I posted this on the Scenario forum, but got no answer, Hope to have better luck here.

I need to know how to change the start lines from up and down the map, to side to side (North and South to East and West). I know I've seen this before and thought I had saved the info, but I can't find it. :(
I'm using a premade map for a PBEM game. I have moved the retreat hexes and reenforcement hexes to the appropiate ends of the map, but can't get my start lines where I want them.
Any help will greatly appreciated. :)

I figured someone would have answered this by now, I don't know personnally because I don't build scenarios but I will ask the people that do, as my experiment in trying to do this didn't work.

Moving start lines in the manner you describe is a wee bit tricky.

Just keep in mind that no matter how you put them, the computer is seeing them as being vertical.

A single hex of a start line will be in effect the entire width of the board. So depending upon your intention, just a few start line hexes will "split" the screen.

IOW, you cannot draw a startline horizontally across the playing area as you can vertical. A game limitation.

Some compromise such as a diagonal start-line with some creative use of the way that the computer sees start lines is probably the best you will be able to do.

This is one of those things easy to do but difficult to explain.

Open up a blank map and scenario and start playing. You'll get it soon enough when you try to deploy.

I'm gonna try and draw a picture of how I think this works.

__________
0000000 -+
0000000 -+
- 000- 000+
- 000+000+
-+ 0000000
-+ 0000000

Legend:

0= Map Terrain, empty space I had to put in for the mini-map to format right.

|'s and _'s = the edges of the map.

- = One sides Hex positions for the lines...

+ = The other sides Hex positions for the lines...

Does it make sense? I know it does in my head, but that doesn't mean much does it?

Thanks Redleg , G_X , & gmanfan.
I tried the method that G_X drew up and it worked somewhat, except that both sides had to deploy on the same side.
I will now take Redleg's advice and try, try again. I do appreciate the responses :)

I think this is the way it would work. I say "think" because I played with the start lines one or twice, but never set one up the way described:

The map is a rectangle with Player One on the left and Player Two on the right. Put Player One's start line in one hex from the right and Player Two's start mark on the far right hex. P2 will not be able to deploy any units on this row; P1 can in any except the two far right hexes. Place this arrangement in three or four rows and you have an "East - West" running start line. Move to the bottom of the board and place P1's start mark on the far left hex and P2's one hex to the right of that and you reverse the situation.

I think that's what the diagram shows ... Wait, that means I understand what made sense in G_X's head. Oh, drek.

You can put the center start lines along the side with P1 on far left, P2 on the far right and no units can be deployed in the center, or stagger them down the length of the map to get a diagnal start line.

From what I've seen, this is how I would try it. Also, I never tried, but I wonder if the start lines can be overlapped so you can set up units anywhere you want. That would be a confusing battle.

I pray this makes more sense.

___________
0000000 -+
0000000 -+
- 000-000+
- 000+000+
-+ 0000000
-+ 0000000

Red start line, Blue Start Line, Green Grass...

Make a little more sense now?

Took me alot of work to color that....ugh.

I was right! It is difficult to describe.

Tell you what, if you can't get going, send me the scenario so I can see what we are speaking of and I'll try to help out that way.

If we both have a copy of the scenario, we can talk about specific hex columns and rows and more than likely get it done.

Thanks guys! I think I'm about to get it, just a few more trys. :) Nice picture G_X. A picture is worth a thousand words! Mainly need some time to sit down and work with it. If I'm not able to get it to work like I want, I'll take Redleg up on his offer of help.
Rick, were you going to say something? :D
Thanks again.

that is funny I did not realize that the book I typed out on this subject did not post-----
lets try it again
once you are in the edit mode, go to the lower left buttons there are 2 green flags in a horizontal position.
once you click on that the new menu is 3 separate flags
the one on the left is for player number's starting positions, usually the player on the left side of the map. click on the blue flag and click on the upper right hand side of the map. where you just clicked is the furthest point at which player number one can deploy his men along that row of hexes.
now keep clicking down the right hand side of the map. you will see the flags following you
go to about a 1/3 way down the map starting from the top
once you get 1/3 of the way , click on the furthest hex on the left side of the map (be sure to be one row of hexes below where you left off on the right side of the map)
click all hexes on the left side until you get to the bottom of the map.
you are done with player number one's deploy area.
player one can only set up on the upper 1/3 of the map

now click on the green flag button or the flag button in the middle
since in a normal game player 2 sets up on the right side of the map you want to click on the furthest hexes to the left, start at the bottom and go about 1/3 of the way up the left side of the map, the shift on the same hex row to the right side of the map.
click on all hexes on the right up to the top

what you have is a map where player number 1 can set up on the N'ly 1/3 of the map and player 2 deploying on the S'ly end of the map. there is a 1/3 of the map that no one can deploy hence you have a north - south battle

HINT! savvy players in this configuration figure out that if they purchase their units right and buy those tanks (depending on the map size) can have a company of tanks already deep inside their opponents area and just don't deploy them just keep them where they are. do you get it??;)
