With bayonets fixed one stronghold after another is put out of action.

Elden

The 82nd Airborn have moved south leaving the British 1st para to dig in around Arnhem.

There's a lot of open ground to cover if they are to link up with the Arnhem Bridge defenders...

Tried and True tactics..

Carry the day...

The brave supply echelon drivers head straight for the desperate 1st Airbourne paras.... ignoring any enemy resistance.

Fuel and ammo is now plentiful...

Meanwhile the the XXX corps armored formations are still well south of Nijmegen.

This also means artillery support now becomes available for the hitherto distraught paras.

Wolfheze.

With German morale seemingly at an all time low and expecting to win just by showing up ... the paras begin to advance out of their encircled postions.

But...it seems like machine guns are everywhere

Gerry hasn't thrown in the towel... just yet

The 6pdr manages to take out an armoured car but that was the highlight.

Single man rifle teams are all that's left.

The order is "Hold"

The snipers take up defensive positions but the stronger teams attract the attention of the lurking Luftwaffe.

With neither side having the strength to launch any major attacks time... runs... down

Velp

The South Staffs moved out to Velp hoping to forstall any German advance into Arnhem

They deploy in the few buildings offering inital protection... but any advance is over wide open fields.

Directly South is the Arnhem Road Bridge Exit... this is the prize.

The exit is secure..The bridge is safe.

Pannerden

The dashing Americans, euphoric with victory, chance their hand at an assault crossing instead of waiting for support.

German armoured support dominates the crossing point.

The river banks offer no cover from the buildings and the teams get shot up bad.

Disaster ensues

The Germans have rolled in armoured support

The stugs initially roam back and forth shelling the buildings and inflicting a few losses.

A typhoon peels off and....

It was enough to keep the Germans at a distance...

OK... if there was any doubt about the result.

Becker must spend the night regrouping - I think 5 turns in this case.

6am 20 September

Arnhem Heights

The Germans come in hard and fast intent on breaking through and retaking Arnhem Bridge.

Morale is high and they come all kitted out.

But all this is with the advantage of hindsight.

The Brits set up the standard ring of death at the eastern entry and a stopping force to the West.

4th para have set up a little short handed as a few have stopped off the saviour the delights of Arnhem Town.

While the Germans have come with plentiful MG's and Flamethrower teams.

They take a fearful toll...

The 4 para pull back after suffering a bloodied nose from the schwerpunkt

Heteren

The Irish Guards skew off to the west.

Unable to fill out their BG the Guards are a little wary..

A hanfull af Ht's and AC's ambush them as they leave the town.

Unfortunately the VL aquisitin teams couldn't move fats enough before German morale broke.

Westerwort

The Germans have relocated the Stugs from Velp to Westerwort - attcking onto the map.

We had to restart this battle a couple of times as we couldn't work out what was happening.

The Germans could not deploy south of the river... which they held in it entirety before the move. (Brits controlled some bridge VL's)

We think if the Stugs had moved instead of attacked they would have been supporting the existing BG... the existing BG then being able to depoloy south of the river.

The single PIAT managed to take out a Stuh.42 from behind ... the Vickers and infantry teams dod the rest.

Air support missed their target.

But this BG is gone for good...
