DD Breese sank – it looked like the torpedo hit aft. So we can deduce that the "massive explosion" that the combat save indicated was due to a hit that touched off a magazine or depth charges.

On this 4th anniversary of the end of the Great War, the world is at anything but peace. The Pacific, from the Chinese coast to the Hawaiian Islands, is embroiled in war. The Entente which won the war is effectively dead, with Italy under the leadership of a Facist dictator, the Russians under Communism, and France and England estranged. from each other Even relations within the British Commonwealth itself are strained.

Perhaps in part to repair relations, as well as reward New Zealand for standing with Britian during the recent Turkish crisis, a ceremony is held in Wellington Harbor. In the midst of the solemn Great War anniversary commemorations, the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand is turned over to that Dominion's fledgling navy, becoming HMNZS New Zealand. The ship, a veteran of the Battle of Jutland, is just over ten years old, but is already outclassed by the latest designs. Nevertheless, the tranfer seems to score the diplomatic points it was intended. New Zealand feels a tremendous amount of pride, and other Dominions especially Australia seem pleased. There are rumors the battleship HMS Canada may be transfered to her namesake Dominion next year, as well.

The score so far:

This is the culmination of negotiations between the Dutch and Japanese goverments, which began on 11/5/1922 with "The Dutch respectfully wish to inform the Japanese government that an Australian battalion called Sparrow Force has been hired to help reclaim Talmud Island. They wil be traveling on a Dutch trasport, which just left Kendari for Darwin. It is hoped that repatriating this Dutch territory will end any lingering issues between our two governments, and work toward the interests of world peace".

Conditions in Shanghai and other parts of China are tense, with submarine sightings, debris from Japanese ships washing onto the coast, and rumors of a troop build-up at Tsingtao. The Chinese goverment makes a quiet inquiry to Japan as to its intentions in the region.

At the League of Nations, Chinese diplomats are given a message to meet with Japanese diplomats at a small cafe on a side street in Geneva, to discuss an opportunity to end the tensions between the two nations. The Chinese are given strict instructions that this is a secret meeting.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/04/22

Meeting unofficially in a Geneva cafe, Japanese League representatives communicate to their Chinese counterparts (speaking in Mandarin) "The Japanese government secretly asks the Chinese government for a 5-year lease of Shanghai, Tientsin, and Canton to deal with the growing threat of "'Southern Barbarians'".

Taken completely by surprise by this initiative, after a brief pause, the Chinese diplomats ask how this arrangement will benefit China. The Japanese reply "Peace, and lasting security from Western imperialism". The Chinese state they do not have the authority to make such an important agreement, and ask for two days for their government to issue instructions. The Japanese reply they will wait, suggests that the Chinese choose wisely, and warn that leaking information shared at the meeting at this time will cause severe damage to Sino-Japanese relations. A meeting is set up, in a Japanese buisnessman's private villa outside of Geneva, in 48 hours.

Meeting at the villa of a Japanese businessman outside of Geneva, Japanese and Chinese League of Nations representatives hold their second meeting regarding leasing key Chinese bases. It is noted that the Japanese military attaché is also in attendance.

After exchanging pleasantries, the head Chinese delegate, in an obviously prepared speech, states "The government of the Republic of China has instructed me to communicate that will not be possible at this time to honor the generous Japanese request. As a Republic, our leaders must answer to the people, and such an arrangement would not be politically feasible in the current climate.

"However, the Chinese government is extremely delighted that the honorable Japanese government used diplomacy, rather then resorting to threats or military action, to further its aims. It is hoped that this sterling example will be imitated by the European and American colonial powers. Such gracious behavior by the Japanese government will no doubt improve the recent strained relations between our two peoples, and lead to lasting cooperation and peace in our time- up to and including reconsidering the Japanese proposal at a later date".

After an uncomfortably long silence, the head of the Japanese delegation replies "The Japanese government reminds our Chinese neighbors that the European and American threat to Asia is imminent. Even now, no Chinese ship is able to conduct safe merchant shipping without running into enemy submarines right in Chinese home ports".

The Chinese delegate answers ""The Chinese government acknowledges the difficulties the current war in Asia has caused. Nevertheless, we feel this is a temporary inconvenience which will be solved through peace. The Republic is confident that the answer to peace is not additional colonialism, or to conduct a treaty which will broaden the war to include China, Chinese territory, or additional powers. As previously stated, our Republic represents its people, and we are confident that the desired arrangement would be against the wishes of it's citizens at this time".

After another long silence, the Japanese delegate states "Then I'm afraid we have nothing further to discuss. These negotiations must remain secret at this time, at the risk of severely damaging relations between our two countries", and leaves the room, with the rest of the Japanese delegation in tow. The Chinese are then politely escorted out of the house by servants.

