Humm ,, using the same unit in 2 places (airlifted on the same turn) i have to say i find a bit gamey. but all depends on your house rules i suppose.

If there isnt an AF or port at the target hex (or a really tiny one) then i find that AF/Port attacks do very little/nil damage overall. You'd think a tiny airfield would get obliterated, but can't say i have seen that before. 3 x mountains isnt fun but just think what Andy will have to unload if you leave a 1/2 decent unit there for him

. Esp if he's planning on coming back to the same place because of prep points <evil grin>.

Hi PzB,

Just my take on it but I think it was a slight error using the Tk Division at Myitkyina. Tanks are best massed in open terrain (as you know) so using them on trails and in jungles isn't their best use. Especially when unsupported with Inf. Divisions.

I think we have a house rule against using paras on more than one target.
The Chindit Brigade is an airlifted unit and not a pure para unit? and Andy said it already was base at Myit.
- I do agree; a questionable move. I don't care to much, will move in reverse and run over it in Bhama

The rason for using the tank div in the jungle was that it moves quickly and carries as much punch as a regular div in a jungle.
My goal was to shock Myit but Andy informed me that pursuit takes places AFTER combat is resloved, this no shock attack.
- Terrain modifiers is nevertheless so extreme that a base for and battalion and 3 forts is enough to stall even a division, especially when disrupted by air strikes.

The Mini KB raid was a small success; Andy said it's the price he pays for using his B-17s for regular duties.
I think he should have placed search assets in Addu atoll and surroundings, but I'm perfectly happy with current arrangements!-)

Tomorrow 2 heavy cruisers will attempt to hit the remainder of the convoy and then return into the ocean.
Mini KB will retire immediately and provide LR CAP for the cruisers.

Things didn't go completely according to plan in the Indian Ocean. For the xx time I forget to switch off "Remain on station" and our 2 CA's and DD's...remain on station 1
hex from Trivandrum. The exact scenario I wanted to avoid. The enemy ships disbanded into Trivandrum; we missed by 1 hex and no react took place.
- SBDs and level bombers came out, our Zero's shot down some ac but the Atago took 3 1000lb bombs that penetrated. Incredibly enough this amazing ship shrugged it off!!

15 sys, 8 flood and 4 fires..that's ruggedness!

In Burma Andy is evacing Shwebo, suddenly 18 units were in Kathia and only 4 left in Shwebo. I'm 100% certain he strategic railed his units out; and I remember someone nagging about
not using strat movement on the frontlines - only for behind the lines movement! HA!

So we're moving to envelope and capture that dreadful Shwebo place again. If Andy is low on supplies a pursuit into Kathia - Myit could be on the table.
What do you think; will we be able to supply an advance in to the jungle here and receive more supplies than Andy?

Night spotters worked like a snake charm! 111 casualties from our cruiser bombardment and our assault achieved a 1-1 odds

We landed some reinforcements and more supplies, looks like Nuku Oa is in its feet.

Good progress in Burma as well; thinking that we should have shock attacked Shwebo from Mandalay in force, but such decisions are tough calls.
A failure can wreck an entire army.

Looks like we'll be entering 43 on a wave of victories!

All actually hit the Myoko with a torp at Noku Oa; same ship that previously hit a mine.
Should be ok - more about this later! No time to post last few reports.

The plan was to capture Myit but I couldn't get supplies through; need to build Lashio and maybe Bahma first.
The Burma road is cut and my goal is to fortify in the jungle outside the basin if Andy is receiving enough supplies to stand and fight.
- He will never drive us out of the jungle hexes

Noku Oa actually fell a couple of turns ago, so that's yet another completed plan.
Need to come up with a new one for 1943. Any suggestions, what should our main goals for 43 be?

Reactivating destroyed air groups

Here's a tip for you; it's possible to reactivate destroyed air groups.
Right click on them and pay some PP's and they'll return in a year or so.
- Spent 550 PP to "restore" my lost CAGs today!

PzB: the defensive line in the jungle you want to make behind the river sounds like a sound idea. 2 questions:
- will your units get enough supply there?
- can units dig in there (forts?), or is the jungle + river worth much more than a bunch of forts?

Units outside of base hexes usually receive supplies as long as the closes major base is not too far away and well supplied.
It's possible that I need to build up Shwebo to secure forward supplies but we'll see.

