My problem is that the basin in Burma is clear terrain, if it was jungle I could defend with 1 hand and 4 fingers tied to my back as terrain modifiers are extremely powerful in AE.

True, but that makes counterattacking easier. And Japan is going to counterattack. Right?

quote:

- More substantial reinforcements are held in Java, but I can't move this and one div is still rebuilding.

Why not? North-Western Australia is not in Allied hands yet, so any attack on Java would have to be supplied from India. Leave there only token forces, for fortification building. After battle in Burma there will be many units needing rebuilding, so Java will be perfect place for them.
Speaking of "rebuilding". IIRC PP cost of unit is based on AV, and there was some tough battles in China. Aren't there some beaten Division, which is like 60% cheaper? Good candidate for putting it in Philippines, and getting garrison from Manila to Burma.

As you remember from the conflict beginning, ZEROs are pretty poor in escort role. But since Shwebo is now in Allied hands... SWEEP LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW!
How many Japan units are there flying CAP over "cluster bases"? Numbers are pretty good, and I think you get better results, if you put your priorities right. If you remember your unescorted bomber raids, which met enemy CAP, and got only minimum losses. I bet it was, because CAP was far too high, and couldn't get to bombers in time. So it would be probably better to put all fighters at 12000-14000. Maybe except OSCARs, which could get higher, because of poor armament.
After all in A2A Allies lose 1-2 fighters per engagement, while bombers lose 2-4, and get several damaged planes. I would exchange 1 one-engine fighter shot down, for 2 two/four-engine bomber shot down anytime.

In another thread the supply cap formula was given as:

Baseline x (Airfield + Port + 1/3Forts)

Mind you that is the maximum per day. How many days per week a base is eligible to draw supply depends upon how far away it is from the base trying to send supplies.

Ok, thx for the correction Witpqs about the fort value. Still overall advice is if u gona supply 10 divs in middle of Burma u need those bases build up for enough supply draw to take place.

Rasmus

/highjack off

EDIT::: Just done a test. The formular that Witpqs descrbes might be intended, but it doesnt seem to quite work like that.
Had a base on a trail with 1 AF have 100 per day, 2 AF 200 and 2 AF+ 1 fort level it rose too 300 so apparently 1 fort level gives as much as 1 AF level. Either that or some thing is up with the way fractions are rounded up or the formular in general. Will bug report

2nd EDIT::: Programmers just confirmed that its NOT 1/3 fort but that they count as much as a AF or port level.

Thanx for the input and advice guys

Obviously I'm fighting the maestro of ground combat and without learning the changes from WitP properly I'm constantly struggling.
It's very possible that many of the results and mechanics are intended while others may be less so.

My experience is that I have never had problems supplying any base in Burma - except Shwebo.
As you may remember Andy attacked Shwebo and we counterattacked him and drove him out. This worked because I moved my fully supplied troops from Mandalay (a size 2 AF).
- Shwebo was on the other side of a river in a clear hex so it has never been the intention to defend it; that Andy takes it isn't a disaster - that I could't prevent his "stack" from
moving into Mandalay wasn't good and the fact that our troops in Shwebo didn't get supplies despite me using all Jap transports to airlift was another.

What I never has understood is the supply rules that apply for bases don't apply for other open hexes.
- I always thought that supply flow in the middle of a jungle 4-5 hexes from any friendly base without any roads would be very very low.
This was before my experiences in China and I have mentioned it to Andy without him recognizing the problem!?

Another misconception I've had was that any base connected to a main road and railroad would be able to receive supplies.
- Cant you just run trains in, dump the supplies in an Ad-Hoc Army Supply Dump like they did in any battlefield during WW2?

The ability of transports to drop fuel, food, water and ammo to an Army operating on its own should at most be able to provide 10-20% of the minimum it required.
For those of us that played Steel Panther we all remember how tanks and vehicles broke down in rought terrain; driving all out in a jungle with 1500 vehicles without a road
would require that a road was constucted and even then breakdowns and vulnerability to air attacks would in the end stop everything.
- What do you do when a tank breaks down on the only trial - road in the middle of a jungle?

All these "imaginations" of mine obviously has very little to do with the world of AE so I just have to learn and adapt.
Learning the hard way in a critical battle is very frustrating and may potentially give Andy a valuable advantage - but rest assured he will never be able to repeat these stunts!!!

