The real philosphical argument is whether it is illegal or immoral to bet on the Cards if you know Musial is going to play.

You guys like the beard?

I am going nuts waiting for the turn. I want to start the relief effort for New Scotland in motion....the moving of planes and materiel...that sort of rubbish.

Remember how I said it seemed the Japs had not deduced that Allied fighters were operating from New Edinburgh?

Well, forget I said that.

*************************April 23**************************

New Scotland: NP was bombarded by Fuso and a totall of 4 CA's. NE was hit by a CA and 2 CL's which were quite effective. When the sun came up dozens of Bettys/Nells and Sallys swooped in from New Ullapool.

Only 12 P39's/P-400 rose to meet them. Some 8 bombers were shot down while 4 planes were destroyed onthe ground during bombardment or bombing raids. I missed another opportunity to kill some more Bettys.

I moved the BB's staging at Auckland further South in order to free up some of the P-39's there. I am going to move up 3 understrength squadrons of P-39's to Norfolk Is and send some AK's there to try to incite an attack by Bettys and carrier aircraft. I need to wear the LYB's down a bit before any carrier engagement.

Equipment question: Were they really that pointy back then or was there some kind of field modification?

Didn't Howard Hughes invent the bra to "enhance" Jayne Russell for one of his movies?
If so, it seems likely the difficulties of sewing such a complex shape would have compelled him to use the nose piece from P38 drop tanks.

BTW - hi ALL! I be new here and am immensely enjoying the AARs + digressions.

*******Officer's Club, USAAF 90th BS(M), Auckland, April, 22, 1942******

Young man in fine silk shirt: Done! But, Yossarian, I am curious how you found out.

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: That's not all I know about.

Young man in fine silk shirt: I don't know what you are talking about?

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: Oh, come off it, Milo. I am a "majority" owner <makes air quotes. He withdraws a tattered document from his pocket. It reads "Issued July 1, 1942, 1,000 shares M&M Enterprise, Shipbuilding Division". It is signed by "Milo Minderbinder, President". He hands it to the other man>

Young man in fine silk shirt: <examines the document, which appears genuine. A look of growing surprise appears on his face> Sweet Mother of God!

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: That's what I said.

Young man in fine silk shirt: <Pauses> Yossarian, you crazy SOB, do you realize what we could do in the stock market?

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: Nah, I didn't pay attention to that kind of stuff.

Young man in fine silk shirt: What about sports betting? Who is going to win the World Series this year?

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: Cardinals in 5 in 42-a.

Young man in fine silk shirt: I'll make some calls.

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: I wouldn't do that, Milo, you crazy SOB.

Young man in fine silk shirt: Why not? <sits back down>

Hirsute USAAF Cpt.: Because, it was the Yanks in 6 in 42(b).

Young man in fine silk shirt: YOSSARIAN, YOU CRAZY SOB! THAT'S BRILLIANT! <jumps upright> We need to make sure Musial doesn't get drafted, then we put everything on the Cards! <runs out of the club>

Better yet, have Milo make sure Dimaggio and Joe Gordon both get reclassified 1-A and drafted from the Yanks: no remaining .300 hitters, no chance against the Cards!

Remember, the color of insurance when you're fixing a bet is green! (Or is it "gord" in WW2-c?)

Well guys I just read all of this in one go, brilliant. Very entertaining and also learned a lot. My approach to stopping the LYBs is somewhat different, though I also have a similar tactic of only reading the manual if I have to..... and when i do i never make any sense of it.

I look forward to seeing what transpires next.

Roger

You are right. Two of the Wirraway-equipped squadrons in Oz can go to Beaufort V's and we have 11 in inventory.

Still, it would be a shame to lose the striking power of the Wirraway. Awesome machine.

Damn, once more spill my coffee on my screen, i had forget not to drink while reading this AAR

Yes...but it looks like some silk thingy. My experience is you don't get that kind of performance from surplus Fallschirmjager equipment.

It seems there must have been some modification of of the Schwerpunkt itself.

Could you arrange for M&M Enterprises to provide each and every LYB moving towards Oz and New Edinburgh a copy of the "Fraulein---a GI's prize of war" poster?

Along with another poster of Eleanor Roosevelt with the logo "The women of Australia are looking forward to your visit!"

I bet the LYBs change direction and head west in a hurry!

Quiet day in the air. The Japs were licking their wounds after losing something near 16 bombers. Still, every attack consumes Allied supplies. The Jap carriers disappeared again.

Fighter trap over Norfolk in 2 d. USN carriers departed Pearl. May God be with them.

*********April 26, 1942***********

New Scotland: The LYB's pulled out all the stops for an assult on New Perth. A night bombardment by two CA's was moderately successful, destroying a P-39 on the ground. At daybreak, 40 Nells and Bettys and 34 Jap fighters flew in from New Ullapool and were met by 28 Allied fighters. 5 enemy planes were downed and all the bombers driven off with many damaged. Next a huge carrier raid of 150 Kates and Vals with 36 Zeroes (and a few Oscars from New Ullapool perhaps) descended on the defenders of New Perth. 3 bombers were lost to 1 P-400. A very large number of Vals were damaged (from ground fire?). They went after just about every ground unit at New Perth but curiously, no casulaties were reported.

In the afternoon, the bombers from New Ullapool came back. This time it was the second string (Lillys and Sallys). Only 2 P-39's were left as a CAP but they did manage to drive off the entire attack.

The big show was a shock attack by 50,000 angry LYB's. They manged only 1:2 and wre repulsed with 3200 casualties including 56 infantry squads destroyed and 65 non combat squads destroyed. That should shut them up for a while.
