My RAF Night Bombing Group gained another Sqn

I now have 4 Sqns of Wellingtons and 1 Sqn of RAF LIberators.

These are the only aircraft that will night bomb (RAF strategic bombers)

Keeping the force intact and preserving them has really worked out for me despite my anemic replacement rate

Andy,

can you talk to this more?

I assume the key aspect to a successfuly night bombing group is to develop and preserve very high pilot experience vs simply high ground bombing skill.

thoughts?

It's more because the Liberator GR.III and GR.VI and the Wellington GR.VIII and GR.XIII have aircraft radar. Although skill doesn't hurt.

But surely that wasn't much use in the Far East. Oboe etc were Europe-only in 1942 weren't they?

Thanks JWE. That was the piece I was missing. Can I see that capability in the "planes" screen or do I need to go to the editor (or reference material) for that type of info?

Wirraway_Ace asked a question about night bombing, in-game. The answer was given in terms of aircraft data in-game.

Respectfully suggest irl comments/issues/complaints be posted in the War Room to avoid a hijack of Andy's AAR.

Thank you.

Andy,

sorry for the hijack.  I troll your thread looking for insights into the force structure details/history that I simply don't have.

As I posted in PZB's thread, I've found that even putting daytime fighters on night duty greatly reduces the damage from night bombing.

BTW - JWE - I had been assuming that the radar on those 4E British bombers was naval radar for search. Have I got that messed up? Will it not function as naval radar (in which case I need to make some changes in my PBM)?

Yep. I looked these aircraft varients up on line and they appear to have been equiped with naval search radars.

BTW - JWE - I had been assuming that the radar on those 4E British bombers was naval radar for search. Have I got that messed up? Will it not function as naval radar (in which case I need to make some changes in my PBM)?

No. Not messed up. Aircraft radar looks down and there is a chance (random) that it helps night bombing. There is an editor check box denotes radar as air 2 air capable for night fighters (random). Please do not ask any more on this thread. Won't answer here. Try the War Room. Thanks.

Hmmm today I make it over 300 Japanese Fighters and 100 ish bombers....

What is PZB up to if he has that kind of strength he should be ably to force me right back the only weapon I have to take em on is my B17 forces.......

Gettign worried about the Burma situation I count over 60 units have a funny feeling this offensive is a total wasrte of time he is ready for me and has porbably got a force bigger than my 5000 AV.

I will still try but I need to be carefull

For me the night bombing force has to be kept on night bombing dont mix and match stick with one thing.

Give them plenty of rest and then try to pick good moonlight. Also pick aircraft with good bombloads if it finds the target you want iut to cause damage Wellingtons with 8 x 500lb's are a good match for this as are almost any 4E but Forts can daylight bomb so no need to use them on night bombuign

Make sure the pilots are at least 60 exp (navigation) and 50 on grd bombing.

Dont go to low but dont go high either 10 - 12k seems ok so far.

So far it seems to work but I am experimenting as well

OK so I sent 300 Bombers each with 4 - 8 Bombs say average 6 so 1,800 500lb bombs or 900,000lbs of bombs on a lvl 5 AF

I hit 45 A/B hits and maybe 260 Runway Hits so roughly 1 bomb in 6 hit target not bad from 10 - 15k feet.

PZB sent 50 Sallies each with 4 x 500lb bombs i.e 200 bombs or 100,000 lbs of bombs and got about 40 hits from 19,000 feet

Actually his % was better than mine !!!

But I can probably do more damage and my Heavies at least are more survivable !!!

PZB is not happy with the focus on Burma I dont think he realises just how much I invested to make it all happen

Foul weather normally closes on of my 4 major AF complexes per day its why I have to scatter my Fighter Units. – yesterday was a max effort day because I was going deep against a major AF complexes

Supplies are very hard I have lost over 20 ships out of far more keeping Burma supplied

I have invested a LOT in terms of engineering support and supplies and construction units in order to build Burma de facto most of my AF operates out of AF complexes that are on the rail line because I cannot sustain them further forward when I tried my Mountain Corps went totally out of supply despite my investment in infrastructure

De facto I am also 3 years ahead of schedule as he never took Akyab or Myktina which gave me invaluable forward air heads

I don’t think he realizes how much I have invested in this theatre to make it possible and even then it only really kicked off after the end of the Monsoon in mid September and come mid May the supply net will shut down despite my investment so the campaigning season in Burma UNLESS I have Rangoon or another big port on the rail net by then is narrow

The player who invaded the bulk of Australia as the Japanese is unhappy that the Allies are stronger than they were historically in Burma?

Gettign worried about the Burma situation I count over 60 units have a funny feeling this offensive is a total wasrte of time he is ready for me and has porbably got a force bigger than my 5000 AV.

I will still try but I need to be carefull

If he has more than 5000 AV there, wasn't you campaign already a success in terms of your overall strategy? You just need to keep them there to succeed in openning other opportunities.

I also am a China Theatre hater. At least with the later patches, I can hunker down in defensible terrain, move my reserves around to stop his offensives, and spend the rest of my time in more enjoyable and exciting theatres such as NORPAC. The campaign for Adak is what keeps me interested in this game.

OK interesting turn.

My leading elements reached Mandalay stopping PZB's movement because I control the hex side.

He has a big stack coming from the south.

I will need to try and attack at Shwebo soon as my supply status is in the red and gettiong worse.

I cannot sustain this size of army for long my calculations did not account for PZB's contiunual interdiction of Chittagong.

He is hitting me hard all the way

OK longer update on position in Burma.

PZB has about 1500 AV at Schwebo and 1500 at Mandalay

As he has not build up either base he is struggling for supply I know this because he told me !!!

Unfortunately XV Corps is also really struggling and if PZB plays it canny he could cut me off so a large proportion of my force needs to go NW back over the river.

I cannot sustain 2 Corps in Burma in 42 its that simple.

Burma Corps is low on supplies but by switiching over all the C47's to maintain Bur Corps I can get them into the white for a day or two to attack.

Yesterday we both lost 40 aircraft so PZB has clearly finally swithched tactics to air attrition which is a battle I cannot win.

I can sustain these losses for about 6 days then I will have to withdraw....

Tomorrow a full scale effort is ordered to bomb Schwebo back to the stone age I will hit them for at least one more day then I will try an attack.

p.s. defacto I have already achieved my objective in this theatre by securing Katha - Schwebo and some attrition is just icing on the cake.

Without Rangoon XV Corps needs towithdraw toi India before the monsoon as I will not be able to sustain a full mechanised Corps in Burma overland during the monsoon.

More engineers are ont he way to accelerate builing up all the forward bases in Assam clearly I will need a deeper transportation infrastructure before thre 43 campaign season.

I will add more later XV Corps Attack somehow turned into a fiasco Shock attack not sure how I think a Tank Regt must have crossed the river at the same time...

Burma Corps supported by 10th AF, 225 and 221 Group managed to take Shwebo.

BUT my Air force looks bad I lost 80 aircraft in the last two days I now suspect I have lost another 50 today thats not sustainable.

Even though I have 6 months untilthe monsoon I think I may have to accept what i have and sit back.

I doubt I will be able to push on

I have more or less decided that XV Corps and most of its Divs will need to pull out of Burma and back to India I cannot sustain them from Assam alone and PZB has interdicted most of the Coastal supply axis.

More time needs to be invested building upt he infrastructure and getting a decent supply dump at Schwebo sorted.

No real choice remains.

Time to close down the offensive and pull back.

Now the trick is to keep PZB in tyhe dark while I do so