So from now on I'll build on our experiences and try to contain the enemy "elephant".
We got vastly more experienced troops, more supplies, more aircraft and better pilots.
Within 2 turns we will launch our first assault in Mandalay with ca 3000 AV - if Andy don't have enough supplies I'll chase him all the way back to Scotland, invade his house, chase his dog and burn his car!!

Here's an Imperial Morale Booster Picture

Hi PzB,

Good sport, chin high and go kick ass!
Like ur attitude.

Note that Monsoon doesnt apply in China(or most of it) so the base supply draw rules are different.
No one said it had to be easy....

Kind regards,

Rasmus

PzB,

The only thing really weird (and IMO wrong) is that a unit in a base can only be supplied by that base. A unit not in a base can be supplied by any base within range. Some other stuff could be tweaked but that one is (IMO) the biggest issue right now.

Walloc got a correction on the formula that I read in some other thread. It actually is:

Baseline x (Airfield + Port + Forts) {not 1/3Forts}

EDIT: Oops - didn't see Walloc's edit above until I already posted.

Thx Walloc, war is he11 as they say
- I'm basically OK in China now after I stepped up supply convoys 500%....

According to Andy there are limitations to how much the old WitP ground combat model can be tweaked.
So I guess we have to accept that there will be some flaws and adapt to them.

Think most of the challenges can be tested out in Burma and Oz regions though, so the learning curve shouldn't be
too steep from now on and in!

Air Combat

I'm leaving out all air attacks in Oz and China. In Oz we keep Tennant Creek at 100 AF damage.
As long as we can keep this up it will be hard for Andy to continue his advance.

This was a very good turn in the air; our troops marching into Mandalay were bombed silly by 250 enemy bombers
but it's not so easy to sweep a non base hex even though that's what many fighters did. We still managed to put up a good
show against the sweepers and caught many vulnerable bombers without an escort.

When some Zero's swept Shwebo the P-40s and Spits fell down like flies; our pilots are so much better than the Allies that we
actually can stand and fight sweep missions at a high cost. Turn the tables and we have a very strong hand.

Patience Young Padawan. Time is still on Empire side.
Those units at Shwebo will probably cross river, thus triggering assault.

Japan posses all advantages. It defends in bases, so can recover units quicker, can share support, have fortifications, and shorter supply lines.
Any additional units for Allies can only be flown to Shwebo, or must march through jungle, which takes month.
The goal should be to surround, and destroy those units at Mandalay. No reason to repel, and chase anyone. I would consider anything short of destroying 5 Allied Divisions, a wasted opportunity.
MAKE FALL OF SINGAPORE PALE IN COMPARISON!

+1 to inquisitor's advice. Prevent yourself from being cut off, then attack when you are sure you're ready. The results of the first attack will be CRITICAL for the entire war, IMHO. Also, keep trying to cut Andy off with small units.

Another interesting turn; interesting and different!

The challenge with surrounding the enemy troops is that a strong LCU will cut of any tank regiment we send to surround them with.
- Allied airpower can crush a regiment in one attack in the open and we've seen how impossible it is for us to supply our troops north of Mandalay.

If Andy marches his troops from Shwebo to Mandalay he may overextend and not be able to supply his troops, so I'm not sure he'll do so.
Maybe he will march his Mandalay Army into Shwebo instead? This would mean admitting defeat for now.

If he does combine his Armies in Mandalay we will face ~5000 AV there instead of ~3000 AV.
So shouldn't we attack as soon as possible and try to rout the troops in Mandalay?
- If this succeeds we have the option of marching over the river and shock attack the weakened enemy army there when we have built our strength.
In a week we got the 8th Area Army, the 11th division and a regiment arriving in Rangoon.

A defeat of the enemy in Shwebo means he will retreat back towards Myitykina and it should be possible to pursue even thought I don't think this will be doable
because of supply problems and defensive terrain modifiers in the jungle.

It's a long way to victory, so let's see what the next days will bring!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 20, 42

Surface Combat

Right, talk about bad luck; I've been planning a KB sortie into the Central Pacific and what happens?
An Allied AMC runs into our supply train by chance...perfect, the only advantage is that Andy will stop all convoys from the East Coast for
an undetermined time to come....

Both TFs avoided combat, the AMC is probably carrying troops.

Some turn!!!

