I will caveat the above with the fact that I will be taking a break from development for a while as the summer hiking season is upon us. I will fix bugs or other issues and will continue with development in the fall when the weather turns colder. Please submit any ideas in the interim as I will continue my design work and topic discussion over the summer so I'm ready to continue with the coding in the fall. If by chance you are a Java developer and you want to join in the fun, let me know and we can figure out how to work on this together. :-)

Don't know if this is a bug, but I had an event at Paramushiro-Jima, in the Kuriles (I invaded it as Allies and took it) and the map would not snap there. It remained near the Soviet off-map entry box in the north center of the map when I clicked on the event. Is every base hex in the spreadsheet I see in the folder? Or is this maybe something to do with bases near the map edges?

Looks like the base is in the file and that this is a parse bug. I'll correct that and thanks for the bug report.

Bret

Excellent. (As if I understand what you said.)

For after your summer, if you want a suggestion (don't know how hard it would be), but colorizing the hotpoints where a to-a-hex snap is available might save some clicks. From plugging away it looks like the whole report line might be a hotpoint? Not sure, as the boundaries seem undefined in some cases. Not a deal-breaker, I just like to save my clicks.

I would support very strongly the need to do what Apollo suggested about map tracks of identified forces - I remember him suggesting it just before Bodhi's utility stopped development.

I'd also like what was in Bodhi's utility that allowed you to see how long a TF would take to get from A - B given an assumption of a direct line and an input of the speed it would travel at. I have't a clue at the moment - useless at maths!

My only concern is that this is another thing I will have running at the same time as the game - I wonder whether there is any common ground between your work and WITP Tracker?

Roger

Combat Reporter 1.01 is now available. I corrected the parse problem for hyphenated base names. Thanks for catching that one "Moose"

The entire line is a hotspot to click on. I will look at highlighting lines that will move the map. They key is to look and see if a location is present in a line. You can look for "at x,y" or "near <location>". If a line has these constructs, then more than likely the map will move to that location. I did fix a bug that you reported on that wasn't working properly for hyphenated base names.

I'll add the hotspot highlighting to my to-do list.

Excellent, I'm not normally a "detail" player but this helps in getting an overall view and provides some info I never look at.

Questions from a Luddite.
1.    I cant get the map, I've set the preferecne to the WITP AE file, do I have to direct it to the ART Folder??
2.    Even though I set the date as yesterday, it looks at old saves (I assume for updates) do I have to delete old files to make it more efficient?

Warning, set the upgrade off when reviewing, it refreshes and you have to start again.

Regarding Question 1: Should point to the root folder (J:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition).
There is a file in the tool folder named combatreport.properties.
You can view and edit that file with a word processor (just make sure at save the name and especially the file type is not changed).
When you open the file there should be:

watchDir="J:\\Matrix Games\\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\\SAVE"
==> this is where the tool looks for your games saves

witpDir="J:\\Matrix Games\\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition"
==> this is where the tool is looking for the map. Actually the tool looks for the ART folder to be in that folder.

Substitute J: with your drive letter.

Regarding Question2: the tool reads from the first save there is to the last. No need to do anything for you.

In the file combatreport.properties is a line which reads something like:
startIntervalDate="05/09/2010 02:19 PM"

==> this is the first save the tool reads. The date to start with can be set within "Preferences".
There you also can set (or browse for) the folders the tool needs to collect data.

There is a user guide that explains how to use CombatReporter. I know, we never read documentation, but it explains a lot.

As the author of the tool I can answer your two questions:

1) use the file menu to select preferences
2) the first field on the preferences is the location of the WITPAE install directory. The program will find the art directory from there to load the maps.
3) the second field on the preferences menu is the location of the save folder. The reason for this is that you might be archiving your reports and you will need to tell the program where they are saved, otherwise, just use the save folder.

4) the date/time is used to select all reports created on or after that date/time:

for example: if I pick 01/01/2010 12:00 AM
the program will find all reports created after that 01/01/2010 12:00 AM
if I played a game on 12/31/2009 9:00 AM and created a report, that report will not show up.

so, this date /time is used to filter how many combat reports you want to see at any time

5) The refresh interval is used to determine how often the program checks to see if a new set of reports has been created. The refresh you see will only happen if the files are being modified by the game and I would recommend setting the refresh to 60 secs.

In the folder where you installed CombatReporter you will find a file named combatreport.bat.
Double click that file to make CombatReporter run.
If you wish you can make a shortcut on your desktop pointing to that bat file.
How?
Open Explorer and navigate to the folder combatreport.bat is in.
Drag the file to the desktop.

Apparently you open the file (combatreport.bat) with EDIT.
You have to run the file with OPEN.

If you're using Windows XP try this:

right click on the file, and from the pull down menu choose OPEN.

If the file then executes but not when you double click the file you have the wrong file association for the file type BAT in your windows system setup.

Thanks Rainer ( & Bret)

I was concerned as I saw the reports but not the map.

I logged out and back in and, et voila, maps showing me where the reports were relating too, fantastic.

I still get all of my save files showing, of course they aren't updated but it may be taking up space looking at each one.

You will always see all saves beginning with the date set in combatreport.properties.
You can change the date of the first save to be shown with preferences.

It brings up combat reports dated back to 23/6/10.

But, they do relate to the same PWS file , is it looking at all of the combat reports which relate to my current game?? Even though they are older than the startIntervalDate??

Because there aren't separate files for two day turns I guess the tool is just not smart enough yet. At least that's the problem we have with Tracker too ...
