I put the file there, confirmed I have Verdana, georgia and Arial on my system, but the tooltip boxes and game preference screen boxes are still empty.

I'd need to see a screen shot of what your seeing and see the config file to help trouble shoot your issue.

What you could do is use one of the 'radical' fonts form that big config file I created upstream and use that font for a test, you'll have to download it and install it.

Trial and error is how I got what you see in those screen shots up there.

This website has some great fonts. Will post some screenies of some combinations as I play around with them.

Well, I played around for an entire day with about 100 fonts, 84 of them downloaded and installed from the internet. I just couldn't get the right combination of Germanic looking fonts that didn't create graphical overlaps or become totally unreadable in the smaller font sizes.

I ended up going with a combination of the Franklin Gothic Demi, Franklin Gothic Medium, and Franklin Gothic Book. They give a good combination of readability/functionality with a tiny bit of gothic flair in the right places. Screenshot captures just about all of the fonts in action.

Here is the WiteFontConfig file I went with.

//Wite Font Config File
//*********************************
//Font id,Name,Size,0-normal/1-bold
//*********************************
//
//Default Fonts
//
//1,Arial,14,0
//2,Arial,10,0
//3,Arial,18,0
//4,Verdana,7,0
//5,Verdana,8,1
//6,Verdana,7,0
//7,Georgia,18,0
//8,Verdana,7,1
//9,Verdana,9,0
//
//
//1 - is big font widely used in headers
//2 - the most used font
//3 - rarely used big font (ex. end game screen)
//4 - rarely used small font (ex. top menu date/turn, etc)
//5 - used on unit counters on highest zoom and as small bold header
//6 - small font used in Commander's report
//7 - rarely used large font (ex. weather report)
//8 - small bold font used on unit counters on medium zoom. also used in Commander's Report
//9 - widely used in editor
//
//
1,Franklin Gothic Demi,14,0
2,Franklin Gothic Medium,10,0
3,Franklin Gothic Demi,18,0
4,Franklin Gothic Medium,8,0
5,Franklin Gothic Book,10,1
6,Franklin Gothic Demi,8,0
7,Franklin Gothic Demi,18,0
8,Franklin Gothic Demi,9,0
9,Franklin Gothic Medium,10,0

I just don't see what the benefit is. Variable fonts - whats the point - I just want a workable simulation that I enjoy playing.

See what I mean?

Or to put it another way, how boring would Microsoft Word be if we all had to use one font, say Times New Roman? Customization, what looks good to me may not look good to you.

@apd1004 --  thanks a lot for this fonts configuration -- I think it looks terrific and will be using it from now on.

I'm playing at 1920x1080 resolution (18" laptop screen), and finding that 10pt. font for #2 (most used font) is too big.  I switched to 8, using a slight variation of your scheme:

1,Franklin Gothic Demi,14,0
2,Franklin Gothic Medium,8,0
3,Franklin Gothic Demi,18,0
4,Franklin Gothic Medium,8,0
5,Franklin Gothic Book,8,1
6,Franklin Gothic Demi,8,0
7,Franklin Gothic Demi,18,0
8,Franklin Gothic Book,7,0
9,Franklin Gothic Medium,10,0

anyway, just in case other laptop users find this useful.

BTW, *thank you* to the dev's for adding this font functionality to the game, plus the non-dpi scaling -- it was killing me having to change my dpi (logoff, logon etc. etc.) every time i wanted to play WitE.  This arrangement is much, much better.

EDIT: on reconsideration, I think the reason to go smaller on some fonts has to do with the fact that my dpi is set to 125% (Windows 7), rather than my screen res. so, my settings might only be helpful for those using a higher dpi like me.

Yep, I agree with the switch for #2 to 8 font from 10. I found a couple places where the length of the paragraph from top to bottom was too long because of the larger font. Specifically, the combat results window.

Use a smaller font for that usage (see top post).

I've looked at the top post. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be postnig a message here. I've copied and pasted all sorts of fonts out of this post, changed font #2 to 8 then 6 size and nothing changes.

Currently what I am using is this:

//Wite Font Config File
//*********************************
//Font id,Name,Size,0-normal/1-bold
//*********************************
//
//Default Fonts
//
//1,Arial,14,0
//2,Arial,10,0
//3,Arial,18,0
//4,Verdana,7,0
//5,Verdana,8,1
//6,Verdana,7,0
//7,Georgia,18,0
//8,Verdana,7,1
//9,Verdana,9,0
//
// Standard type fonts:
//
// Microsoft Sans Serif ** like it
1,Microsoft Sans Serif,14,0
2,Microsoft Sans Serif,10,0
3,Microsoft Sans Serif,18,0
4,Microsoft Sans Serif,8,0
5,Microsoft Sans Serif,10,1
6,Microsoft Sans Serif,7,0
7,Microsoft Sans Serif,18,0
8,Microsoft Sans Serif,7,1
9,Microsoft Sans Serif,9,0

I have no issues, some of the fonts I tried above are horrid looking, you have to tweak the settings till you get a mix you feel you like.

Something else is going on then. I've copied and pasted your post into the WiteFontConfig.txt file, saved it, restarted the game, and nothing changes. I still get the overwriting

This is strange. Just tested with retail 1.01 and it worked just fine. Can you make sure that file has the original name and placed in dat folder? You may attach config file to the post, so I could check it.

Just in case, after pasting Don's config you need to decrease size of some fonts especially #2.

Turns out it was a PEBKAC error. I was changing the numbers on the lines beginning with // vice changing the numbers at the bottom. Upon changing the numbers in the correct area of the file it works like a champ.

Thanks to you both.

I noticed that when I installed WitE v1.02 Beta 1, that my WiteFontConfig file from above was replaced by the default one. Good thing I put the contents of my modified one here in this thread....

The patch is comprehensive it contains all the files missing or changed since 1.00. It is always good t make DAT folder backup if you did any modding.

I love the Russian font!! However, as I am now living in Ukraine and having a devil of a time learning both Ukrainian and Russian as well as reading both, I can not use this font because it will really really really really screw with my 58 year old mind. But none the less it is pretty dang cool :-)