Air Combat

Air losses raged for hours literally speaking.
- We did well today; our CAP setup is working and despite the heavy sweeps over Mandalay we kept fighters in the air.
Ca 15 P-38's down as well as 8 Wellingtons, we caught an entire wing and downed them in the PM turn.

Total air losses is reported as 107 Allied and 73 Jap.
Another 34 Tojo's down and the pool is down to the last 20 but I have upgraded another training unit (24 ac) and also got another
42 moving in from a quiet sector.

The losses we suffer in the air is very well distributed among our fighter units so it's possible to maintain them in the field.
A service rating of 1 for the Tojo is worth the world. The rest turn we got last turn was enough to repair most of them.

According to Andy he canno't compete with our frame productio and is now feeling the twinge as he's starting to run low on fighter ac.

Ground Combat

Our assault achieved a 1-1 odds with ca 1440 to 970 AV.
- Annoying cause that was rather close and we suffered 13k casualties to the Allies 4k.
Still, most losses were damaged and not destroyed and we posess good supply within the basin which will allow us to repair damage.

I'm going to continue bombarding the Allied troops in Mandalay and keep a close eye on how many troops Andy send in or move out.
Tempted to try another (deliberate) attack in some time to see if he's running out of supplies.

Feel that we at least have contained the Allied offensive; Andy will have to continue using his air force if he wants to achieve further results,
and that's something I hope he won't be able to. In the meanwhile I'm going to gather our strength; the 2 divisions routed in Shwebo didn't participate in
today's attack and they are still at 70% strength. In addition to the reinforcements I mentioned in the last post I'm also preparing to send in another
2 divisions, 2 regiments as well as a couple of minor units.

If we can keep Burma safe until mid 43 we have bought time!

A more detailed ac loss overview; Andy says he lost ca 40 P40's and less of the other models.
- I still have to shoot them all down, so that's ok I guess

Hi PzB,

nice AAR. I am defending Burma just now, so I have small suggestions:

1. Hold Burma at all costs! It is not a question of Rangoon or advanced 4E bases, but commitment of Allied troops. If Andy wants to use them elsewhere, it takes 3 months of marching! Considering your situation in China, the Burma road must be closed as long as possible. As you see, there no problem in AE to move supply. Imagine 20 fully supplied Chinese Corps with 729 AS each...
2. Move in all troops from Java and Sumatra. Allied could not attack there - thay can unload troops, but not supply them.
3. Not sure why you have divisions still split in regiments. If you rebuild division from regiments, you have typically higher AS about 50-100!
4. Are you using Thai Army in Burma? If not, why?
5. Be carefull with bombardment - there are few mines in AE compared to WITP, but very effective and deadly.

A double update.

The presence if Australian divisions in Burma is ironic; as long as Oz is invaded I think we should have made a house rule
saying that all Oz units should be sent home to fight there.

Hi Tomasek and welcome to the thread

Yes, holding Burma is important in a lot of way; can probably put up a "10 Most Important Reasons to defend Burmna" list!
You start the war with many single regiments; I never split them up myself. Maybe I can combine a division or two, but it will take a lot of work to bring
all the piece together. I did bring together three A, B and C regiments of a Japanese Army division in China today; when I did so there was no rebuild option even though
all parts were together and in the same mode

Thai Army didn't historically move much outside of Thailand; I am using it to garrison rear area bases south of Rangoon to Malaya and Saigon.
They require a lot of time to train and become even somewhat usefull as rear area garrisons. Can't see any combat value in them at all, Bangkok defences is made up around a Jap Guards regiment,

Bombardments are less effective now, my biggest concern is now coastal guns; still not hit many mines but I've noticed how potent they are!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 22, 42

Air Combat

Andy sends in his medium bombers by mistake and we gun down 30 Blenheims et al.
Some 47 Allied ac lost to just a few jap. Andy said he tried a long range 4E attack with P-38's on escort; obviously
this sortie never got off the ground.

To my annoyance lots of our ground attacks in Mandalay goes after a couple of gun regiments.

Well done! You've turned Andy back and are winning the air attrition fight. Once he leaves Mandalay, what are your plans? How about a linear defense following the Irawaddy with the bulk of the army in Meiktila? Cover each hex in regimental strength and your main force in Meiktila should be able to use the road net to beat any move by Andy to the punch. You also force him to attack over the river and in a week or so your troops will have lvl 2 forts even in the clear hexes.