That night, and for the next couple days, a number of spies report to their respective governments an unusual amount of coded telegraphs between Peking and Tokyo into and out of Geneva.

For Immediate Release from United Press International

State Department Warns China of Jap Attack

China was formally warned this morning that a Japanese attack may be imminent. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes personally called upon the Chinese embassy this morning. At noon, the State Department issued the following press release to the UPI and other news sources:

For several weeks, US submarines have, at great risk to their crews, been monitoring Japanese shipping in the Yellow Sea. These brave ships have sunk several Japanese transports loaded with troops, as well as a few warships. An extraordinary amount of Japanese naval activity has been observed at the former German colony of Tsingtao on the Shangdong Peninsula. This has been matched by a massive build-up of land forces, confirmed by offshore observation and brave landing parties. In two cases, photographs were taken of large encampments outside of Tsingtao. We shared these photographs with the Chinese this morning. One submarine in particular, USS S-17, barely escaped after being attacked by an unusually large number of warships off Tsingtao within the last few days.

The United States does not have any interest in the South China Sea. Indeed, the only other country besides Japan with territory along that body of water is the Republic of China. The United States therefore warns China, as well as the world, that we firmly believe Japan will soon invade China from Tsingtao, with the intent of subjugating its territory and peaceful population just as it did several months ago when it brutally invaded the Philippines.

In Geneva, the Chinese delegation is visited by the head of the Japanese League of Nations delegation. Insisting he must meet alone with his Chinese counterpart. The meeting lasts only a few minutes. The Japanese delegate states:

"I have been instructed to inform the Republic of China, that Japan will be conducting major military exercises in South China Sea the third week of January. To avoid any unfortunate incidents, we strongly suggest the Chinese Navy stay in port during that time. Please consider this privileged information, and sharing it with anyone outside of the most highest levels of your government will be considered a serious affront to Japan".

Once again, spies from several countries note a large amount of communications on the cables between Peking and Geneva this evening.

The head of the Chinese League of Nations delegation abruptly announces he must return to China for personal reasons. His deputy will be in charge until he is replaced. He, his aide, and a small security detachment take the first train out of Geneva for Marseilles. That evening, he boards a French ship bound for Canton. It is noted that the diplomat appears extremely worried.

Diplomats from several countries try in vain to ask the remaining Chinese diplomats the reason for their leader's sudden departure.

The captain of the French passenger ship carrying the Chinese League diplomat holds a Christmas celebration that lasts late into the night, as the ship finishes its crossing across the Mediterranean on its way to Canton. The Chinese diplomat participates, many passengers seeing him for the first time. He ends up drinking heavily, holding court at the bar and speaking in Mandarin with the bartender, who is from Hong Kong. The bartender seems to be listening intently to every word the diplomat says, and both seem very concerned about something. A Japanese businessman sits across the room, alone, drinking only water, watching the two.

As the French passenger ship approaches Port Said, the Chinese diplomat and his aide-de-camp are both discovered missing. A few passenger, nursing hangovers from the pervious night's festivities, seem to recall hearing a cry and a splash in the dead of night. An investigation from the captain concludes they must have fallen overboard, probably due to intoxication on the pitching deck.

The Japanese businessmen starts sitting at the ship's bar that afternoon. Some find it a bit odd, as he had ever been seen at the bar before, most of the passengers had too much to drink last night anyway, and the bartender is no where to be found.

That evening, as the ship passes the breakwater at Port Said, the missing Hong Kong bartender suddenly emerges, dives overboard, and starts swimming for shore. Half a minute later, the Japanese businessman dives overboard too, and starts swimming after him. It is noted that both make it to shore, the Hong Kong bartenders seems to be heading in the direction of the British embassy, with the Japanese businessman in hot pursuit.

The two main squadrons of the US Battle Fleet are ordered to stay in the protective torpedo nets at Midway, while destroyer groups are cobbled together to battle the submarines. A blimp squadron arrives to assist with reconnaissance. It is widely believed that a pivotal battle is about to happen off Midway, and morale aboard the US ships is high.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/08/23

After nearly a week of indecision, British Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law acquiesces to the repeated requests of Southeast Asia Command to shift forces to respond to a possible Japanese attack. The permission comes with a warning not to provoke the Japanese. This stems from intelligence gained from a Hong Kong operative aboard a French ship in the Mediterranean. The operative conversed with the Chinese League of Nations delegate hours before his apparent suicide on December 26, which warned of a Japanese move against “Southern Barbarians”.

You can imagine how painful that was to watch. Total score - 8 BBs sunk during the battle or right afterward. 23 DDs sunk, with 1 or 2 foundering afterward. 76 IJN AMCs sunk, with more foundering afterward. The score immediately following this action is posted below.

