Telephony and W/T arrive at the new secret headquarters this afternoon. Gin slings all round!

The wireless thingy is cool, but nobody uses land lines anymore except bill collectors and alumni associations....well, I suppose you might need it if Nagumo finds out where you really are.

A bit of interesting history:

The Singapore Sling is a cocktail that was developed by Ngiam Tong Boon (嚴崇文), a bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel Singapore before 1915.[1] Recipes published in articles about Raffles Hotel prior to the 1970s are significantly different from current recipes, and "Singapore Slings" drunk elsewhere in Singapore differ from the recipe used at Raffles Hotel. The original recipe used gin, Cherry Heering, Bénédictine, and most important, fresh pineapple juice, primarily from Sarawak pineapples which enhance the flavour and create a foamy top. Most recipes substitute bottled pineapple juice for fresh juice; soda water has to be added for foam. The hotel's recipe was recreated based on the memories of former bartenders and written notes that they were able to discover regarding the original recipe. One of the scribbled recipes is still on display at the Raffles Hotel Museum.

The current Raffles Hotel recipe is a heavily modified version of the original, most likely changed sometime in the 1970s by Ngiam Tong Boon's nephew. Today, many of the "Singapore Slings" served at Raffles Hotel have been pre-mixed and are dispensed using an automatic dispenser that combines both alcohol and pineapple juice to pre-set volumes. They are then blended instead of shaken to create a nice foamy top as well as to save time because of the large number of orders. However, it is still possible to request a shaken version from bartenders.

But I ordered gin slings. No tips for that barman.

Ah, splendid! It seems Admiral Lord Sprior got the antenna working again at the new 800kg bomb-proof command bunker.

aka Columbo Cricket Club Pavilion, 34 Queens Rd., Colombo, Ceylon.

Do you really think it prudent to give that kind of specificity? After all, what if that annoying LYB Nagumo is in the Indian Ocean? Of course, this could be a fiendishly clever MI5 disimformation operation, in which case, you would probably reply something like. "we aren't afraid of that little midget Nagumo and his bamboo airplanes".

Cap Mandrake,

I might be slightly inaccurate here, but I believe one of the Sir Lankan (nee Ceylon) major Test cricket grounds is close to a former major colonial fortress (IIRC, Galle). So Lord Admiral Sprior might really be located there, hoping to entice LYB Nagumo (tm) into range of the CD defences.

As in pre-WWII uncovered pitch, affected by overnight rain. Where the batting order might be inverted and the bunnies are sent out first to take the shine off and hope the combined effect of sun and wind dries out the pitch?

That's a sticky wicket. A sticky green is any kind of drink with a straw and/or fruit in it that girls drink.

Secretly, I do enjoy a Long Island Iced Tea when I am at happy hour....but I make them serve it in a manly glass.

Generally speaking, if a drink has more fruit juice than it does alcohol, a man should not order it, or if it is proffered, he should pretend to be muslim or mormon. And grenadine syrup is verbotten. You might as well just have yourself gelded.

The possible exception would be the Darwin Antipersonnel Bomb: Irish Whiskey, Creme de Menthe and Guiness

Your entire class of "boilermakers" are so mind-numbingly self destructive that no human being in possession of two X chromosomes would be stupid enough to drink one. By default then, it is the exclusive provence of the male.

My neighbor threw a fantastic birthday party for herself with a really good Stones immitation band, 30 caterers, an "olive bar" (I'm not kidding...a whole bar of gourmet olives...from every island in the Mediterranean..even from Crete..which was good because there were many Cretins there due to the open bar), retro 1950's furniture, parrots.....even midgets (OK, I made that up..no midgets). Anyway, there was one guy assigned just to the Martini bar. He had a 1950's bellhop uniform on with a bow tie and everything. Just painful. I felt sorry for the guy so i figure I'll order a Martini, Bombay, straight up, two olives and give him a tip. Turns out he can't wait to try out some of his "custom" Martinis. I just wanted a straight Bombay martini but he was so earnest. I figured I'd just take his recommendation before he tried to sell me Amway or something.

Two minutes later I walk away with some monstrosity with Blue Curacao. It was absolutely undrinkable. It tasted like printer's ink...well...that's what I imagine printer's ink to taste like. I tossed the thing at the base of a dwarf lemon tree and switched to wine. I didn't get the blue color off my teeth for 2 d.

