCUs
Tarawa 3 LCUs 7540/35/0

Red is feeling his oats and Cookie has given him the OK to take Lucky for a short afternoon walk. After Red and the dog leave Cookie heads to the docks to see if there's any news about the Palawan. He misses her and living in an apartment is not a comfortable situation for him.

Gunny and his men are busily preparing for an amphibious assault rehearsal. The amount of boats available is nowhere near enough so the men are spending far to much time waiting for a chance to give it a go.

The ambulance leaves the field hospital and Pete is resting in the back. He's doing much better and the drivers have been instructed to take it easy for the remainder of their journey as wounded men don't need to be bounced around so violently.

Joe Orsini did it again and the DI is screaming in his face calling him a quarter wit, among other less flattering things. The amount of profanities directed at the terrified Orsini is nothing short of amazing. All of this just because he's so afraid of making a mistake he turned the wrong way during a close order drill. The DI ends his tirade by telling John that mere pushups won't make up for being stupid and when they return to the barracks he will clean the head so that it shines. A couple of hours later the DI approaches John and hands him a toothbrush and orders him to get to work. A little while later a member of the training platoon tells Joe about a man in another unit getting smacked around by a DI. Joe thinks that he's helpless and bound to screw up and get in even worse trouble. All he wants to do is to fight and here he is on his hands and knees with a bucket and a toothbrush in a head.

Another day another letter, another run and still forgotten by the Navy. Bill wonders if he should use the letter that authorizes him to use and do anything, but thinks better of it and continues the run.

The Victory Points are: Japan 16647
Allies 5242
