Periodically I get a bug that causes my cursor to move to the upper left corner which results in a continuous scroll of the map.

I've no idea how to recreate the problem. I've no idea how to resolve the issue other than restarting or reloading my game. -I can only access the menu (or temporarily resume normal control) if I target an item and lock it, otherwise I can only move my cursor an inch or so before it resets to the corner.

I'm guessing upper left is 0,0 and there's something that's causing it to warp there, but I've no clue.

Never seen this myself... do you have the same problem in other apps?

Is the mouse optical? If so, would cleaning it help? (I find optical mice have a tendency to jump 'at random' when lint or hair is involved -- even when the mouse is not being touched).

I'm not saying its not the game, but the game would normally be going through windows to mouse drivers to speak with the mouse, and I've never seen the game influence the position of the mouse (it may pay attention to it when I am in other windows, but I never recall seing the game drag the mouse around the screen for me). //Torrenal

I've had this problem myself of the cursor jumping to the top left corner (though less so it seems with the latest update, maybe coincidence), assumed it was a problem with my mouse so didn't bother to report it. It mainly seems to occur when in the game editor for me. I find I can resolve it by doing a save, after the galaxy things stopped spinning the cursor is back to normal.

Also I do use an optical mouse.

I never touch the game editor, and I never see the problem... (Hrm....)

When my optical mice begin jumping, I take it as a sign to clean the mouse and the surface its on (though to be honest, most of the jumps are fairly small, not 'top of screen' material). Currently using an optical tracball @ home, which hasn't had this problem (this one stops responding with too much lint), and an archaic ball mouse at work. //Torrenal

Ive had the same problem lots and its really annoying. The cursor to move to the top left of the screen and there's nothing you can do about it. Also it is the game and not the mouse because if you alt-tap out of the game the mouse works fine and i didnt even know there was an editor.

PS ive just joinned the forum because it has just happened to me again.

Totally not the mouse, though I've cleaned the cat hair out of it.

I have a dual display setup, if I move the mouse on to my secondary display, it doesn't move. Only in the game window. And, as stated before, if I lock a target, it behaves properly until unlocked again. Never seen the behaviour before in anything else. Definitely game related.

Lets elaborate some on the detail: OS, Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, and observed User Input symptoms

OS: Windows Vista 64 bit. Mouse: PS2 style Microsoft mouse - Product ID 52204 Keyboard: Razer Lycosa Monitor: Dual monitor. Running game from the primary display, which has the larger screen.

Observed User Input symptoms: The only mouse anomalies I see is that the game will respond to mouse clicks made in windows on monitor 2. It does this by briefly drawing a box in the game screen, as if I were going to select multiple ships. It will also respond to some keyboard input (arrow keys will scroll the game window) when focus is in non-game windows on the second monitor. I have had to specifically run other applications in administrator mode to get that kind of keyboard behavior, so its appearance outside of this mode is disconcerting. While I have observed the occasional fleet heading for the top left corner of the map, or ships teleporting there (both very rare and unreproducible), I believe those to be unrelated to any user interface problems. Mouse observed to jump? Never. //Torrenal

I am also getting this very bug. I can assure those in the tech support area that this is not a "user-side" error, this is completely limited to the game screen only. Also, I am only running on one monitor.

I am noticing that the issue might be tied to messages/offers box in the top left (from pirates), though it may also extend to messages from other empires. It's hard to keep track though, as I get intensely angry at the loss of my entire game and tend to only focus on that. Yes, reloading does bring back a usable game for roughly the time it takes for the issue to arise once more.

Again, I iterate that this is not a "mouse" problem. Alt-tabbing to the desktop alleviates all mouse issues immediately. I say this because I know just how defensive tech support can be about their product (Ex: "I can't replicate the issue so that means it's your fault.").

Edit:

Windows Vista (64-bit)
Logitech G15 Keyboard
Logitech G500 Mouse
Monitor is Samsung Syncmaster 2033 (though this is irrelevant to the issue)

Good to have the info!

The G500 would be a corded laser mouse (lint a possible factor (which I doubt, but please check), batteries not an issue... cord might be, just be sure it's firmly connected and not frayed (again, I doubt this is the issue, but please look)). I take your mention of one monitor to mean you are not in a multiple-monitor setting...

Might be worth checking that you have the latest drivers for your mouse: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/428/5750?section=downloads&bit=&osid=13

I'm bringing monitors into this because multiple monitor environments have special considerations that can affect mouse use if not properly considered (for example, negative mouse coordinates become possible). If its glitching in a single monitor setting, that allows us to discard an entire host of possible factors.

I'm hoping we see a few more reports so we can start identifying common factors.
//Torrenal

(Grr... you would be surprised how many games involve moving to the top left corner and jumping... searching for other examples of this problem is.... difficult).

I'll post a report of my own system tomorrow (if I remember!)
But I only have 1 monitor, so it's not multiple monitors causing it.

I don't quite know if the issue is linked. Before another mouse lock-up, I managed to kill the pirates that kept sending me a "proposal". Reloaded the game, and now I experience no mouse errors. Again, I have absolutely no proof that they were the actual issue, my knowledge of computer programming is amazingly varied and untrustworthy.

my mouse jumps to the corner as well. Sometimes I can save the game, and sometimes I have to end task using task manager.