That said, knocking Andy back to Scotland is better if you have the combat power to do it.

As for re-combining, make sure the units all have the same HQ. Even then sometimes other elements that haven't arrived yet as reinforcements prevent combination.

Thx Cribtop, only to bad that we didn't get a better adjusted AV at Mandalay but indeed Andy withdrew!
Andy has moved 20 units west of Shwebo and I've started moving our most depleted LCU's to rear bases.

Much as you sugges I'm already moving strong forces to Meiktila as I have also seen that we can support both Mandalay and Magwe from here.
I'm not sure its worth leaving a small force in the clear hexes in the river bend; if Andy comes over in force we will only achieve being routed.
- We got 3 forts in Mandalay and 5 or 6 on Magwe; I'm thinking about leaving 1250 AV in Mandalay, 1000 in Magwe, 1000 in Meiktila and a reserve at Rangoon.

For now I will rest our troops and bring our reinforcements in; let's see what Andy is up to until we are ready to start an irresistable offensive!

I found that one of the 3 divisional regiments had upgraded some equipment so now I have to reinforce and upgrade the other 2 before they can combine.
Have look at other divisional units I can recombine; found quite a few in China and one in Burma. The others either have units still not arrived or units dispersed over the 7 seas...

In general it looks like Japan has burned most of its offensive power in the Pacific and we have reached a stalemate period that will last until mid to late 43.
- Central Pacific; stable
Local offensives still in progress.
- Southern Pacific; stable
Local strikes and counterattacks on the agenda
- Australia; stable
How long should we stay, should we pull back early or hold until driven out?
- SRA; stable
- Burma; stabilized
- China; stable
I will halt offensive operations in China for some time; need to rest our units, restock supplies, rethink strategy and redeploy forces accordingly.
Should we continue an offensive in 43 and if so, what should be our tactical and strategic goals and how many troops will such an offensive require is the questions I will have to consider

In 4 days the Musashi arrives.

I did bring together three A, B and C regiments of a Japanese Army division in China today; when I did so there was no rebuild option even though
all parts were together and in the same mode

probably because they had different equipment due to one or more of them having upgraded some of their devices. It´s the same as with aircraft, if you split a squadron and upgrade each part to a different aircraft you can´t combine the parts again until all fly the same ac.

That's correct Castor, I made a comment about this in the last post.
Seems like one of the regiments have an upgraded light tank type as well as 47mm AT guns instead of 37mm.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 25, 42

Surface Combat

A series of surface engagement near the Marquise Islands.
- First a Squadron of 5 old destroyers engage a superior force of 5 US fleet destroyers plus the
large French destroyer La Triomphant. The first engagement is indecisive but a follow up engagement at Nuku Hiva
is more deadly as the Allied force achieves surprise. La Triomphant start landing 138mm shells on 2 of our ships and
the situation starts to get critical; just then a lucky shell ignites the magazine aboard the French ship and
she goes straight down! The two sides then continue an even duel without anyone getting the upper hand.

In the third engagement the Kamikaze is hit again and eventually sinks later in the day as flooding continous to increase.
In return the Reid is shot up badly. Suddenly 2 US destroyers collide and the USS Case is reported sunk.

Finally our main force, 4 destroyers led by the light cruiser Yubari engage 3 US fleet destroyers in an indecisive
engagement. Tomorrow the Yubari force will sweep the waters and attempt to drive off the remaining US ships.

Total casualties in these engagement;
Japan: 1 small Jap destroyer sunk and one moderately damaged.
Allies: 1 large French destroyer sunk, 1 US destroyer sunk and 1 US destroyer moderately damaged.

Today brings jolly good news; The KB Strikes Gold!
- The convoy we pursued yesterday didn't scatter and got the hammer.

We damaged 1 KV, 3 destroyers and sank / torched 6 fleet oilers, 1 tanker and 5 cargo ships!

The especially good news is that the ships were mostly loaded fleet oilers!!
We have already sunk a large number of Allied tankers (almost 50) and I think Andy is short and therfore using
cargo ships and fleet oiler to move his fuel!

Listened to Steve Jone's Fire & Gasoline as the bombers did their work.
Not sure Andy appreciated the reference, no comments back today.

Damaged:

KV Freesia, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Patterson, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Porter, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Crosby, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Yoikes! I think you are going to have a lot of environmental protests after that one!

