ORIGINAL: Gary Childress In this map the Germans might have stalled me longer if they had set a team in the Koevering building along with the team in the 2 story building across the river. However, they were concentrated around the 2 story building. They almost broke my charge, however, two brave teams rallied to get back in the action. I had to do some clicking like a madman to get them to stay on target. From now on I'm not going to mess around with mortars and MGs when storming a bridge. There just isn't time to set up a nice neat tactical attack "by the book". Once I secure the bridges then will be the time for the mortars and MGs and zooks to set up for the enemy counter attack.
Yeah, it's really a matter of just rushing the bridge, and for the Germans setting up whatever MGs you have to try and cut down a couple of members of each squad rushing the bridge until you have the chance to blow it - and the amount of time varies from map to map. On this map, I think it's 5 minutes before you can blow the bridge, and the three squads I had in the Koevering building were dead and the German morale broke before that time elapsed! On some of the other maps it's been up to 10 minutes before the bridge can be blown.
I think your policy of just rushing the bridge with infantry is the best one. The German forces on these maps are too small to effectively hold off a dozen squads running for the bridge - they can't shoot enough of the Allies to stop the rush. But you do have a lot of clicking to keep those squads moving.
I always try and set up some sort of enfilading fire when defending if at all possible, and sometimes that works while at other times it doesn't. With these small forces though, I've just been overwhelmed for the most part and had to concentrate what firepower I have. Even then, it's not always enough.

The first victory location is secured. Now where is that second flak gun? It's not anywhere near the flak tower! I have two puny teams of men going for the whole bridge. Everyone else is bogged down. I can't afford to go back and baby sit my other men. They'll have to take care of themselves. I have to keep my men running on the bridge so I need to stick with them!

OK. I found the second flak 38. It's on the far side of the river with a beautiful view of the whole bridge. It has already fired a couple bursts causing some of my men to duck for cover. More mouse clicking to get them to get back up and move!! No time to waste!

Here's the 2nd flak. Much to my chagrin it's in a perfect location to cover the entire bridge. It's already firing on my men and slowing them down. AND I didn't bring any mortars with me!

WTH!! Now the Germans are rushing the bridge!!
If they take the south VL I'm in trouble. I have one rifleman at the south VL left over from the teams that rushed the bridge. However, thinking ahead I had moved up a team to cover the bridge approach myself. Wow! I'm good!!

My men thwart the German counter attack. Dang, the AI almost threw me a loop there! Had I not thought of it earlier I woiuld have lost the south end of the bridge, maybe even the middle if the Germans kept going!

Battle over! Grave bridge belongs to the 82nd Airborne. What a bloodbath though. My BG has been torn to shreds. But thanks to the one little rifle team that could, my men did not perish in vain!

Can they hold it until XXX corps arrives?
It's going to be a while before XXX corps will get there. All the bridges to the south have been blown. They'll need to be repaired. I don't know how long that will take.

I wish I had thought of the infantry rush earlier. I might have saved a bridge or two. Now XXX corps is going to be loitering around Eindhoven for a few days until I can get at least two bridges repaired for them.
There is a bad translation in German Battlegroup Window. Bodenständige Einheit would translate to 'autochthonal unit' and here we use this adjective in a total different meaning.

Hi Guys what settings are people using on the GC? timer countdown/control all VL's etc?
cheers
btw i'm using the rush attack tactic on the bridges now too
ps should i lock the BG's?
I started my campaign with 60 minute timer on. I really don't need all that much time trying to take the bridges, however, I think it should make things interesting when the Germans counterattack. It allows more time for maneuver. I used to play CC with no timer at all. I would basically keep going until all VLs were taken or else morale got too low.

Nice one Gary..
Hey, do me a favor..
See if your XXX Corps units can cross the bridges at Son and Best even though they are showing as being repaired.
My units were able to cross, but I thought the wrench symbol meant it had already been repaired and thus I did not take a screen shot..
Chad
I'll definitely check it out. I'm guessing you mean they were able to cross on the strategic map or are you also talking about watching them cross the river on the tactical map?
