Well, they started rolling blackouts across the state, supposedly 15 minutes at a time. Except they forgot to turn ours on, and i couldn't get through to the power company for ~4 hours... it got pretty chilly in here. The power is finally on (very shortly after reaching the power company).

Rolling blackouts ???

I guess I'm about to give offense, but are you sure you aren't in a third world country?

We had them in LA too. I think both CA and TX have bigger economies than Sweden.

Sure they do. I still have never experienced that. I actually had to google it to see if it meant the same thing I thought it did.

A quick Google search unearthed this news item from a few years back...pretty substantial blackout...

Glad you got your GFU to watch the Pacific with you, Nik and actually pay attention a bit.

Ironically, she was more into it than i was. I found the series a bit too stereotypical in it's portrayal and the character development was non-existant through much of it in comparison to Band of Brothers.

Part 5 was the only episode that really kept my attention. It was interesting to see Slade's trek from naieve soldier, to ruthless killing machine back to human being again, and the battle scenes were intensive. I may have to read his book now. Normally i'm not much into foot soldier memiors....but the interest is growing. Maybe i'll even pick back up "In Deadly Combat" again. (have only gotten through the first 3 chapters in a year)

GFU and i finished watching "The Pacific" the other nite. GFU asked a question during one fight scene showing the classic Banzai charge. "Why the hell do they do that?"

After explaining very....VERY briefly some of the factors.....her reply...."That's stupid.......lets go charge some guns"

Somewhere i thought......Mike Scholl is smiling.

Kudos on getting her to watch it. My son watched all episodes, but I was not as successful in getting my wife and daughters to do so. They all eventually watched BoB , so it will just take some time

That is a "normal" powerout ... not a planned rolling blackout ...

ETA: also, at that time I used to live in the northern parts of Sweden which was completely unaffected by this one

I know from personal experience that your infrastructure is good. That's why I got so surprised about that rolling blackout.

It's a sad truth that we have a serious self-imposed problem with infrastructure. They money has been there over the years, but political decisions are made to spend it otherwise. In cases where private investment is the issue, there is a combination of things like 'Not in my neighborhood' and 'We think you don't need another power plant {then} Hey, why am I experiencing a blackout???'

The blackouts were because 3 power plants went down - (again, the reasons for this are not clear)... there was insufficient capacity to supply everyone, so - rolling blackouts.

They stopped them yesterday afternoon. Presumably the power plants are back up and running.

i've also experienced this is Washington DC around 2002 or 2003 when there was a cold spell. Rolling "blackouts" of gas supply as well as electricity. That was because they had blocked all power plant development and transmission tower construction, then the Potomac froze and they couldn't get coal barges to a critical power plant - as well as vastly increased demand for power when it got really cold.

There isn't the transmission tower problem here, but apparently there is a critical balance of power generation capacity (3 plants is enough to crash the system, i guess.)

I have no idea why those power plants went down, but I do know that when demand exceeds a certain point, the plants either shutdown or sustain massive damage (where parts can take months to acquire). That's why some power outages have turned into mega-blackouts (areas/plants not being disconnected in time).

One thing that's rather alarming is that in your area (are you saying Texas?) power consumption should be much higher in summer, and they had a shortage now? Holy cow.

So much for "good" infrastructure. I haven't got Per's personal experience, but overall, US infrastructure is supposedly poor to very poor.

I don't think I would rate it that way, and comparisons (if made seriously and not with an element of jest) to third world infrastructures are certainly inaccurate. The biggest problem is maintenance of things like roads and bridges. When it comes to things like the electricity grid, it's political opposition to expansion (power plants, and don't even think about trying to put in more power lines).

That is one of the strange truths about infrastructure efficiency. The more efficient, the more vulnerable. When it comes to public works, economy of scale is a good thing; I mean, it's frikkin cheaper so the politicians can give all those saved dollars directly to their voting blocks to protect their phony-balony jobs! Technically it's good too; one BIG plant can provide the power of several smaller ones with consequent reductions in emissions, fuel costs, yadda-yadda-yadda.

Okey, dokey, so mess with just one of them BIG things and you will have chaos from Tennessee to Nevada trying to pick up the slack. Go(d)sh I love efficiency. And I thank the Universal (Providence, Truth, God, Dollar) that the Federal Govt is "very concerned" about this. Damn, I feel really good now.