I use a Dell corded optical mouse, Vista 7 ultimate 64-bit, and single monitor. Like the other posts, I have no problems with any other game/screen. The error takes anywhere from 2 hrs to 6 hrs to appear (I pause the game at night when I go to bed, instead of logging off becasue it takes a couple of minutes to load the game from scratch).

Necro post!

This is still an issue with 1.5.0.0. :(

Since my original post, I have found that if you save your game, the mouse reverts to normal behaviour, but the pointer will start flaking quicker and quicker after the save. So, perhaps, a memory issue?

For those of you that encounter this, you can usually lock onto an item to get control of your mouse again (though if you break the lock, it goes flying again).

I had this bug, try ctrl + s to save the game, then close the program

Sometimes if I manage to minimize it, the cursor is released.

Hi all

I don't think this issue is related to Distant Worlds. It might show up in DW because it works your CPU and memory more than most other apps, but DW itself doesn't do anything special with your mouse.

Have you made sure that your mouse drivers are up-to-date? Possibly this is even a hardware issue - if you play DW for long sessions your PC might be working harder than it's used to, overheating, etc?

Can you outline specific steps that reliably reproduce this problem in DW?

Thanks
Elliot

This problem has happened to me after saving the game. Maybe it has something to do with the game using Window's...er, windows? If I recall correctly, most games that use Window's GUI for menus and such tend to have these kind of issues. (But like one of the above posters, my technical knowledge is flaky...)

Once this starts have you all tried double clicking the left mouse button while the curor is in the upper left corner?

The only game I've ever experienced this behavior with the cursor is Civ IV BtS. And only when I Alt-Tab out of the game. The cursor will move to the upper left corner of my monitor and I have to DBL click to get control back. The mouse is a LX-3 Logitech Optical USB corded mouse. Seems the mouse is still under CIV's control until I Dbl click.

Hope this helps.

Hi all, i have been having this issue not long after the game released, and it is frustrating as hell... i stopped playing this for a number of months after no fix... i bought the expansion a couple months ago hoping this would be fixed but it's not...   sorry to necro this topic but i couldnt find any others more recent and this was 7 pages back... so i did search.

As those above have stated despite Eliot's claim that it's not DW, this only happens in this game, and i play many different games daily...  i really love DW's concept and enjoy the game very much when it works, but this bug is just KILLING it for me!...

Oh btw, i got the bug going right now with the game minimized running in the background... which is why i'm here, i'm frustrated to hell and want to play my game!!   auto save isnt working (tried quick save liek 10x now) and it's been i think 20 min now and still goin in that corner... 2 loads also and a few min later boom, corner... sometimes it will last longer, sometimes within 30 sec.

I dont care if it's a game issue or a .net framework issue or something! i just want to be able to get threw a game without this happening a few hours into the game then every 5 min after a load.

My cursor goes to upper right corner and I just start clicking like insane and it stops. Somehow clicking helped because once I left it to stop by itself but it didn't want to.

i've had upper right corner only once on a small galaxy map before, oddly moving the mouse around in circles eventually fixed it i found, but that was the only case that it worked or went to the upper right side..  i normally like to play large galaxys and it always goes top left... clicking, moving, zooming in and out and bashing on the keyboard all dont help... half the time auto saving/quick save wont fix it either...

in some cases (doesnt work too often) only way to get the mouse back i find is if you click and hold then right click you get a ship menu, the mouse is freed up then, but the second you click and the menu goes away it goes back half a second later... if your fast you can click something before it does lol.  other one is locking the camera to a ship as someone mentioned, that also seems to work for doing stuff in the menu but when you break the ship lock it goes back to top left... sometime it undoes itself, but not often.

i normally use space bar but it doesn't take effect when theres a pop up or menu open... also i cant hit the pause button :P

Edit: i managed to use the tab key to cycle the news thing (not sure why or how it got selected) so i pressed and held enter key to spamm the screen to a location, this gave me enough time to click the pop up away and pause the game... still have to stay locked to a ship cause it's still lovin that corner.

as a note to helping solve this bug, i notice when being locked on another ship the mouse looks different, it's no longer the game image mouse but Windows Mouse... also when locked onto a ship and able to do things, i cant select a ship by clicking on it or get the drag box to select anything... as if the games mouse is still in the corner with the drag box.... but yet the games UI is still able to be used.

well i have to stop playing my game now i guess... the extra large map i was playing, even when i shut it down and restart it a day later, is scrolling instantly when loaded up... it seems like it got stuck that way from either the save file or the longer load time could be a cause or a mix of both.

Can i get someone to comment on this so i know they have at least read and acknowledge the problem? this is not exactly an isolated issue, and is clearly something to do inpart with the game.

Are you using a wireless mouse?

I've had problems with them in some games. I had the mouse in corner of the screen in ROTS last night.

Perhaps you could try a direct wired mouse.

I just bought a fancy wireless mouse it's got a cable you can connect to a USB port to charge it up. It costs though. Otherwise I was using rechargeable batteries.
