Our ships are mostly named after places, dukes, royalty or just butch sounding names, eg Indefatigable, Warspite, Indominatable, former Admirals (Hood, Howe, etc) or flowers.

Or when you build too many submarines, anything beginning with the relevant letter

HMS Shakespeare, HMS Truant, HMS Trusty, HMS Sea Scout. Or HMS Teredo, named after a species of woodworm

Warspite1

Or irrelevent letter - we built too many U-class subs for the number of useful words beginning with U - so some were named with the letter V at the front!

Flexibility you see. A lesser navy would've either made up words or stopped building

Warspite1

May be we should have done that; then we wouldn't have ended up with: HMS Votary, HMS Vox, HMS Urtica, HMS Visigoth

Overall, the brits are awesome at naming things when it comes to the military. The ship names are great and all, but what about the regiment names? King's Own Scottish Borderers, Black watch, The Gordon Highlanders etc... That is pure coolness..especially when compared to "134th Regimental Combat Team" or whatever.

That alphabet stuff worked pretty well, and I guess ya'lls ships had that stiff upper lip thing going on, so they didn't mind too much; but somehow the HMS Inconsolable or HMS Incontinent don't seem to float the boat, know what I mean?

You are right there - The Black Watch - that name is simply the business No wonder Bony got his behind kicked at Waterloo. The name alone is frightening

Just a shame they've all been merged now....and we have no ships left Oh well, at least they still exist in wargames

Dunno about that. One of my very favorite WWII combatants was HMS Glowworm. Ridiculous name. Fantastic pluck and fighting spirit.

Yes, the U-class was a one off problem - we normally do not have that many ships in a class - or at least that many ships in a class with a rubbish letter of the alphabet

Mind you HMS Incontinent? Mmm has a certain ring about it no? If I was in the Kriegsmarine and came up against her it would certainly scare the C**P out of me

Scylla and Charybdis were mythical sea creatures that lived either side of the Straits of Messina(?). They are said to be from where a rock and a hard place comes from i.e. if sailors sailed to close to Scylla they were attacked by Charybdis and visa versa.

Galatea has three versions in mythology - one of which was a Sea Nymph that turned her murdered lovers blood into a river in sicily...nice and Arethusa was also a nymph.

No - well sort of. I am doing write-ups for all the WWII ships for World In Flames. These write-ups include background to each ship's name - Charybdis and Scylla are unforgetable (except I may have got the sea wrong), but quite by chance I was finalising HMS Penelope today so was reminded of Aurora, Arethusa and Galatea, having done their drafts ages ago.

BTW - my brother served on HMS Andromeda.

What is the story behind the name Bonne Home Richard anyway? It seems like a very peculiar name for a US CV.

One of the naming conventions for the War-II CVs was sailing era ships that won notable victories. Thus Wasp, Hornet, Enterprise, Ranger, Essex, Intrepid, Franklin, Hancock, Boxer, and Bon Homme Richard. Was originally Revolutionary and 1812 period, but Kearsarge got in there somehow (probably due to some stinking Yankee Senator from New England ).

Interesting. And a much better naming convention than the present one. Presidents...I mean wtf.

I don't mind naming them after long deceased presidents-USS Washington, USS Lincoln, USS Roosevelt, etc. I do not appreciate the unfortunate recent precedence of naming ships after very recent (and still living) US Presidents. If you've gotta be dead to be on a dollar bill denomination, the same should apply to ships.

I tend to agree with that. Politics

Yeah, well, silly politicians must have their say. I wish it were otherwise. I wish our Naval High Command were more sailors than bureaucrats, and remembered that orgasmic thrill the first time they stepped on the deck of "their" ship and made that pairing that was closer then they had with their wife. Back then they "knew". Oh, yes, they "knew". The ship was alive. The ship was as alive and as sentient as they were. She was wife, she was mother, she was lover, and she knew what her name was and what was expected of her.

I "know" that ships are people too, and I "know" that they have the same emotions and pride that men do. Having a "name" that has some history, and a cause for for emulation, will indeed get that extra knot, or that extra pound of reserve bouyancy out of the gal. Proud tradition gives both men and ships that extra ounce of internal fortitude that, if it doesn't result in victory, leads to honor and respect upon receipt by the deep.

Well said.

Wow, I've never seen it expressed like that but it certainly strikes a chord. In the 90's the MoD finally painted out the pennant numbers of those expended as targets as a mark of respect to those that had served on her. It certainly felt like an old friend passing when I found out Galatea (F18) had gone that way. Resolution is in her dotage in th Old Submarines' Home that is Rosyth dockyard.

Richard Branson used to sell wargames so maybe he does aleady... Or not. Watching Shane. Another dead bottle of Chianti in the recycling.

No - at least not in its original guise - hopefully someone can help my failing memory here. I think Virgin sold the shops (I'm not talking about the big megastore music shops) to someone and I cannot recall who. I last went there back in 1995/6 but I'm sure it was not called Virgin then.

But it was a specialist wargaming shop still selling all the usual names AH, GDW, GRD, AGD etc even after it lost the Virgin name. Loved that shop! Bet its closed now.....can anyone help?
