Bit confused regarding weapons energy usage

So in the ship design screen a maxos blasters blurb reads: Energy used 12
But when I add it as a weapon the Weapons segment reads: Maximum Weapons Energy use per second 10
If I add another blaster Max weapons energy goes to 19, 3 blasters use 28, 4 use 37, 5 use 48 and so on.

A velocity shard says Energy used 44, but in Max weapons energy used says 13.

I think the clues in the energy use per second but I can't figure it out, any ideas?

Yeah, shards use a lot of energy but they fire only so often (I guess every 3 seconds for those numbers), so you'll see those numbers on the energy used per second summary for weapons.

It's really useful for determining how many generators you'll want on a ship, in addition to the engine power graph. Too little and your guns/engines will fail. Too much will mean cash spent on needless upkeep.

Ships have an energy pool, which is replenish at the rate you see in the top right corner of the design screen.  Weapons use X amount of power to recharge, but they only fire so quickly.   Thus you get a Energy per Second count which is listed over the armaments box.  Weapons recharge instantly from the pool that the ship has, but weapons only recharge if there is the full energy there.   A ship never has enough pool energy to recharge all weapons, but if the energy per second output of your reactor is higher then the energy per second use of your weapons, you will fire all your weapons at the optimal speed, just staggered.

Thus, a torpedo uses 44 energy but it only fires about once every 3.4 seconds.  The torpedo can be recharged to full during any of those 3.4 seconds and it will fire continuously.  Same thing with Blasters.  They use 12 energy but fire every 1.2 seconds, thus 10 energy per second is needed in order to keep them firing at optimal efficiency.


The trick with warship design is to take the SPRINT energy value and add it to your armaments value and have that be below the recharge per second value of your reactor(s), though a little bit above isnt too bad.   Why do this?  Because you still want to fire every single weapon, when you go as fast as possible.

Ahhh, yeah I see it now thanks, incidentally the shard fires once every 3.3 seconds, so good guess.

So is it recommended to have a reactor output greater than Maximum Weapons energy per second, or a output greater than the combined energy used.
Eg 5Maxos blaster would use 60 energy, but in maximum energy per second it's 48, as they fire once every 1.24secs. Which to aim for?

Icesavage pretty much said it, try to have enough excess energy for Maximum Weapons energy per second + SPRINT energy value (engines). Notice that engines may take a lot of juice, especially if you have many of them.
