Well, they started rolling blackouts across the state, supposedly 15 minutes at a time. Except they forgot to turn ours on, and i couldn't get through to the power company for ~4 hours... it got pretty chilly in here. The power is finally on (very shortly after reaching the power company).

Would have been nice of them to remember a bit sooner. Was wondering why the power went off earlier this morning. Now I know.

How long was your power off?

Also was annoyed that the "handyman" thinks he not only knows better than us. (already established) but now this includes the local Fire Dept.

I admit to being confused by both Handy and Fire on this. Neither of you was at home - so how could the stove or the fireplace be throwing off CO? The pilot lights (if they have them) are pretty small. And you smelled it. You don't smell CO. You do smell gas (natural or propane) because they add a really stinky trace gas to it to make sure that you do smell a leak.

Got both of you beat. I don't own an Apple product, probably won't for the forseeable future. I do, however, own some of their stock for the last 1.5 years.

That's the smart money-banking on their cache and PR product spin cycle.

Only reason i have apple experience is GF unit was formally an art student and "Mac" was the only way to go for the Adobe suite of programs (which were written for OS-X and rather poorly converted to Windows) She has an IMac 24in and two Macbooks and yes....i get to troubleshoot all three. Took me a while to figure out that my wireless router was the Mac hater and had to download a firmware upgrade so that GFU would stop screaming at her slow internet connection and threaten to frisbee the things.

oh well....it's a resume item.....some companies want Mac experience now. Steve jobs, having anticipated this demand offers an "Apple certified technician" program......ONLY $300.00 to purchase and it expires yearly i think.

I feel like one of the few people on the planet who DOESN'T own a smart phone. I have this odd believe that phones are meant to make phone calls not download useless apps that turn your voice into kitty speak.

Still....i'll admit to smiling hugely when i found the Trojan on GF's macbook. "Oh but Mac's are IMMUNE to viruses!"
GF still doesn't quite believe me when i tell her that since switching to Intel architecture...."Mac's" are in effect, "PC's" only with a different O/S. My only beef with them is that they are overpriced for what you get yet everyone thinks Bill gates is evil while Steve Jobs is the king of Cool. He must be a genius to have pulled that one off.

Well, the only product from the fruit company I have is my phone, and I have (knock on wood) had none of the problems that were trumpeted so loudly at the beginning.

I've dropped it on the floor five times so far, and it's developed no malfunctions, the glass hasn't been scratched, the battery hasn't exploded...

Everyone knows that PCs are a symbol of oppression, the neo-facist-capitalist world government uses PCs. But Macs are what John Lennon and Ghandi would have used, they knew how to stick it to the man! Plus Bill Gates is ever so slightly ginger.

I own an I-Pod. It helps the gym be slightly less crappy, and I do love to watch Jeeves and Wooster whilst I'm running It's also helpful when I'm flying, just sit back and relax, with the music on and my ear defs over the top of the earphones all I can hear is music

Probably 15-20 mins. I took a shower during the interim tho and kinda lost track of time.

Not sure.......the fire chief suspected that either there is a case of severely ineffecient burning and/or bad wiring that started burning. He noted the stove was old and does not have the saftey shut off features for power failures and such. Agreed on CO being odorless.....so obviously there were other emissions present but they and the detector did detect the CO and per "THEM" it was coming from the stove while Dad the handyman thinks it was the fireplace. I'm not going to argue.....as long as i don't asphyxiate or explode.

Read about that in a work email. We use several server systems based in Austin for daily build activities. They are all currently shut down to prevent damage when a blackout hits.

Low self esteem? Need something to make you think you're not some techno-dweeb? There's an app for that.

Actually, there isn't

A few inches of snow - over ice, i think. i am about to brave it and find out. Our friends from 2 blocks over got to our house before they ran into trouble, but they have 2 WD.

Three local power plants went down and can't be restarted for reasons which are "unknown". It is about 15 degrees F (~ -10degrees C) where i am.

Still pretty cold in here, and sometimes the keystrokes don't register... i think part of that is a software problem, though... it happens occasionally even when it is warm if i haven't rebooted for a while, but i just turned on my machine less than an hour ago.

Pipes froze here again last night. Temp kept going down until a while after sunrise, bottoming at 10F. Now it's 18F.

Maybe those keystrokes not registering are because your hands are cold. Or could it be the bulky gloves you're wearing?

Honestly i don't see any real difference between Win7 and OS-X. Both have their quirks. For OS-X, my favorite is the Pinwheel of death....or as i've begun calling it...."The girl with Kalidoscope eyes"

And to hear Apple Fanbois talk, it has no problems whatSOever... I'm so confused now...

He claims a lot more problems than I've ever had. Seems like the difference there might be the user......

Well .. I don't think Bill is all that evil, I mean not like Prince of Darkness kinda evil. He's more like Leguizamo kinda evil.

Perhaps I've gone too far. Bill has been reduced to an honorary pod.

Enron commercials used to ask . . . 'ask why?' . . . . their corporate officers got to ask 'how much?'. Pretty sure they get honorary pods as well.

This guy gets FULL HONORS:

Lone Nepali Soldier Defends Potential Rape Victim Against 40 Men

quote:

A 35 year-old Gurkha soldier named Bishnu Shrestha was riding a train when he suddenly found himself in the middle of a massive robbery. 40 men armed with knives, swords and guns stormed the train and began robbing the passengers.

Bishnu kept his peace while the gang snatched cell phones, jewelry and cash from other riders. But then, the thugs grabbed the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him and forcefully stripped her naked. Before the bandits could rape the poor girl in front of her helpless parents, Bishnu decided he had enough.

Btw, was channel surfing and found 'Timbuktu', woof, what a hoot.

Always wondered what woulda happened if Victor Mature was 10 years younger when they picked his stage name; would he be Victor Juvenal?