If it has anything other than gin and dry vermouth it isn't a martini. You should have sent the goober to Yossarian.

I haven't gotten a turn from the Admiral in two days. Maybe he is chopping wood again-or he just found out I have two divisions on Sumatra, which is fair because he has two on North Island.

Amen, Brother!

One of the greatest disappointments in my life was when, after 2 months of floating around on one of those "large gray boats" in the IO, my plans to spend a week on liberty in Singapore were disrupted by that darned Jimmy Carter who desperately needed us to go back out to sea and scare the Ayatollah Khomeni once again---

So, I missed out on relaxing on the Raffles Hotel Verandah, stylishly gracing the premises in a magnificently tailored White Linen Suit as one of their valued guests, sipping G&Ts made from Bombay Sapphire Gin, and exchanging witty repartee across the table with a gorgeous Eurasian 'Professional Social Hostess." (and you know, I don't think they ever refunded the deposit for my room reservation, either!).

Ah, the memories of what never happened: not an umbrella pooching out of the top of a drink anywhere, or the scent of fru-fru fruit around the Bar!

So, screw the Singapore Slings, you whussies!

Drink a Man's Drink! (Besides, the tonic's medicinal properties ward off malaria, so it's really a health food in the Malaria Zone! And, to be sure, much better for your attitude than some darn Atabrine tablets.)

The only people who drink Singapore Slings today are failed Starlets "dating" aspiring film producers in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Just my embittered opinion---

If Carter had been President in 1942 there would have been no concern about LYB spies in the Panama canal...because he would have given it away.

**********Australia Command HQ, Sydney, June 7, 1942************

Gen. Blamey: Am I to understand there are 5 carriers off Darwin, three more CV's and a CVL headed for Horn and another CV and 2 escort carriers near Port Moresby? <starts counting on fingers..after some time> That is NINE fleet carries a CVL and two CVE's. Do the Japs really have that many?

Aide: Best intelligence is the true figure is something South of that.

Gen. Blamey:I should say so. Starting today, I want every espresso machine out of every Australia Command recon squadron......

BTW, Horn Is. supports 60,000 troops and is still provoking shock attacks.

The intact 77th IJA Regt attacked today and was repulsed at 1:2. They also did not bring combat engineers with them. Allies supplies are poor.

I have wondered about this for some time.

Donald Duck, in his normal daily activities, wears no pants, yet, when he gets out of the shower, he puts a towel around his waist.

Can someone explain that to me?

Also, how come Goofy can talk but Pluto can't? Think about THAT for a while and see if your head doesn't explode.

Another Disney dilema. Mickey owns Pluto, right? But Mickey is a mouse. So what if Mickey is out walking Pluto and Pluto sees Thumper or something. Mickey is going to look like a fur ball with road rash.

That **** just makes my head hurt. Anyway, back to the easy stuff.

Horn Is./Torres Strait: With 12 carriers reported operating near Darwin and the Torres Strait, it seems imprudent to send the three Allied carriers readying themselves at Wellington. Nor can we expect a surface group to get through...and back out safely.

Airfield damage at Horn Island is in the 40's. Soon the Jap LBA from New Guinea will switch to ground attack.

I sent a few more B-17's from New Zealand to Charter Towers to harrass the 77th Regt.

Kimberly: Some of the support troops got out but the evacuees from Darwin stopped to make PB&J sandwiches and have not yet arrived at Kimberly. They should arrive next turn. Another Jap Regt. arrived at Kimberly (4oth Inf). I think they will attack when 6th Gds Div arrives.

South Pacific: Quiet except for 17 raids on Norfolk.

Cent Pac: Wasp and North Carolina left the Canal for Pearl. They will rendezvous with Yorktown and Formidable and then move down where the action is.

Western Oz: Admiral Lord Sprior's plan to land at Broome or Derby and trap 50,000 LYB's is in the planning stages I think.

Here is what Normanton looks like. I'm not sure we can expect much from the local militia.

I wonder what the sign budget was. With the red soil it looks like some place in rural Utah with a big sign that says "Fresh Beef Jerkey"

Aha. That explains it then.

"Mornington" should be "Mockington". Looks like we aren't going to be using the Torres Strait for a while.
