Its sce16 and for few months now ive tried to create atleast somkind of aircover over Lae to stop US from simply walking over the whole new guinea. Ive mustered all fighter groups and brought even carrier caps in the aid but still im loosing and seems like Lae airfield (and whole jap new guinea) is doomed.

I have good hold of guadalcanal and the rest of the solomons but if i loose new guinea...**** will hit the fan.

Here are some things I've tried with this prob of the japs with little to moderate success.

1. Leave Lae empty of aircraft if P.M is full of bombers. Once they're grounded, they're stuck there - and the air unit is destroyed by attrition and you can't transfer them out. Also, your base forces are quite rare - you'd be better off putting them seome less bombable.

2. You don't need to flatten P.M, but starve it. a couple of zeros out of rabaul on cap, all of your subs (mine laying or hunting) and some bombardment or CV tfs nosing around can usually catch the odd resupply convoy from brisbane and spank it.

3. Feints by sub insertion. You'd be surprised how ape a pbem opponent goes when you sub insert a tiny force of 20 2nd line troops and 30 infantry from your 2 sub transport tf and they take the beach next to P.M. Troops, even that small in size that take Buna, GG, and then perhaps march on P.M. PBEM opponents will freak about reconning them first. Then they won't believe the size of the forces and recon again, and then they'll start bombing them to shreds - which suits you find. 30 bombers bombing 100 men causes less casualties than 30 bombers bombing 10000 men (at least the way it is modelled in the game). You zip your troops in, "storm" that empty beach, re embark them and spirit them on their way, right under the allied airpower's nose! :D

Luskan,
I love your humble suggestions. I haven't played PBEM yet, but I sure got a good laugh about this particular tactic. I'll have to remember this if we ever play, and even if we don't. Would have liked to be a fly on the wall when your opponent saw you do this.:D I think I've seen the AI try this as the USN at Truk when I played scenario 17. The sub arrived at Truk on the same turn I was loading transpotrs with troops and I got this extraneous little US unit loading up in my extra transport that was supposed ro be loading up supplies but when I clicked on the transport to look at it the unit thankfully disappeared. But no little unit appeared on the map so it might have been a case of that teleporting problem.

Zakhal,

I'm not sure of your exact situation but you might try the following.

Gather up all available long range level bombers and begin hitting the airbases at night that he is launching his attacks from. If they contain a large amount of his level bombers, you will hurt him without having to run the gauntlet of day CAP. You will also start chewing up his supply that he needs to maintain his air offensive.

Pack as much of your AA units into Lae (the Japs have plenty). This will make low level bombing expensive for your opponent and does help to hurt even higher altitude attacks.

Re Luskan's point 3 : ignore this as it is silly, not in the spirit of the game and obviously something that an AI girlie like Luskan would think is funny.:p

I like bouncing a Nell or Betty group between Lea and Madang, using it to attack supply convoys going to PM. Drives people nuts and splits their forces.;)

As for winning air superiority as IJ, well, I don't think you can after July 1942. I don't care how many CVs are docked in Rabaul and escort a few bombers over PM, the IJN planes are just too dainty and allied planes and pilots just too numerous.

Don't worry NZTrooper, I've got lots of brilliant strategies posted around these boards that were put there especially for you!

Drongo: I did qualify my tactics by saying little to moderate success.

I have admit I've already done it twice against Raverdave in the current PBEM, including once where I turned up on the same beach as one of his major landings. It was a short and sharp defeat but I did find out he was there.

If you want long-term air superiority you need to take Port Moresby early. It is preferable to take it by the historically scheduled date of May 15th, but if you can take it before the 30th you will probably still do OK. If you fail to take it by the 30th then it means you probably lost the CV battle. You should have one final chance to take it sometime around July, depending on when you other CVs are freed up.

Once you own Port Moresby and Lunga you force your opponent to come to you. Now you have him flying ranges where his bombers won’t have fighter support. Winning air superiority is much easier in that situation.

I’ve also found that having numbers advantage early on will help. Finally, never ever use your CV air groups to attack ground targets unless you are invading. It just isn’t worth losing even 1 pilot unless you are sinking a ship or shooting down three enemy planes. Never attack ground units; that’s what your land based air is for.
