My favorite... a game I still play often (like once a month while a work *blush*).......

Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain

I really enjoy the ability to mod your race.  It makes every game different... although I usually play it the same way.  Still fun though.

Speaking of ASCENDANCY, is that the game where the troops, when they were dying, would scream out, "Oh, my eye", "Oh, my spleen", and "Oh, my clavicle"?  We still use those quotes while sitting around the gaming table :)

Do people really still play BOTF? Does it even work with Vista or Win7?

Of course we still playing.

Currently W7-64b, no problems, although basic BOTF could be sometimes a bit hairy stuff under Vista/W7. There are patches at AFC if you having problems with running BOTF with standard 1.02 version. And if you start tweaking trek.exe and botf.res with editor, game is even more interesting.

I stopped lurking just to post this.

You're talking about Deadlock. I -knew- someone else played that game! I loved it!

EDIT: And er, on topic: My favourite 4x is MoO2, followed by SotS. ;)

Played Deadlock and Deadlock II. Fun little games. Still have both if my daughter didn't nip the CDs. :)

Why SotS? I found the ship combat too micro intensive. If I want to play/see ship combat, I would rather play SINS.

SOTS is a revolutionary game in terms of tactical combat. Even Homeworld had no such intense battles and flexibility as SOTS have.

If was not really the tactical that was great on its own but it was the massive variation in weapons system and the unique effects that were more than just damage numbers that played out in combat.Plus all weapon fire was traced and could miss delfect etc.The game has massive depth that is not apparent until you play it a lot.

I could never get past the first few turns of SotS, no matter how many times I tried. I was seriously bored which is a shame, because it had so much potential for me (although TBS tends to do that to me). Roll on DW!

Right along here is where I tell all of you that World in Flames in the best game of all time. No matter what the genre. Which, by the way, Matrix is doing for computer play as well.

I couldn't agree more on this subject. I talking about SotS only as a thing of past. Seriously disappointing piece of software.

Of course it is, but WIF development is slow, and because of that we need some substitutes along the way. Can't wait for WIF... for at least 10 years. Only supremely patient people still waiting for WIF.

Bring it on!

I actually prefer the simple model with only damage numbers. Makes the game much more simple to play. I don't like to micromanage ship combat and design. I guess preferences differ.

I've been looking for a game that will bring my Grandkids to gaming. I've actually made a couple of card games for them but now it's time to introduce them to the real thing.

Looking at what this game has to offer I don't see where I need to look any further. I'll have to learn at least the basics of the game to teach them. One of the advantages, for me, is the game is vs the AI. That means they can all learn at their own pace and just compare "scores" on how they are doing.

When we have played games in the past it's all about beating Pappa's score.....so I'll have to learn enough to give them something to shoot at.

I played a few of the old space games. Mostly board games and mostly Star Trek so I'm not a completely new cadet when it comes to stepping on a starship. My skills will be very rusty though.

I look forward to all the things this game can do for both me as a gamer and me as a grandparent to become closer to the GK's.

Good Hunting.

MoO2 for me... though I was a huge fan of MoO1 the 2nd opus is more fun. MoO3, well, never was fun.
As a second I'd put BotF, I still play it with the mods/patchs.
Else I didn"t really hook on GC, the game system and background doesn't make me believe I'm a galactic leader. Space Empires ... quickly get boring !
I'd would have loved to love SotS, but everything is geared towards tac battles that end up in typical RTS mess, it killed my interest.
Lastly AC is not a 4X.

AC is 4x. You can ardue that this isnt space 4x becoze it happen on only one planet(but still it has aliens and hard sf settings) but AC is defenitly 4x.

As I stated before MoO I is the best. MoO 2 is great too. BotF is good game, but Star Trek settings dont apea to me on the other hand Star Wars Rebelion is one of my favaroite game(and it is good game). SE4 is also good game with plenty of mods but AI is weak. Very weak.

About new games. GC is for me not well done copy of MoO. I mean no tactical combat, you can customize your ships but this have rally dont have effect on gameplay, planet development is plain, resarch tree hase no deep. I dont feel this game there is no magic in GC2 for me. On the other hand idea with starbases is good and AI can make a fight. But this is no fun game. Not that good done and no fun.
SinS. Great disapiontet. It is plain RTS. No 4x. Static combat and something is lacking.
SotS. I have mixed viev on this game. It is fun but only with expansions. Ships are ugly and tac battles are crudy slow and not very fun. I like strategic part tho. Ship customization is good but you dont design ships only equiped ready components with weapon and stuff. Difrent races with difrent gameplay. Many weopons and stuff. I waste huge amount on time with this game. This is sort of one more turn syndrom. But SotS arent great. Good but not great. Still this games is better than anything from newer games but that only means that space genre is very weak today. I hope that DW change that.

See now, I have to take issue with that statement. While Rebellion's premise was definitely appealing, I found the UI to be absolutely painful to use -- it took like 10 clicks just to find anything!

With some games, you get the impression the interface designers didn't always have the customer's best interests at heart. With Rebellion, however, I've always felt like the UI designers actively hated the customers' guts.

Martok I think this is difrence in personal point of viev.
Although I dont have  any dificulty in interfance.
Propably becoze I have a long history of playing many C64 or Atari Xl games before. [joke]
Still gameplay I find ok and climat is a SW when you can drive Empire to victory.
What you want more?
More nations, characters, units and ships. Still game was good. And has real time tactical battles with voice acting.
That was cool.

Yes Star Wars Supremacy (as it was called in Europe), was very good game. Interface not great of course, by standards of today.

I never had an issue with the interface until newer games arrived (like BOTF). Then I started to move away from SWS. Because I was playing religiously BOTF I found difficult to force myself into moving back to SWS.

Biggest problem of SWS was AI. Predictable like hell. And not many major space battles like in new Star Wars:EAW/FOC. Right now playing SW:EAW/FOC with Phoenix Rising mod. It is still long way from being finished product, and you need supercomputer to run it smoothly, but game play is simply magnificent (100+ star systems), and space battles are GLORIOUS encounters (no hard-points to target and finishing capital ships is not an easy task).

I beg to differ but AC isn't Sci Fi 4X, it's Civ on another planet ... Granted it shares some gameplay similarities to 4X but the setting is different.

As per SW Rebellion it isn't 4x neither, the world is fully explored at start, it's a "space empire wargame/RPG", like a Koei game in SW universe.

Ah, the classic "you go to desert island and magically can do something there" situation.

This is kinda hard for me. I've missed many uber classics mentioned here, like Alpha centauri, Ascendancy etc.
I've got both MoO1 and MoO2 from GOG. Sadly, I Haven't had time to play them extensively so I don't have such nostalgia factor for them. Have to fix that when possible. I've also played SOTS and SOASE and love both of them. Still DW is my most played 4X game ever so it's kinda my choice.
Darn, I hate "pick just one" situations.
Maybe if I could smuggle all my games on memory stick...
