You may want to consider ordering up some fort units; it's desperate to do but helps digging.

You may want to try a modified checkerboard, with rifle units in trees instead of being plopped every two hexes.

Try not to put the partial strength units too close to the front; they need time to fill out and be ready.

All good points,i finally decided to fortify at various points. I'll try and use terrain better...but that checkerboard might be my salvation.

I needed the divisions in the far north down by Leningrad,so operation "Let the Finn's have some land" went into effect. This is the end of my movement on turn 8.

Here we are August and the panzers are approaching Leningrad,I'm going to use terrain and try to delay/bleed him for a month.

A real mess but I rebuilt the line and have more divisions coming up. If I don't lose too big this next turn I might turn a corner and generate more divisions on this front.

Again, nothing too pretty to look at but a coherent line is forming and there are reserves coming up.

Since Gomel is in German hands i probably shouldn't name this the Gomel front anymore. As soon as i clean and sort my Frontal Hq's out and assign them armies I'll name the screenshots after the predominant front command.

Kiev........hmmmn,is this going to cost the Germans some losses in serious city fighting? At the moment probably not. I believe he intends to cross the river and flank, then bypass Kiev.

Preparing for the onslaught that will come soon. If I can hold until mud,I might keep much of the area until next spring.

German losses continue to mount, then again mine dwarf his by far. Still over 1,100 panzers are lost/deadlined and over 200,000 men are losses.

Here is an example of my thinking. Basically a battalion of German infantry is lost just gaining the approach to the approaches of Leningrad. Less infantry able to fight in the city.

He has not done the damage to you numbers wise that he needs to do, so you should be able to slow him alot in the next few turns. Watch out for any large groups of panzers though, if he really wants to break thru that's what he will do. It is what almost happened to me on turn 9. Seems people comment more on your AAR, I must be boring

Keep fighting the good fight sir, your doing well.

Could be resting for a turn or two.....or on the rails and will be attacking you in some location far off.

At the start of turn 9 in the NORTH I am back peddling as fast as possible to Finn no attack line. I need those divisions to fight for Leningrad. On turn 10 I get some 20 more combat formations, some might have to go to Leningrad to keep supply access open.

Moving fresh divisions into the line and routed boys back to stack with Army Hq's. if I can keep him away from Leningrad until September I think I can hold it.

The rough terrain hexes are your defensive friends, especially for rifle units.

Here we have the all too familiar Cat-Box of Smolensk and Vyazma. Again I need to cobble together another line to hold for a turn.

Very true and I cherish every one I can get my boys dug in on. But it seems to me that the "SWAMP" for defense is the place to be!

Your not boring at all! And aside from yourself, randallw and my STAVKA Guru ComradeP few people comment regularly. Though many have chimed in here and there. Welcome one and all! I could certainly use some inspiring suggestions.....

Gomel area where he is pressing me. I really need to try and prevent a link-up between AGC and AGS

I'm worried about a break-through south of Kiev and a link-up with AGC and AGS! Can't keep all the divisions in the south diverted here.

Coastal Army situation.....The Crimea just had 2 more "depleted" divisions spawn there. With the 2 divisions already there that area might have to fend for itself.

Continuing to be a great read

Its a very useful AAR for a complete newbie like myself, as it gives you a real insight into what goes on, what to expect and that kind of thing.

Based on finishing one game of "Road to Leningrad" (Normal difficulty, Axis Minor Win (Yeah!), then Russian rifle units in swamps are very, very, very hard to shift

The loss situation for Germany looks very grim. I doubt an 8.7 : 1 loss ratio will do it for Germany in summer 41.

I think no way he gets Leningrad, and things in the south are going quite poorly for Germany.

The only danger area for USSR seems to be the Vyazma area. But I think it might be tough for Germany to continue to drive on Moscow without better progress to the north and south of that drive.

Nice job Tophat.
