Whats the "basic war story"?

i would sumbit "A Bridge Too Far" as a good example...basic as it gets, i think

latest SAP craziness update...whole week of workshops...our "leadership" has decided to declare one of our conference rooms the "SAP War Room"...my response has generally been, "I've been in a war, and this ain't even close...we're doing a disservice to all that have experienced a war...we need to call it something else."

I hear ya, KEM.

For me, the whole 'WAR' as a meaningful word was co-opted many moons ago. The "wars" on poverty, drugs, hate-speech, blah-de-blah de blah have dumbed down the language in the political arena so as to make it meaningless. "WAR", to me, should evoke base disgust, fear, loathing and horror. Kind of like "Rape". To co-opt these words for something so much less meaningful is to effectively render these words emotionless.

For those of you with an interest in "The Thin Red Line" (the novel and the movie) here is an interesting paper on the topic

http://christle.freeshell.org/essays/ttrl.pdf

For James Jones, the novel was his attempt at portraying the effect of combat on soldiers (he fought on Guadalcanal as a Marine), while Terrance Malick went in his own direction (perhaps "Paradise Lost" set in WWII). The author of this article agrees with comments in this thread that Malick did not intend it to be a "war movie".

Martin, how long is your obligation with your "current employer?"  Do you expect to extend and make it a career?

I'd like to extend, the paperwork is in but in all honesty I have no idea. Two years left at the moment, so I'm either in or I'm starting my resettlement courses before the year is out. I'm expecting the worst, civvy street is probably calling so I'll be starting to ask around a few places.

How many years total service will you have after the two years you have left? I did 10 years, and if it had been even 6 months longer, I would likely have stayed for my 20 to get a pension. Turns out I made a very good choice. The job marked in '97 was very hot and I already accepted a position with my current employer a full 5 months before my service was up.

I hope your options are as good 2 years from now, no matter which direction you take!

If I leave when my original time is up it'll be 9 years and then another 5 years reserve. Either the defence review is going to clear a lot of the 'dead wood' out of my way or it's going to shaft me big time. Some guys at my rank are getting signed on, others aren't. Hopefully I'll find out in February, if not then it could be a wait until the summer to learn my fate.

There are jobs out there, if people are willing to do the work or take a step down from what they believe they're worth or think they should be doing. Ideally I'll be after something technical, iirc several railway companies are quite keen on ex-techies.

I'm at Jan 12 playing as allies against Andy. I've captured all of Kyushu and got stuck trying to cross the the Big island. Trying to work out how to lever him out of the crossing hex.

I don't really see how Japan can keep the Allies out of Kyushu. I wonder if the Allies should invade there, establish AF bases, then maybe " reinvade " In the Sendai area after desroying enough of the Japanese airforce from the new bases ?

My parents and sister had rave reviews. After reading The Economist review though, I have second thoughts.