Yes, units dig in in all sorts of terrain; jungle gives a 3x defensive modifier - add some forts and you need a nuke to get through.

This turn was interesting; Andy asked why I'm getting so many late CAP fighters and said while he's getting 6 I'm getting 60!
- I think this is a result of how the CAP - LRCAP and range functions are combined as well as the number of fighters invloved.

This turn Andy sent his bombers after our advance elements west of Kathia. The approach adopted by Andy is that all bombers and fighters in numerous
bases are given the same target. This usually means that loads of fighters loose contact with the main raid and "sweeps" ahead.
The risk is that if the fighters turn back instead or trigger an alert the bombers may be hit hard.

Today saw massive "sweeps" and losses on both sides were heavy. Nevertheless our own sweeps and CAP claimed many enemy fighters and bombers.
Again we have a battle of attrition; I'm starting to rotate fighter units between Rangoon and the forward bases and moved 42 reserve Tojo's from Bangkok.
Another 36 Tony's and 42 Oscar IIs are available and the pools are plentiful. I also released 100 trained army pilots from China today. Average exp 50-58 and air combat skill ~70.
I continously feed replacements into the Burma squadron.

Despite a heavy pounding of our troops in the jungle the Allied shock attack by 1025 AV was muted and only managed a 1-2 odds. Such is the power of the jungle.
When we move a few divisions into the jungle my belief is that Andy will never be able to rout us. I have no idea if we will be able to rout the enemy but at least the basin will be saved.
- In total we have ca 7000 AV in Burma now so we have a mighty hammer and should be able to infiltrate any openings in the enemy lines.

We also recaptured Bhama, throwing the Chindits into the jungle again. A full tank division only managed a 2-1 odds against this little air lifted regiment of bombed and disrupted troops.
I have sent a fresh division from Lashio towards Bhama to threaten Myit and Kathia from the flank though, will continue to build the bases here.

When the monsoon begins in mid May I will re-evaluate the situation and ear-mark troops for other tasks.
As the Allied power grows we will have to garrison Malaya - Sumatra with more troops.

As long as you have engineers in the hex they will automatically start to improve your defenses and there will be a Forts(0) field in the ground forces menu for that hex.

This turn saw Andy sending dozens of sweepers over the contested jungle hex west of Kathia; didn't see a single bomber so I'm unsure how he could do that.
Suggestions?

We took slightly higher A2A losses than the Allies but fighting over friendly turf we only lost 11 pilots.
So no matter how we turn it it's still a battle of attrition that favors Japan.

It's crawling with mines and subs at Hiva Oa...sent a damaged DMS and a small PB in to handle the first.
They cleared lots of mines but both ships were then sunk by subs! US torps seems to be working better now.

PzB, great job, indeed. Seems you have the 4E threat under control for a while. At least until those things arrive en masse in a year. I am a bit confused about Andy's starving LCU in Burma, did they completely bug out to Mytkina and Imphal? Where are all his assets gone?
Could you give us an update on your naval dispositions? Is KB still in CentPac? Any further raiding actions planned?

Niiice. Replacement rate of Liberators II is 3 per month, so here goes 3 months of replacements.
OSCARs seems to fight surprisingly well, against Hurricanes. On the other way, NICKs, even against unescorted bombers, do not show anything special, and against any fighter they suffer horribly. How many kills their squadrons have? Especially in comparison to loses. Is it even worth keeping them in air?

I was recently checking Japan overall situation, and wondered, what will hurt Allies the most. Hit should cause long term harm, possibly even after reconquest. Since they have infinite amount of fuel, and supply, and the only problem is transporting it, raw materials are not good option.
Every base can be bypassed, or eventually conquered, so any defensive position is not good either.
I find only ONE good target - the aircraft factories in south-eastern Australia (well, there are also on West Coast, but to land there, Japan should use over half of its army).
So, since Japan have still strong presence in Australia, and most of Allied forces are tied in Burma (plus, most planes can not even divert to Australia, because of range), it would be interesting to re-launch Australia offensive, when Allied reserves will be committed to stop offensive, an invasion in south by 3-4 Divisions should be enough to temporary conquer large cities. Once conquered factories will convert to vehicle/armament, and I hope they do not convert back, so that would be hard, and long-lasting blow to Allies, in critical period of 43-44.
And, since tanks are actually slower in jungle, and I do not see hope for fight in open in Burma anytime soon, it would be worth to transport Tank Division to Australia.

