Dong Xoai camp overrun by Viet Cong

In yet another well organized attack a Viet Cong regiment sized force have overrun the Dong Xoai CIDG camp north of Saigon and south of Song Be as part of their monsoon offensive. They quickly overwhelmed Detachment A-342. Reinforcements will need to be helilifted in to retake the camp along with airstrikes from US jets. This concludes turn 14.

Turn 15 - June 14th to June 20th 1965

Turn 15 opens with Dong Xoia CIDG camp overrun by an estimated Regimental sized Viet Cong force. ARVN reinforcements are being sent to retake the camp which is north of Saigon. There are no missions this turn. On June 17th US Ambassador Taylor has reported to Washington on the new coup that has brought Generals Thieu and Ky to power in South Vietnam. On June 18th The US airforce has been authorized to use Arc Light Raids in Vietnam by B-52 Bombers operating off of Guam. The B-52 will add range and massive firepower that will hopefully thwart VC operation in South Vietnam. Here's the news summary for turn 15.

The Battle for Dong Xoai CIDG Camp

To Relieve the Dong Xoai CIDG camp that was overrun by a Viet Cong Regiment the ARVN have helilifted the 30th Ranger Battalion, the 6th Airborne Battalion, the 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry, and the 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry to combat assault the camp. A Fire support base (FSB) is set up south of the overrun camp at a site that is secured by the ARVN 1st Battalion 8th Infantry. The ARVN 5th Cavalry Squadron repairs the road to the camp plus provides road security to the camp ensuring that supplies and ammo reach ARVN forces there without VC interference. US airforce B-52 Squadrons operating off of Guam bombard the VC forces in the area as they begin the first Arc-Light raids of the war. The VC force holding Dong Xoai is completely destroyed by the overwhelming superior firepower that is brought to bear on them. Sadly the weakened CIDG Detachment A-342 is destroyed in the battle to retake Dong Xoai by the retreating Viet Cong forces. This concludes turn 15.

Dong Xoai area

In the aftermath of the battle for Dong Xoai CIDG camp there is no sign of the Viet Cong Regiment that attacked the camp. They have melted away back into the shadows of the Jungles surrounding the camp. The ARVN 30th Ranger Bn, ARVN 6th Airborne Bn, and the ARVN 2/7 Infantry Bn garrison the site. The ARVN 6th Airborne Bn will be heading back to Saigon now that there are no signs of the enemy in the area for now.

3/7th Marines Land at Qui Nhon

General Westmoreland has requested that a Marine battalion be deployed immediately from Okinawa to Qui Nhon in Binh Dinh province to protect the massive Army Logistical base being built there in anticipation of the imminent arrival of several full army divisions. It is figured this is too lucrative a target for the VC to ignore for long. Admiral Sharp agreed but suggested it would be easier to send in the Special Landing Force (SLF) of the 7th Fleet. Westmoreland accepted the modification of his orders because it would be relatively easy to reembark the Marines once the army units arrive. On July 1st the 3rd Battalion 7th Marines (SLF) came across the beaches of Qui Nhon. They will remain on station for a week before being relieved by the 2nd Battalion 7th Marines and returning to Special Landing Force duty.
