From an optimist's viewpoint it's the dry sandy heat.

Afghanistan, Dixie?

I'm sure he can't say yes.

I'm fairly certain I can

Yes, Afghanistan.

How long? Baghram?

Anyways, regardless. I'm sorry. That's going to be difficult with a wee one on the ground.

That sucks.

As Petraeus said about the sandpit: "Embrace the suck."

You'd need to spin this with an ultracentrifuge to find an optimist's side.

It's not actually too bad. I'm out of the country for about two weeks (no-one can actually give me the exact date I'll be getting home). I'll mostly be based in Cyprus with trips from there to Afghanistan.
Originally I would have been going out there around now anyway, but I swapped with someone else 4 months ago. The phone call this morning telling me I was going on Wednesday was a shock though. Hopefully I'll be able to get some leave when I return home so we can get Josh baptised whilst the old man is home between ships.
There's the added bonus of no ****ty nappies or teething pains for two weeks...

Zu während sie in der Wüste sind, hier ist, denken sie an, was sie nach Hause kommen können.

Ok, so I was being obscure again. Kinda means 'here's what you can come home to after your time in the desert'. Thought a kasekuche needed a bit 'o German to set it off properly. Sorry 'bout that.

You've never smoked good cigars...
I smoked some of the new Cohiba Behike the last days...

Not true. I've had some good Cuban cigars in the past. It's not a bad experience, just one that I prefer less frequently. We all have our preferences, even when exposed to the 'best' of different things, neh?

I prefer my pipe, though keep some good stogies in my humidor for appropriate occasions.

My father used to smoke a pipe. I like the smell of pipe tobacco quite a bit, but I've never tried it myself. Seems like something old people do.

MY father started to smoke pipes when he was 18. I have one, too, but rarely use it. I think I smoked my first one at about 20 or so - but of course, its uncommon...

My comment was a joke, I assure you.

I've been told that one gets over that pretty quickly. Obviously another instance of my brother being a sorry liar.

Stay safe Dixie. Looking forward to your return.

That's the advantage of aging, Onime. You forget what you think you knew. Once forgotten, you pine for it less. Or that's the theory anyways. I don't know how this works in real life. You should PM Steve...

Here's a 1947 Chris Craft. I'm not sure fow well the photo brings it across (iPhone camera nothing fancy) but the thing is in an absolutely magnificently restored condition.

Very pretty! A good friend of mine restored one once back in the day. Gorgeous boats.

This one purports to be an early 20s racing boat. I guess the guy that owns it is running out of time, money or patience restoring it.

This one caught my attention. I'm not sure if the house is currently occupied, but it appears to not only have a boat launch, but a boat launch on rails.

Here's one for Steve (wherever he is at the moment). Its a two-masted somethingorother that our landlocked sailor friend would surely get a kick out of putting through its paces.
