Which do you prefer, FoG or HPS' Ancient War series?

Give me your address, and I'll mail you Gallic Wars. Just can't play it, and I tried. All the details are there, but the interface is cumbersome and very old school. Maybe I'm just getting lazy in my old age. But I'd rather play FoG and expansions in the time I have left! Especially with their MP server.

I love HPS, but there's no contest. I have Alexandrian Wars, too. Their new France 1914 game is such a labor of love. But again, for me, so slow and cumbersome as to be unplayable.

Best to you!

I usually prefer Igo Ugo to WEGO, so thats a vote for FoG. It does seem that the various updates to AW have addressed some issues that apply to FoG, though.

How do the grahics compare? Do the screenshots availabel not do FoG justice?

I'm guessing AW would be better for Allisea than FoG.

Counters (better) or very fuzzy figures for HPS, and miniatures style for FoG. FoG looks better than shown in the screen shots. Also, the editor in FoG is much easier to use and you can change all the stats on each unit. Never even played MP until FoG. Some pretty knowledgeable users at Slitherine forum.

But seriously, if you want Gallic Wars, send me an email. I want to give away some of this stuff.

I own Punic wars, its one of those games that I WANT to love, but just cant dive in for some reason... Like you said all the detail and depth is there... i tend to think part of the problem, at least for me, is the learning curve coupled with the lack of feedback to what you are doing and why its wrong;). The AI slaps me around even in the shorter scenarios and i just cant figure out why my skirmishers end up routed or disordered after a turn of skirmishing an equal # of AI skirmishers etc.... Another issue is (as is all JT games) the AI takes ridiculously long turns for some of the larger battles
(30plus minutes sometimes!) Maybe i am losing patience the older I get, I dunno. Somdday i will sit down and take the time to learn these games...

To be accurate, I just booted up Alexandrian wars, and the graphic figures are actually pretty good. There's just lots of them, so you've got to be a micro manager to enjoy the game.

Heck, for $30 at the Online Gaming Store you could do worse. But buy Alex or the newest one. They have campaign options.

It appears all games in the AW series have been patched up to the latest standard. Newer group movement may cut micromangement. There definitely seems to be a more active FoG player base. Still on the fence.

Both are great systems......But FOG got me into buying and playing FOG miniatures.  I am already into civil war miniatures.