That gives me an idea - perhaps I should put Andy Mac in touch with BP about how to move oil across water ...

Seriously though, yours is the first AAR I have seen with a raid that close to the map edge and clearly it was a smart play. Well done!
Looks like North America is going to discover sushi and sake sooner rather than later.

Congrats, more to the point though - that you've sunk 50 of his tankers. That has got to be hurting. I hate losing my tankers.

Oil disperses well in the middle of the ocean, natural product
- As you remember my replenishment fleet ran into an AMC and I thought the game was up.
Obviously Andy had a TF in the area and his evasive action just didn't work.

Earlier Andy has escaped by using the "maps edge exits" and I had a feeling he might try for that again.
A delay in the Allied buildup of fuel will be a welcome bonus; anyone know how many fleet oilers like this the Allies got in 42?

YES Al, I also hate loosing my tankers!
Talk about taking the fun out of things...guess that's payback for invading Kiwi land

Allied tankers sunk

48 tankers and fleet oilers on the tracker list; the last 5 are not included as I didn't observe them sink but we all know what happens to fully loaded and burning tankers in AE...

Sorry mate. Don't worry Karma will take strips out of me, but I just couldn't resist. Or maybe it is karma ON YOU for invading Kiwi land - very ungentlemanly ;-P

Christchurch will be renamed Geisha City for that offense Al!

No sign of more enemy ships in the Pacific today so I'm ordering the fleet to move south to coordinate an operation
in the Marquesas.

Our surface forces in that area successfully moved on the enemy transports and shot up 2 troop ships and a seaplane tender.
- Andy probably sent his reserves against us as we moved south, cause in the afternoon our force (now almost without
ammo) met 2 enemy light cruisers and 4 destroyers. We lost a destroyer to a torpedo hit and the Yubari took a 6" shell.
Even though outmatched we fought back well and scored hits on 3 enemy ships before making good our escape.

Good job, PzB.  This warfare in the depths of his rear must be hurting him as much as would warship losses or a lost battle directly.  It would be crucial to know how much TK, AO and fuel transport capacity Andy has left to supply his forces in OZ.  Without plenty of supplies, you might hold out at Darwin much longer and Andy might have to take it from the sea.  Maybe you could even bag a couple of LCUs near Tenant creek now.

I think you have the playbook in your hand in OZ and CentPac presently due to your counterstrikes.  Though not safely, and you should probably devise a bigger plan or feint to threaten some of Andy's strategically important points and force him to redesignate forces to defense/reconquest that might be presently trained on your important points, Darwin, Port Moresby, the Solomons, the Gilberts, the Marinas...

The naval campaign in SW and CentPac is very promising, and will do long term damage.  Andy is probably rerouting convoys to longest routes, and sending his USN assets to catch your KB.  Do you have an idea of the whereabouts of his CV?  Ready to set up a trap, or would you rather want him to chase goose and burn his fuel while he cannot himself use his CVs for any offensive action against your shipping/bases?  My feeling is you should devise a trap since you might still be numerically stronger in CV air, and number of CVs -- chances won't get any better from now on.  And from so many other AARs I kind of get the impression to hope for intervention of land bases air later in the war as Japanese is futile and won't make up for the increase in USN numbers and quality (see Spruance and Stoneage, Canorebel and others).  This is the time where a won CV battle may gain you another 6 months of initiative for offensive actions and raiding.

In Burma, I can only congratulate to your successful air campaign.  Stand and fight was definitely the right choice.  The supply model in town/out of town really should be looked at, this seems quite gamey.  You should be able to supply forces at a railhead for a short while, even if it would burn supplies much faster.   Your ground losses sound horrible on first look, but compared to the later battles or European theater, what are 25.000 casualties?  How long will it take to get the units back up to strength, and experience?  When can you start counterattacking Andys LCUs?
Inquisitor has probably the same aggressive spirit that I do, but I kind of am governed by the German experience or the CSA problems of the Civil War: Enemy much superior in number, so a "tactical victory" is a "strategical defeat".  It would be great if you tried to cut off Andy's stacks at Mandalay and Schwebo and tried to bag a couple of divisions.  That would be the better approach to gain safety for another year or more.  And it would hopefully then free a division or two for other theaters, that may soon need them.  Or even for raids of your own.

Finally, what are your plans for dealing with the RN in the theater?  Any pay-back plans for the recent BB losses near Ceylon?