My immediate instinct after this was to concede - I blew it. I waited way too long to start a planned offensive, always waiting for 1 more ship, or one more LCU, to arrive as a reinforcement or in theatre before moving. Sad part was, I had a hint that this was coming, and even considered moving the fleet away, or even trying to surprise him halfway. But I thought I could fight it out, thinking the proximity to my bases, and long distance his ships would be, would work to my advantage. I have to say Rysynok's coordination between all the TFs and their timing when they arrived in the battle was very, very impressive (and scary).

After seeing the AMCs clash in the other AAR between Rysynok and Aces8, I knew even back then I was in trouble. I was building some AMCs, but not nearly that many, and even if I had started mass producing AMCs right then and there, I'd have about 3-4 months where I'd be at a disadvantage. But even then, the sheer number of AMCs thrown at me off Midway was unexpected. Big, big lessons learned in my first PBEM. Of course, about the only good thing I can say about this battle, is he doesn't have nearly as many of those pesky AMCs now .

Completely exhausted after watching that, I went to bed as it was late. Problem was. I stayed awake thinking of what The Day After would have looked like. Along with over 100 ships, the Balance of Power also sank off Midway. Japan is now the undisputed #1 naval power in the Pacific, the US Fleet is out of action in a way that would have exceeded Yamamoto's wildest dreams in 1941, and the rest of the Pacific rim is holding their breath waiting to see what Japan will do next. We exchanged some e-mails back and forth, and decided the game will continue forward.

Yes - ironic as it sounds, in this game, the Battle of Midway will forever be remembered with one of the United States' greatest defeats.

Also, from an historical perspective, it was probably the most violent naval warfare in a very long time - we're up to what, somewhere in the neighborhood of 108 ships sunk, with very possibly more to sink from battle damage? Someone better at pre-20th century naval history then I am maybe can figure out the last time that happened. By contrast, 27 ships were lost at Jutland in 1916, and 33 lost at Leyte Gulf in 1944! Granted, about 78 of the ships lost in our battle were Japanese, but I'd trade 10 AMCs and even throw in a few DDs or CLs for any one of those battlewagons back.

No use crying over it though - lets see what happens next.

Newspapers around the world start reporting that a huge, 2-day long battle has just taken place off Midway Island. However, there are very few details - the Japanese Fleet is observing radio silence, while the Americans are oddly silent.

A USN C-type NR Blimp hits SS No. 25 with ASW off Midway – this is the first time in the war an aircraft hit a ship.

AMC Koyo Maru sinks from damage from the Battle of Midway.

Japanese newspapers are now reporting a "Decisive Victory" off Midway, and proclaiming the fleet commander is "The Next Togo". The US War Department issues a terse statement, stating that a major naval battle took place off Midway, and between both sides over a hundred ships were sunk, including US battleships.

A press conference is held at the White House this morning, involving President Harding, the Secretary of War, and the Secretary of the Navy. All 3 men look haggard, with President Harding appearing especially unhealthy. General details of the Battle of Midway are given, including the fact that 8 battleships and about 24 destroyers have been lost, in return for almost 80 AMCs. They explain the main body of the Pacific Fleet was attacked by over 100 armed merchant ships on suicide missions on January 11, then overwhelmed before they could replenish their ammunition by the main body of the Japanese Navy on January 12. The Secretary of the Navy describes it as "a dirty trick". President Harding expresses his condolences to the families of the lost sailors, and vows they did not die in vain. The US will continue the war until victorious.

In the United States, the populations seems stunned. By the end of the day, however, American flags and patriotic bunting start appearing in many cities and towns.

Headlines around the world scream of the destruction of the US Pacific Fleet, along with questions such as "Is Japan invincible?" "Where will Japan strike next?". In the UK, Andrew Bonar Law seems almost as haggard as President Harding when he is briefly seen to express his condolences before disappearing behind closed doors to confer with political and military leaders. It is noted that a French delegation arrives for the conferences late that evening, the first time the two former Allies have been observed talking with each other since their recent diplomatic breech.

A USN H-16 from Midway hits SS No. 25 with ASW.

AMC Shinyo Maru #5 sinks from damage from the Battle of Midway.

At the League of Nations, the United Kingdom and France introduce a joint resolution to the League Council urging both the USA and Japan to cease hostilities immediately, and to respect the rights of neutral nations in the Far East. The resolution passes, with one abstention, Japan. The USA is not a member of the League.

In the USA, telegrams notifying families of dead and wounded sailors start arriving. Confounding skeptics, a grim sort of patriotic fervor seems to be rising, and there is a noticable increase in enlistments and war bond purchases. Nationalistic pride is also hitting new highs in Japan, as the population savors the victory, and prepares for celebrations marking the return of the battle fleet.