Great suggestion, like that spirit!� That could do a lot of harm.� Even a mini-invasion of the West Coast, with LCU that may be lost after this raid, could create some confusion and delay Andy's further plans. �

Hitting raw materials won't hurt a lot, true.� The loss of a few Fuel TK's and supply convoys could create some inconvenience for him, and force him to keep some BB/CA/CV in the rear areas (>>number of raiders), burning his fuel, and hopefully disrupting his plans.� But you'd have to look out of large convoys, which Andy might be covering well.� The question would be "who's the bait"?

I have to agree with Inquisitor -- For sure, I would say with exception of a rather few AAR's, the concept of using strongpoint bases, including interlocking air bases, doesn't work well for Japan.� They can be bypassed, rendering their assets defeated without a fight.� They can be swamped quickly with overwhelming force due to the nature of fast naval operations, and just in a few cases (Cap & Gown's AAR maybe), the LBA has done some harm to USN amphib ops, or even just allowed� a quick joining with KB.� I would say that any hope is in raids and offensive actions, in retaining the initiative, but not in a (semi-)static defense.�

Andy commented on that he was planning a major 4E strike on Burma the turn after we hit Calcutta and disrupted his plans

Good timing in other words!

Nicks are usefull against bombers, also against low end Allied fighters if given an altitude advantage.
Used them for the Calcutta raid as I needed long range fighters. The 2 Nicks squadrons have many aces and numerous kills to their credit.
Until we get some proper bomber interceptors the Nicks will fight on.

The KB is now heading back to base to replenish; most of our destroyers are performing their 01/43 upgrade and some now receive radar sets.
Andy's reasoning for not engaging the KB near the Marqueses was the he had a major convoy to protect. This is possible but if engaged with enemy
carriers the KB would never get an opportunity to neither find or engage troop convoys.

I agree that static defenses are not always the key to victory; good defensive bastions to fight back from and that will delay the enemy and give us
time to counterattack are valuable though. If Andy captures a major airfield his LBA will efficiently block all our attempts to launch a counter invasion.
- Major bases like New Guinea, New Britain, Java, Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo, Formosa ...and especially the Phillipines must be defended strongly in order to tie
down enemy LCU and resources.

Offensive action in 43 must be carefully considered; that Andy finds it too expensive to launch a major offensive in Northern Oz right now doesn't mean he doesn't have
a lot of fire power. A counter invasion of Brisbane - Sydney sounds a bit suicidal to me; especially as the Army is still fully committed in Burma and also in Northern Oz.
I think it's possible to withdraw our armored units from Burma if our planned offensive bogs down, but it will be months until they can be replenished and prepped for
another theatre. Allied LCU is also quite strong by now and I'm not sure I would like to send the KB anywere near a major enemy LBA base. This is what routed it in our previous game.

Continued commerce raiding that targets enemy troop and fuel convoys sounds more promising. The question is whether we should combined the KB and Mini KB again to pose a more potent threat
to the combined Allied carrier fleets.

Air Combat

Oscar's aint' very good at shooting down armored fighters and bombers but with an altitude advantage they still provide marginal performance.
2 kills for 1 loss today. After we upgraded many of the Oscar units to Tojo's we got a huge pool of surplus Oscar Ic's. Their 12 hex range is most usefull
and is filling a gap the Tojo can't fill. Limited production of the Oscar II has commenced; this model has a max range of 13 hexes and later marks become even more usefull - all having a service
rating of 1.

Another thing I've noticed is that it's much simpler to coordinate strikes of similar bomber types and bombing missions against similar targets.
Try to hit both airfield and ports with Sally's and Helen's and you can wave goodbye to coordination.

Strategic Map 01-43

The map shows a serious overstretch into the deep Central Pacific.
- I'm not planning on maintaining a strong defense of all bases, but in case Andy decides to bypass Christmas Island this base will stocked with
fuel and supplies and act as a submarine depot.

In practice we're now almost able to reach both the eastern and western map edges with our long range search planes.
This means that it's quite difficult for Andy to move convoys from the north to south and vise versa.

If you go for south eastern (Perth) part of australia it will beeffectively sealed off from any resuply convoy. This will mean the Allies have to come trough burma OR pearl harbour.... so a lot less to worry about your soft underbelly (DEI)......

