Hi everyone,
I've thought about starting an AAR for very long now (even before I had a game going ;) ) and as my Australian friend and mortal enemy in my game has started one I thought it would only be good for the readers to have an insight into the Japanese operations as well!

-----no "Itdepends" beyond this point----

First of all, a total maniac and newbie was given command of the Japanese side - he doesn't know much about the game as of yet, but he is certainly eager to perform well in the war that was forced upon him and his emperor by the warmongering Allies!
any advice that you will give me is more than welcome - can't wait to get more than just my own oppinion on my kamikaze operations....most of you will, no doubt about that, shake their heads when they see what I do and plan to do

oh and before I start - please forgive my many mistakes in English - it's far from being perfect - but I come from Austria!

now to the campaign:
this is my first game as Japanese (got another one going at the same stage) so it's basically a "try and error" process! although I read a lot of AARs - it's most difficult to reproduce some complex operations - especially timing, which is of course as always in war - the crucial point!
I will add screenshots as soon as I have time to work on them.....unfortunately I still haven't figured out on how to get the hexes away - because the way I've been told to do so only gets me stronger blue and green line - it doesn't make them go away

the overall strategy is:

China:
clear up the south and threaten Changsha and the souther way to Chunking with the troops available in that sector while the main thrust will come over Sian and the nothern route - full PP has been paid for all available artillery out of the restricted areas - not knowing how much infantry I could relocate from there in order to not "undergarrison" these areas I didn't take any so far!
I also plan to use 2 tank regiments to make a deep thrust into northern China and take all the ressource centres there - it's a long way - but I hope it's worth it!- not sure if I can maintain adequate supply lines though - we'll see...

Phillipines:
North:
use the 4th Division and all assets from Pescadores to reinforce the initial landing parties and prepare them all for a long siege of Bataan already - I have no rush in taking this position, because once I've taken Manila and only Bataan remains I have little to worry about - supplies will run out eventually for the Americans, as I know from my game as Allied that aroudn 45000 supplies is pretty much the maximum my opponent can get there (I hope I'm not totally wrong there already )
South: landing at Davao to take that large Island - one detachment of Legaspi will prep for Cebu and the main force that was destined for "Kuching" will move to take San Jose and Taytay as another one will take Puerto Princesa in the same turn as Taytay is being attacked! (so much for the plan)

Covering forces for Phillipines and Eastern DEI:
3rd Carrier Division: starting with CVL Ryujo and Taiyo until CVL Zuiho and CVE Hosho have arrived from Japan with their upgraded airplanes - then 3rd CarDiv will consist of both CVLs while the 4th CarDiv will use both CVEs (mainly to cover landing ops), 2 Mobile SCTFs both consisting of 2BBs plus DDs and 2 CruiserDivs

Malaya and Borneo:
initially I planned for the Mersing Gambit with the reinforcements for Singora and the 33rd Division from Japan but I decided against it due to several reasons as discussed with my opponent -
the Imperial Guards Division was sent via rail to Malaya with supporting assets
I plan on first taking Malaya and then attack Sumatra with Java being the last nut to crack - I do plan on letting the Allies produce fuel at Palembang for me as long as possible as no tanker will leave Palembang and survive - to achieve this Sinkawang is to be taken and 2 squadrons of Nells are to be stationed there
Miri, Beaufort and Jesselton will fall in the first wave, with the rest of the bases taken via land - these units will then take the eastern side of Borneo with the 3rd wave-objective being Balikpapan!

Solomons-Fiji-New Guinea-Australia:

4 AmphibTFs will take the northern side of NG as planned by the AI - to make my opponent believe I do all the way it's supposed to happen
all forces will be gathered to the attack Rabaul, Kavieng and Shortlands simultanously - supported by one Mobile TF with 2 BBs and one Cruised Div (Bombardement) - long range cover will be given by Kido Butai
operation will commence as soon as Paratroops have been relocated to Truk to deal with any possible escape routs!

Fiji/New Caledonia is the main target - although I expect that my enemy will start to build up there ASAP - it's SOP to do that - so I'm unsure whether I already posess the necessary skills to conduct these operations - but I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it
Tarawa, Ocean Island and Nauru island will fall in the first wave while Baker Island and Canton are targets for second and 3rd wave!

