I was wondering if there was a way to mod certain ships and stations to make a way for an empire to continue in deep-space. I understand that this would be heavily game breaking as it would mean it is nearly impossible to truly destroy and empire but I still think it would interesting just to see what happens. I'm getting this idea from the Mass Effect universe in which the 'Quarians' live on a massive barely self-sustaining fleet after they were pushed out of their homeworld.

My thoughts would be this: some special ship or module could be placed on really big ships that would allow things such as constructors to be built. Or maybe just a temporary station that could build constructors. So like this you would go out away from planets and try you best to harvest what resources you could grab and then clearing off before the locals arrive in force. The point of this is that it would be really hard but give you a chance to recover some strength in some deep corner of the universe and then come back and strike back at your enemies.

Not sure if that all made sense, I tend to ramble. Thanks for reading anyway, and hope you find this interesting.

An Intresting idea...
For me, a big SW fan, it would make a large Empire's ability to stomp out a Rebellion very difficult. You might be able to achieve something similar with the editor OR even with refueling ships leading to several remote locations and spreading out that way.

I did consider various things like this: A capital ship focused on ship yards to build over ships, refueling and building stations, large capital ships that can extract minerals from areas and store them in massive cargo holds etc. This stuff works in essence but if you can not get something with the ability of a constructor then you are in a constant degrading spiral. Also I do not think you can even build star-bases without spaceports. So in the end the only thing this technique would allow you to do is build a few small ships in deep space.

Adding to this idea though I'm guessing this would definitely not be possible, game-engine-wise, is the ability to place make ships that are big enough and have enough passenger compartments or something similar so that you would not loose if say you lost all your planets.
