I did consider various things like this: A capital ship focused on ship yards to build over ships, refueling and building stations, large capital ships that can extract minerals from areas and store them in massive cargo holds etc. This stuff works in essence but if you can not get something with the ability of a constructor then you are in a constant degrading spiral. Also I do not think you can even build star-bases without spaceports. So in the end the only thing this technique would allow you to do is build a few small ships in deep space. Adding to this idea though I'm guessing this would definitely not be possible, game-engine-wise, is the ability to place make ships that are big enough and have enough passenger compartments or something similar so that you would not loose if say you lost all your planets.