Wake will fall as soon as the cover forces for Rabaul are available: mainly 1 Mobile TF to conduct a bombardement there!

I have no ambition in Australia whatsover except for submarine operations

DEI:
my most ambititous plan is in the DEI area:
1st Wave: Ternate, Manado - as already given my AI - cover forces as already mentioned
2nd Wave: Ambon (A strong enemy position so more units will be needed) and maybe Kendari
3rd Wave Koepang - a AirFlotilla will be dispatched for this to make Koepang a strong base to interdict any evacutaions to Darwin from Java - Perth is out of reach for me but I have dispatched 2 LR-subs with Glens to maybe sink a few of his transports there

so much for the plan - any ideas, suggestions already? - am I as brain-frozen as I feared I'd be?

screens will follow soon - having served in the military I know that a good map is worth 3 hours briefing by your CO!

Best Regards,

Roland

Hi Ramón,

great to have you on board! - I'll get some screens right away
and of course I should mention here that Ramón was very helpful in getting me started with my economy....otherwise I probably would have run out of supplies by mid 42 - so thanks again for that

here the first 2 screens for China:

it should be said that my first objective is to clear the railway lines from Chinese troops and then move on to the targets as indicated in the picture - sorry for the terrible arrows....but I only have "Paint" to work on them

thanks for your understanding

here the southern part

1st Wave: RED
2nd Wave: YELLOW
3rd Wave: BLACK

do you think that this is at all possible?

I only encircled Changsha as the main objective for the campaign - I do not expect to capture it in the 3rd Wave already - but the siege will begin soon as you can see that my troops are already one hex away - I am unsure if I should have waited with these troops to help Ichang - well - I'm learning so it might have been a major mistake which unfortunately cannot be reversed!

here the Malayan Peninsular

the Mobile TF is 6 Hexes away from Singakawang - I forgot to have it stay there as it was already covering the landing - let's see if I made a mistake (wouldn't be my first one :D)

my greatest worry is the invasion of Palembang when it comes - as I've read in many AArs that the refineries and the oil take a lot of damage even if your invasion force is highly superior - any hints on how to avoid that? - intensive ground bombardement?

here to the Phillipines:

Northern half:
invasions at Puerto Princesa and Taytay are being planned to take place simultanously:
invasions of San Jose and Cebu as well - unsure whether the forces for will be enough to take both - Cebu force will be the highly trained detachment from the Legaspi landing and the landing at San Jose will be conducted by the forces formely planning on taking Kuching minus the 2nd Recon Reg which will take Taytay

4th Division as well as 65 Bde have been landed at Aparri as 3 entire AKs with over 1500 men aboard have been sunk by Dutch subs and PT boats while trying to land the 65th at Vigan - not sure, but my ASW doesn't seem to be as effective as in my other game as Japanese and my SCTF with 1 CL and 7 DDs only sank 3 PTs while the others broke through and sank 2 AKs
losses are replaceable though - I hope - mostly staying positive

souther half of the Phillippines (?):

1st Wave took the northern parts of the Island of Borneo
2nd Wave in Yellow (units already prepping for these landings)
3rd Wave in Black - reinforcements will be needed for this operation as well as heavy cover with at least on Mobile TF and probably both the 3rd and 4th Carrier Divisions!

Davao landing was successful 3 Infantry units and 1 Tank Reg will try to take this Island

Rabaul Area:

northern parts of New Guinea have already been taken in the first wave

Rabaul will be attacked by ATF-2 consisting of 2 AmphibForces, 2 ASW TFs, 1 Mobile TF for heavy cover and one Bombardement TF consisting of 2nd Cruiser Div (former Guam Cover Force), long range cover will be provided by Kido Butai
ATF-1 will take Kavieng
ATF 3-1 will take Greene Island
ATF 3-2 will take Shortlands

all landings are supposed to happend at the same time (still having troubles with figuring out how much my ships will move and when - so I'll probably mess up anyway )

furthermore both Naval parachute units have been transported from Formosa to Truk, 1 day for them to arrive, as soon as they unloaded and in combat mode the attacks will begin with landings on all marked positions to give the enemy forces to place to retreat to! for this taks 2 Transport detachments have been moved to Truk as well as both Mavis-Transport groups - which will later on conduct Commando raids in the Baker Island-Canton Island area to take all the small atolls with fast parachute raids!
the reinforcemtns of 2nd Raiding Reg have not been assigned yet - I will either use them for commando raids in Buram or in the DEI - that has to be determined yet!

