I'm thinking of buying this game, however I have a couple of questions before I take the plunge. Firstly, how does DC compare to the Decisive Battles series (BiN, BiIt, KP)? I'm a player of these and am looking for something similar. Secondly - DC or Advanced Tactics? I'd usually go for the more modern version (usually more polished, better AI etc) however AT seems to have more re-playability.

Ta much.

SSG's games, the later ones, can no longer be played intuitively. In order to win, especially against a human but also against the AI, you have to do a lot of odds-figuring. It is much more gamey. You can no longer play without taking the odds into account. In this way their games have become true games closely bound to the rules. There is less of this in Decisive Campaigns although the detail is there. In SSG's games you must take into account the effects of terrain & hexsides & numbers of attackers & constantly run the odds. In DC you don't really need to do this. It is much less gamey in this regard. I am not running down SSG's games at all & they are very up front about this aspect of their games.

I can't really talk about the re-playability. Why not buy both AT & DC? I think you would probably be very busy for a long-time with DC though.

SSG's latest only offer a few scenarios too.

Hope this helps.

Buy both! Comedian

You're right about the calculate the odds stuff - it does get mind bending. You say DC isn't like this, why? How do you work out your chances of attack success? I dont want a definitive "yes you will win" but I like to know whether I stand a chance. No general would sling troops into combat without some idea of the outcome. You mentioned terrain, is this not taken into account in DC?

In SSG's battles odds are calculated & displayed before pulling the trigger on cambat. There is not a similar odds display in DC or at least I have not used one or seen one. There are detailed combat reports after combat. Neither the game manual nor the game lists or displays a lot of odds tables like SSG's games.

This is NOT a game of overruns like SSG's games. You will see why when you play. I think it happens to depict blitzkrieg much better but this is only my opinion.

If you really like the idea of knowing odds in a gamey way while playing then SSG's game engine may be the best one for you. Personally I find it mind-numbing & way too much for my feeble brain. You are probably a lot smarter than I & will swim in the odds like a fish in water. Have at it. Meanwhile, it is back to Case White. I have limited time & energy for gaming & I think the odds-figuring gets in the way & is not very realistic but I am weird this way...

Why not buy both an SSG game & DC???

My swimming is more brick like and my pbem games indicate that my intelligence is similar! No I don't particularly like knowing the odds as this then favours the "number cruncher" (again my pbem games are testiment to this ) but there must be some way you decide what a viable attack is before you commit troops. Do you base your attacks on whether you have more troops, better troops, colour of tank, wind direction, or what.

I know there is no demo (plain daft decision if you ask me) but is the manual available so I can see how it plays?

DC has much better interface, AI and polish, but AT has really a lot of great custom made scenarios, whether you want WW2, WW1, Civil War, fantasy or ancient Rome... and new ones are created still. I allows you to play on different scale levels etc etc. If I were to choose just one of those two games, and wanted a lot of replayability I would choose AT.
