Indeed! I am thinking about asking the Dept of the Navy to leave those useless wooden decks off the Essex class and stick some 8 inch guns on them. I have your agreement then?

Yep, we're going to chuck all the chockheads off our carriers and put extra 6in guns and torpdog tubes on them. All that ex-hangar space means we can carry a shed load more ammo.

I would have thought that ammo would be a secondary consideration for that extra space. Wouldn't this be an excellent place for rum storage instead?

Use the AVCAT fuel tanks for that!

Situation, March 9, 1942: On the eve of the 8th, a Jap, transport force was spotted of fthe Belep Is (you know the ones with the headhunters near the NW tip of New Scotland). As there were no large surface forces spotted, I order USS Trenton and 2 DD's to sweep New Ullapool and try to kill some Japs. Well, the transports were indeed headed there but.......so was Hiei and her escorts. The good news is the fight with Hiei consumed ammo, time and torpedoes. The bad news is USS Humphreys was sunk. Hiei and friends then headed toward New Edinburgh. They were met with a very stout defence by the USN/RAN crusier group and had to turn away.

The wierd thing is Lord Admiral Sprior and I just had a vague hunch it was about time for major jap forces to be back for another sortie so I left the more capable force to guard the harbor. If there is no ammo replenishment ship at New Ulapool, then Hiei will be out of the surface fighting for 5-7 d.

The SBD/TBD attacks on Hiei and escorts were really disappointing. Coordination was terrible. In general, the USAAF escorts did not fly with the Navy bombers. ONE TBD SQUADRON LOST 16 BOMBERS when they were the first in, without escorts, againast a fresh Jap CAP of 30 Zeroes. Uggh. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

The Japs attacked the Gryme's New Dike Line with disastrous casualties (a 1 to 4) attack. I may even be able to counterattack next turn.

*********US Senate Building, Closed Appropriations Committee Mtg., March 8, 1942**********

Undersecretary of the Navy: ...Sec. Knox is most keen that the committee authorize expanded production of the SBD. We are experiencing a severe shortage in the South Pacific as we speak.

Sen. Mead, NY: SBD, isn't that Douglas Aircraft?

Undersecretary of the Navy: Yes Senator, it is.

Sen. Mead, NY: Screw that! That's California. I'd sooner the Nazis occupied Long Island than that SOB Johnson get a gift like that. The excitement woudl porbalby kill him anyway. What's wrong with the P-36?

Undersecretary of the Navy: <taken aback> P-36? But Senator, she is widely regarded as obsolete and is certainly not a capable dive bomber...and...and she is not carrier capable.

Sen. Mead, NY: And manufactured in New York. How does 800 sound?......

Don't know, however, in recognition for the big P-36 contract, he did get a library named after him in Buffalo and was able to retire to a nice bungalo with a lanai in Lakeland, Florida.*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_M._Mead

* I made up the part about the P-36's but I am just really annoyed there aren't any Goddmaned SBD's in the Pacific theater, when in, WWII(b) there were 1000 of the GD things sitting idle in Oklahoma. He did really get a library named after him in Buffalo and he did have a nice bungalo in Lakeland, but I made up the part about the lanai. Well, technically, he MIGHT have had a lanai but I don't really know so, on balance, I think you would have to say I made it up. If anyone is related to Sen. Mead, I am sorry I have besmirched his reputation. I am sure he was a great guy and fun at parties too.

PS..I should add that I have been unfair to the institution of the United States Senate. I am sure they were a great bunch of guys although the prevailing opinion is that Truman was an annoying cretin who never got picked for basketball when he was a kid and who nobody wanted at their secret meetings either.

March 10, New Scotland:

Naval situation: Canberra had about 38 system damage but not much flooding (superstructure hits) from the previous battle with Hiei. She was detached to Auckland with 4 USN DD that were lightly damaged. I believe all can be repaired at Auckalnd. It is nice to have a small shipyard 2-3 d steaming away from the battle.