Hey, and good luck on your new game.

I have one question as to your parachute attacks, how are you planning to take all the bases quickly, you've only got 2 units for 5 bases ?

In China your objectives look optimistic, certainly knowing the new garrison constraints, how many forces have you got available for offensive operations ? Otherwise your plans look nice and aggressive, your opponent will be pressed nicely for the coming months.

thanks for dropping me those lines Smeulders,

ad Paratroops: I intend to only garrison Gasmata with one full unit - all the other spots will be taken by parts of my second naval parachute unit - I found out that if you use your Mavis-L then you can drop parts of that unit somewhere - a few troops should to it
I do have a 3rd ParaUnit - the 1st Raiding - but it's for the Baker Island/Canton Island region - so it's on the way via airlift from Mainland Japan to Jaluit - where I will employ my Mavis as soon as they've done their job at Rabaul....(at least that's the plan )

as for China: I agree with you that my plan is a very optimistic - for example I do not yet know on what to do with the hords of Chinese once they've taken Ichang (which I suspect will not hold on for more than 4 or 5 turns at most....but by then I should have some troops available (hopefully) from the strategic movement from restricted regions!

in DEI many things will depend on when and how I find POW and Repulse as well as the Houston TF - I already encoutered that one 2 turns ago - put 2 torps into Chicago and one in Boise - but I'm afraid that they were either belt armour hits or didn't cause major damage... - I do have 2 small CarDivs and 3 Mobile TFs to cover operations but I am unsure how a 2 Japanese BBs will do against 2 RN BBs - I haven't seen that yet

here is what I forgot in my other posts - the overall map:
sorry for the poor drawings - I know they're not easily identified :D

a few short updates from 18th December:

Most importantly - the Japanese Empire has a new Minister of War: Hillasan - a friend of mine agreed on taking over the part of looking after the Home Islands, the convoy system, training of new troops and the economy - thanks very much for joining me - I will keep command over all offensive operations!

18th December:
what happened? - my plan worked - knowing that Singakawang was very exposed I knew that it would present a juicy target for bombardement - thus the 1st Mobile TF consisting of BBs Haruna and Kongo with 2 CAs, 1 CL, and 6 DDs was ordered to guard it as long as it was deemed necessary - BUT - I had the idea, as soon as my SigInt (quite surprisingly - yes - but it's the only explanation because I only saw a TF appear out of nowhere on which I had no closer information - just showed a TF) detected radiochatter I decided to move my Cover force north, hoping that this would be a bombardement force - probably consisting of some Dutch CLs- and then double back to intercept at Full Speed! - unfortunately my ships reached the position to intercept at Day - not during Night - as a Night engagement would have been more favourable for me I think.....
and what was that force????? - FORCE Z! - reinforced with some Dutch cruisers! - I couldn't believe my eyes as I expected maybe all 3 CLs plus DDs - but there they were - POW and Repulse moving into range of the guns of BB Haruna and Kongo!

I would say, tactically it was a draw - with BB Kongo suffering 26 system damage and one DD 34 Sys - all other ships were only slightely damaged but BB Haruna has expended all ammo - which basically means I have to move to Cam Ranh Bay to resupply
strategically it was a huge success - Force Z has been found - and successfully engaged - a few hits scored at the POW, which didn't really hurt but Repulse looked a little more hurt - now it's up to my opponent whether he's going to retreat them to Colombo to fully repair or if he is content with basic repairs somewhere in Java! (he's only gonna move them to Singapore if he's insane!)

sad part of it:
my Bombers at Singakawang found the ships (only very few) but all missed (probably also my mistake as they were still set at 5000 feet but didn't carry Torps - should have put them onto 10000 - one of my newbie mistakes I guess

here the map after the combat - seems like the TF has split up - maybe a few ships limping home - hopefully my Canoya Squadron will hit next turn! (if they won't nobody would have - I keep saying that to myself )

Hi guys,

sorry for the delay - I've been off the last 2 days...back now....will post some news tomorrow!