Hi d0mbo,

With the force levels the Allies have at this stage, coupled with the Japanese investments needed to keep Burma will make any offensive operation in prime Allied territory - India, Australia, WC a most unlikely scenario for any chance of success IMO.

A moderate investment ( 2,000 AV or so ) could net you the islands around Hawaii and allow you to greatly neutralise Hawaii as a viable staging post. Moving the battle eastward in such a manner would buy your Pacific perimeter an additional 6 months and the 5 divisions which would need to be committed could, later, be spread along the Pacific front line trace as significant and effective garrisons for the various islands ( successfully transitioning an invasion force to a viable defensive force in this way minimises the strain on IJA logistics and is, more importantly, efficient and tidy and good practice ).

CONUSA is a pipe dream at this stage and strategically reckless and useless. It wouldn't delay the Allies nearly as much as hitting Hawaiian perimeter islands and would have far less chance of success.

If you're looking for somewhere then I'd suggest hitting the Hawaiian island chain with a minor investment in the garrisons of the Kuriles such that they can reach level 9 forts ASAP.

If you decide not to go for Hawaii then I would suggest the following:
1. The creation of a strategic reserve on a ratio of 1:1 with all of your other committments.

What I mean by this is that for every AV you commit to the front line you should commit 1 AV to your strategic reserve.

2. Division of your strategic reserve into local and deep portions.
Your division between those two should be, again, in the order of 1:1.

So, 50% of the AV you buy out goes into the front-line defence while 25% goes into local reserves in the bases in the 2nd line while the other 25% is concentrated, along with the necessary sealift to move the entire deep strategic reserve in ONE sealift ( that's crucial ) in strategic mode. That sealift is your strategic reserve ( should comprise whatever APs and xAPs survive at this stage plus the AKs you have left ).

The idea is that if you suffer a sudden reverse you will have a smallish local force available to shore things up while you rush the 25% deep reserve ( with all their prepositioned assault shipping and escorts ) into the area. If you have calculated right you'll only need an additional 20% sealift to allow the 25% deep reserve to unload and change to combat mode and be loaded onto amphibious TFs ( since the difference between load space required in strategic and combat mode is 20% ). That 20% additional sealift should be free up by the diversion of nearby local forces to aid the sealing off of the Allied penetration.

At this point you can counter-invade, counter-attack more deeply or just strengthen the remaining defensive line with your strategic reserve... or do something sneakier and indirect elsewhere.

Usually when the Allies break through the Japanese fail because they don't have sufficient local reserves nevermind a deep reserve and I've NEVER heard another IJA player maintaining a deep reserve with dedicated assault shipping and escorts which is a bit surprising when you read the AARs and clearly see that the lack of such a reserve directly leads to massive allied exploitational abilities and much more rapid Japanese defeat. The illusion of forward strengths leads them to greatly weaken their strategic position in an unnecessary manner. I don't tend to maintain a deep reserve in 1942 when I'm attacking as that reserve forestalls offensives more successfully by attacking than existing in Tokyo but by the end of 1942 I believe a deep reserve of about 5 divisions is the bare minimum Japan can countenance. This would result in local reserves of 5 divisions ( 1 for the Central Pacific, 1 for the South Pacific, 1 for the DEI, 1 for China and 1 for Burma ) and is, I believe, the bare minimum one can countenance.

I would suggest the Marianas as an excellent base for the deep reserve. It avoids the risk of Allied carrier raids in 42-43 destroying the strategic sealift allocation, allows the rotation in of damaged xAKs for repair and their replacement from the reserve and it also allows co-operation between the deep reserve, KB and surface assets during the reaction to any Allied thrust and maximises the options available ( sealing off the penetration, counter-invading or mounting one's own offensive elsewhere )

Well, it is something to aim at and isn't impossible given enough time.

My view is that you should begin reinforcing the Kuriles on 8th December 1941 in preparation for an Allied counteroffensive in mid-43. WIth 18 months of building time even a moderate engineer allocation can build very significant fortifications ( particularly if you eschew the usual port and airfield building which some consider wasteful in the Kuriles ).

Again, if you consider something impossible you won't even try to do it. If you consider everything possible then you are only limited by actual capabilities and priorities and not your own biases. I find one's own biases are more limiting than reality usually is.