Northampton, Chester, Astoria, Helm, Clark and La Triomphant returned to New Edinburgh to rearm from the ammunition ship. They ran into Isokaze and Kasumitrying to sneak in among the shipping at New Edinburgh. Isokaze was sunk by gunfire and Kasumi was heavily damaged and will have trouble clearing out before the SBD's get her in the daylight, I think. Two allied tankers ran for Auckland but there was no damage to Allied shipping. Trenton and Reid will join the cruiser group and bombard New Ullapool again tonight as Hiei seems nowhere to be found and there is substantial shipping at New Ullapool. Another USN CA has been ordered up from Auckland.

Air Situation: I sent the remaining TBD's to Suva where they will eventually fly off to the carriers. That was a serious failure. I have chopped the range on the SBD's down to three as the Zeroes at New Ullapool are just killing them. We will let the surface boys do it.

Ground Situation: The combined US Army and Marine forces at the Gryme's New Dyke Line counterattack today. Another US Army regt is 2-3 d out from New Edinburgh by sea. A USMC Raider Bn. is beign fast transported to Tanna where an AVD and 7 PBY's are operating.

Given that I'm now reading about WWII(b) and just passed some posts regarding this famous city, I just have to ask; Where is Auckalnd related to Aukland ... ?

The night of March 10/11 is another wild scene in the waters off New Scotland. You may recall the USN cruiser force was ordered to bombard the airfield at New Ullapool again. The Allied force was comprised of:

CA Astoria
CA Chester
CA Northampton
CL Trenton
DD Downes
DD Helm
DD La Triomphant
DD Stuart
DD Clark

After depth charging the annoying I-173 en route, they arrived off New Ullapool and promptly came upon a Jap transport force of 2x AG, 3 x AK and one PB. They sunk or severely damaged all, which appeared to not be troop ships. Thankfully, Hiei was nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, Kirishima was waiting for them. I really need to get some new recon pilots.

BB Kirishima
CA Kako
CL Tenryu
DD Akigumo
DD Kagero
DD Oyashio
DD Akebono
TB Hato

After a brief exchange of gunfire at night at ranges from 9000-12000 yds., the forces broke off. Only the torpedo boat Hato suffered serious damage. A bombardment of the airfield was prevented.

I am not sure what will happen tonight. Most likely, Kirishima and her escorts have sufficient ammo because the fight was brief. They may tried to bombard New Edinburgh or they may simple cover New Ullapool. The Allied force will rearm and remain at New Edinburgh to protect the Allied airfield.

The attack on the Gryme's New Dyke Line goes badly for us, 1-2 odds and 2 to 1 causalties in the Japs favor. Time to rest and build up.

It might have been a passive aggressive radio operator at headquarters.

Commander: "Did Search find any sign of Hiei?"

Radio Operator: "No, sir."

Commander: "Why are you smiling like that?"

Radio Operator: "Like what, sir?"

Commander: "Ah, never mind!"

Auckalnd is east of West Auckland - where the bogans live.

*********Dili Airfield, Japanese Timor, 09:30, March 11, 1943***********

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart approaches a really crappy looking armored vehicle with big rivets holding together steel plates. The vehicle is buttoned up despite the heat. The man inadvisedly raps on the steel with a stick. A kind of Japanese-lookin guy pops his head up through a hatch.

Japanese-lookin guy: What want?

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: Ah...thank you. Yes. I have the delivery for the big banyan.

Japanese-lookin guy: What mean banyan?

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: Why, it's kind of a celebration, you see. It is an historical term, something to do with vegans or some such thing.

Japanese-lookin guy: What mean vegan?

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: Vegan...ah, yes..well..let me see, that is someone who eats no meat or fish or poultry.

Japanese-lookin guy: No eat fish?

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: No, the strict ones won't even wear leather shoes.

Japanese-lookin guy: Vegan idiot. Banyan have sake?

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: Sake? Oh, no, afraid not. It hardly seemed thematic, but I did bring along a nice Gewurtztraminer to go along with the almond and honey encrusted died figs and I have wonderful, authentic, local native craft party favors.

Japanese-lookin guy: No banyan. Engrish and Americans give up.

A thin but well groomed brown skinned man leading a donkey with a fully laden wooden cart: Oh, bloody Hell! <pauses briefly> Say, I don't suppose you chaps want to have a victory party or something?......

Maybe if the big banyan had gone off as planned, they might have put up a stiffer defence. I find myself that half a bottle of Gewurtztraminer makes me more willing to fight.