Operation "Bonzai tree" (Rabaul) will commence in 2 days
Operation "Rising sun" (Manado, Ternate) should also commence in 2 days

I expect HongKong to fall within a few days.....forts are down to 0 for the second day now...he keeps rebuilding it - thus using up supplies - but I won't shock attack as it costs troops and I'm in no hurry to take HK in particular....

unfortunately Ichang fell this turn - a huge mistake on my part....I honestly admit "I hate China" - I simply have no feeling on how to deal with it...it's basically a learning game in China only for me....but I do hope that this setback will be avenged soon! - the troops I lost is a huge price to pay at this stage of the war - but it's replacable....1 Tank regiment and 1 Division have just been sent by my minister of War to support my efforts- full PP paid!
first priorities are from now on to secure the railway line and then only have one offensive at a time! (a wise suggestion by my minister of War, Stephen!)

Best Wishes,

Roland

some minor calamities this turn - a SCTF with CL Marblehead and 6 DDs moved to Jesselton - my covering Force with 1 CA 1CL and 2 DDs was unable to intercept and so this TF sunk 5 empty AKs - not much harm done - but it will need time that my other ships arrive to transport the next wave to the east of Borneo

my covering force did catch up with MArblehead later and performed terribly.....only 2 hits on Marblehead! :(

Hongkong is still under siege....I honestly have no idea what to do with this....I am attacking and bombarding every single day - maybe I should rest a bit and then start an attack again - any suggestions are welcome, please?

my opponent doesn't give up easily - after I smashed his Force Z - he sent yet another TF with CA Cornwall and at least 2 CLs to bombard Singakawang - my BB TF was at Cam Rang BAy at the time to resupply and I simply forgot about my other Covering Force with 4 CAs - a huge mistake on my part

losses were moderate - 5 planes destroyed on ground, BUT none of my precious pilots lost - planes can be replaced -
I expect the airfields to be fully operational within 3 days again as I have both the necessary engineers and supplies already there!

meanwhile:

-landings at Ternate and Manado took place with almost no losses during unloading

-1st deliberate attack at Wake failed with higher losses for the Allies (200 killed to 100 disabled) - again attack tomorrow

-Rabaul operation to commence in 1 day

-HK still not fallen - my losses are rising (10 destroyed squads this time) so I will rest my troops tomorrow and attack with everything I have the day after

screens soon, when I got the file back from my co-player

22nd December '42

it was early in the morning when the captain of one of my longrange submarines - the I-19 - at first couldn't believe his fortune when he looked through his periscope: a full Carrier Task Force
this was his moment! - there was no time to hesitate - he plotted a course to intercept the Carrier to approach him at a 45 degree angle - but he was detected by an escort ship - the DCs were way off and caused no damage at all - so the Captain tried again - this time he came into a firing position - not a perfect one but well enough to fire 6 torpedoes of which 1 hit the Enterprise midships!

WHAT A DAY FOR THE JAPANESE NAVY - not only is the Enterprise hopefully damaged enough to spend some time in port - but we now also know that at least one CV is in Australia - and I am almost certain that the second one won't be far off - because if our opponent is the least experienced he knows that one lone carrier is target practise for our Kido Butai!

3 more LR-SS have been dispatched and sent on an immediate intercept course to maybe catch the Enterprise either on the way to Sydney (which I think - repairshipyard) or back to Melbourne - if the TF takes the 3rd route to Auckland - well - there are subs there waiting too

LONG LIVE THE JAPANESE SUBS!

to soften up defences and prepare for the deliberate attack tomorrow with rested troops today almost 90 bombers in two waves have been ordered to attack the ground troops at Hong Kong - although I am not in any hurry to take this city as it's not going anywhere - I will make it fall soon - 5 days is the maximum I think he'll be able to hold out now!
